Hey Morgan!, the Matt Shakman-directed musical that opens at the Black Dahlia Theatre in Los Angeles on October 15, has released a sample song (audio below) that conveys a real insider’s take on the Hollywood agency game. The song, “(I Gave My Heart To) CAA”, is a catchy tune from the show that captures the frustration of a young woman’s attempt to rise to the rank of agent. Written by Matt Fogel and Isaac Laskin, the song drips with sarcasm. But how can you not like a tune that works the names of Nikki Finke and Bryan Lourd into its lyrics? But call a fact checker – because the heroine sings of wanting to be an agent at CAA so she could rep Michael Bay. Of course, Bay is repped by WME, but that doesn’t rhyme.

I wanted to like it, but this song is just terrible.
She says she wants to rep “the likes of Michael Bay” meaning that she wants to rep someone on his level or similar. Which is pretty accurate because CAA does rep talent that are “the likes of Michael Bay”.
I really wanted to like this. Huge musical theater fan in a town that doesn’t usually care about it, working in an industry that’s never really been portrayed properly on the musical stage.
But damn, this is just bad. Are actual rhymes too much to ask for? Or meter? Is it too musical-wonky of me to even worry about that kind of thing?
Guess I’ll just have to wait for the inevitable Swimming With Sharks musical to hit the great white way.
Holy shit @ Swimming With Sharks reference. Brilliant.
They lost me at the first “rhyme”: Ivy/”on me”. Had to stop it right there…
oh my god people….if this didn’t make you laugh, or at least grin like an idiot for a second, you’re completely dead inside. Or not in the business.
if you want perfection – read a resumé.
Well, then I am dead inside. sigh.
This sure isn’t gonna be my CPR.
Listen to 2-3 numbers from “The Producers,” Maybe just “We Can Do it,” “Unhappy” and/or “I Wanna Be a Producer” and then come back and try this on. Maybe “City of Angels.”
This? This is…well, not those.
you know what, i was totally wrong, i just listened to the whole thing and it’s actually pretty good. where can i get tickets?
This is a comedy, not a serious portrayal of the nature of the business. Part of the fun is the ridiculous songs with rhymes that are tightly forced into the meter for effect.
This is really bad. Wanted to love it. Terrible.
hilarious.
Wanted to smile today
I thought on-lines the way
the net’s the place to live
but it’s so negative
I gave my heart to commenters
they tore it out.
bay made the bumblebee…
so i wannabe in WME…
facts – check; rhyme – check
To Jason:
Meter – No, nice try though
Seems like any business that puts the “Finke” into it will get some great pr… When is a burger joint going to name something the Nikki Finke? What would that be???hmmm yum
The chorus is going to be my new ringtone.
Hahaha! I love this. The end when he’s naming all the restaurants. lol
Catchy ditty, lots of fun! I liked it. Neg commenters, get real — maybe shift ur weight a little, loosen up that pole up the… cheers.
Funny! (Seriously, I’m about ready to stop reading the comments sections on Deadline. What a bunch of humorless haters lurking on this awesome site.)
Christ, how difficult is it to make this stuff rhyme, just for starters? Bush-league all the way.
This is just terrible, really horrible.
Worse than any of the stuff that comes out
of those unimaginative BMI programs.
So funny! This is for every personal assistant I’ve ever met!
WME actually reps all of the artists mentioned…
Very catchy tune. I’d love to see it!
The play is hilarious and heartfelt. And for the record Bay was in fact repped at CAA at the moment in time when the play takes place.
seen the play — heard all the tunes — it’s an awesome show and hysterical. anyone who grew up in or around this L.A. scene will love it, and if you didn’t, it is an awesome window into the insanity of it all.
Sounded fun.
Interested besides all the bile.
Only problem for me: not funny.
