When Showtime renegotiated its deal with Netflix earlier this year, the network made its current original series unavailable to the online streaming service. “With all the options out there, we want to be sure people know they have to subscribe to see Dexter or The Borgias,” Showtime CEO Matt Blank said at the time. Well, there will be a Borgias series available on Netflix soon. The company has acquired North American rights to a rival, European-produced series about the medieval Italian dynasty. Titled Borgia, the $30 million drama, which already airs in European markets, hails from Homicide and Oz alum Tom Fontana, with John Doman starring and Atlantique Prods, EOS Entertainment, Canal Plus and Etic Film producing in association with ZDF and ORF. The Showtime Borgias series, from DreamWorks TV, was created by Neil Jordan and stars Jeremy Irons. Netflix is currently in pre-production on its first original series, the David Fincher/Kevin Spacey drama House of Cards, produced by MRC.

“Netflix Gets Borgia Drama Series After All” – except it’s not Showtime’s The Borgias.
its actually better
I agree. I think it is much better. However, I did have a hard time getting passed Dormon’s lack of accent. But I was happy with the overall cast. Beautifully done.
I agree, Dorman’s lack of an accent has taken me a while to get beyond. And his acting ability is no Jeremy Irons. However, the rest of the cast more than supplements, and the Euro version is just as gritty and erotic as anything Showtime has done. Makes me smile to think how that must irritate the execs at Showtime…
loved this drama. the costumes, the actors playing their parts was so well done. I didn’t know that there was a different version. this one was definitely worth the watch: we did an Xmas holiday marathon watch of all 12 episodes!
So, this is why NetFlix is raising their rates?
Sounds great. Tom Fontana…John Dorman…Christian McKay…
AAAAAAAAND they’re gonna split Netflix in two for this? Say-what?! Oh-yeah, forgot, there’s that $30mil per cartoon from Dreamworks to pay for… BLOCKBUSTER I’M-A-COMIN’-HOME!!!
Thank you Netflix. Beautiful drama. I loved it and I hope Netflix will give us the second season as well.
yes second season )))))
I just finished watching “Borgia” on Netflix and it was good enough for me to hope for a second season. It was much more understated than the Showtime series with less scenery chewing. Neither is all that true to history but we have the History Channel for…why bother to delude myself. The History Channel and H2 are shite now.
I neeeeeed a second season.
I’ve watched the Netflix Borgia and absolutely LOVE IT!!!! Please give us a second season. Good work.
PLEASE HAVE SEASON 2 LOVE LOVE LOVE IT
Great series. Tom Fontana is brilliant and vicious in Borgia. Borgia has European nudity, violence, reminding me about Tudors series. I watched first episode for “BorgiaS” to compare and I could not stay focused and interested. For example, a lot happens before Rodrigo Borgia becomes a pope. In Showtime series, Rodrigo becomes a Pope in first episode. If you go with Showtime series you will not see “cardinal fight”, voting scene and dying Pope trying to be kept alive by Rodrigo with fresh mother’s milk. Wow.. I highly recommend Borgia.
This is a great series. Yes, all the people with different accents takes some getting used to; but this show really grew on me, including John Doman as Rodrigo. The one I found most annoying was Giulia, but Isolde Dychauk’s Lucrezia more than made up for it. Yes, Jeremy Irons is so great as Rodrigo in the Showtime version; and that show is also very very great! But since they both play fast and loose with history, I just enjoy them each for their differences.
More please!
Wonderfully done. The word about this series needs to be spread. I must see a second season.
All the different accents at first confused and annoyed me. This is a European production which means it will be probably be dubbed into many different languages. A common language was likely needed to actually film the series and everyone seems to speak English more or less so that was probably chosen as the common language. All this explains why in one family you have a father (Doman) speaking English with an American accent, one son with a Spanish accent, another with an English accent, and a daughter with a ? slavic accent. The pope’s mistress has an Italian accent and the mother of his children a Spanish Castillian accent. Even the announcer at the beginning of each episode speaks English with a slavic accent. Doman’s few Italian phrases are spoken with no attempt to replicate an Italian accent. Once you can suspend belief and deal with that one flaw, the series was fantastic. I also am hoping for a second season.
I agree with everything the other commenters are saying. The funny thing is I had actually purchased showtimes version but then returned it to Target after seeing Netflix had it. (Not realizing they were different) I am so glad I though because I LOVE the euro version. I need more!
I love the euro version, they really let you connect with each characters own story and it flows with such ease. Showtimes unfortunately doesn’t compare to the euro version, very impersonal and the characters aren’t as well developed, therefor leaving the viewer unconnected. please Netflix air season two of the
euro version, I’m going through withdrawls! lol
I agree John Doman’s accent took about one episode to get over, but then I really appreciated understanding correct English;)
Euro version is so much better than showtime. can’t wait for 2nd season. anytime soon?
When do think Netflix will have the second season. I am hoping real soon . I love it just as much as I did Tudors and I do know that this Borgia is not the showtime series witch i am watching now but there not the same
so cant wait
PLEASE RELEASE SEASON TWO OF THE BORGAIS SOON ALREADY RENTED THE WHOLE SEASON 1…THANKS !
Toally agree with all that have said euro version is better I reall hope Netflix give us the second season of the euro version otherwise I’m going to be very sad!!!
I love the borgias 1st season i saw on netflix not the showtime version im dying to know if and when the second season will debut???
Love the BORGIAS series – though the nudity scenes are not needed to convey the nature of the period. We saw THE TUDORS as well. Stunning … what television was meant to be … educational, riveting, and provocative enough to pick up some books to read up on what took place during this truly pivotal period in Western history.
I respectfully disagree with you about the nudity. Nudity was much more prevalent then than it is today and sexuality was used frequently.
I have not watched show times the borgias
Netflix did a great job give us season two
I have watched both series and I have to say, I actually like the one on Netflix just a bit more. Bothe are very well done and there are a few actors I’d like to switch around but I like both. The only thing I don’t like is that they are far too similar in story-line. Yes, there are a few differences but to me it felt like they made it just slightly different so no one could say…you copied us, but I’d swear all the did was tweak showtimes script
I think it’s great that this series is having a second season and I hope it goes further then that. It should be advertised better in the states. Most people only know of the showtime version. In my opinion this version is superior in many ways. I’m glad it’s coming to Netflix.
please give us season 2 ‘m hooked.
