Paramount Pictures has just moved the DreamWorks comedy starring Eddie Murphy off Martin Luther King weekend to a new date after the Academy Awards. Now A Thousand Words will open on March 23rd. A studio exec told me it’s to take advantage of the heat that Eddie is expected to generate for his career after hosting the Oscars.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

So now Eddie can get all his flops for the year out of the way in a single 3 week period.
The last funny movie Eddie Murphy was in was Bowfinger.
If they had thought to delay the release of Norbit Eddie Murphy would be an Academy Award Winning Academy Awards Host
100% agreed – Eddie really should have won the Oscar for Best Supporting Act for his James Early role in Dreamgirls – acting, singing, dancing, comedy – quadruple threat – yet, the grotesque, crass shadow of Norbit’s TV buy blitz negatively influenced Academy voters to snub him that year – a crying shame – remember he did win the Golden Globe, but of course the GGs don’t have much credibility/currency anyway.
Hasn’t this thing sat on the shelf for over a year? Doesn’t bode well for a would-be career resurgence film.
Quality of the film is not what this article is about – it’s about release strategy to maximize attendance, and Oscar heat will do it. What happens in week 2 is another story.
I think the Oscars are counting on Tower Heist making Eddie’s career hot again…
Eddie could EASILY be hot again
R rated action comedy.
Duh.
paging Quentin Tarrantino of Judd Apatow.
Clark, it’s been shelved for way over a year – it was filmed back in mid-2008. Word has it the test screenings were abysmal.
Good luck with all that – Eddie is toxic and everybody knows it.
I actually enjoyed Norbit for what it was, a black Dumb and Dumber. I don’t think the hosting gig will help Eddie but you never know. Stranger things have happened.
I wish Eddie Murphy would do movies for adults again like he used to and ceases doing children’s films. It would be sad and disappointing if he doesn’t.
Everyone is ready to give up on him. He has alienated his fanbase for years and has seemingly gone out of his way to make lousy children’s movies, with only the occasional film for adults once in a while.
The career resurgence film will be Tower Heist. No question there. . . I think this was moved because Eddie knows that A THOUSAND WORDS is a stinker and doesnt want a repeat at this Oscars to what happened to him in the Norbit year of the Oscars. Smart move for everyone involved.
Eddie’s career can be heated by the Oscars? That’s about as futile as trying to cook a frozen turkey with a cigerette lighter.
True. How is the Oscars going to make his career “hot” again, if he keeps making “crappy” movies? Even if he does a good job hosting, he still has to have a “hit” movie in order to be “hot”. Just like Jim Carrey – he’s like making really bad movies, and now he’s resorting to bizarre Youtube postings of himself to get attention. The only thing that can make them hot again is a “hit”, and they just have to stop being so lazy and start reading those scripts.
Yeah, good luck with that.
Eddie has terrible taste in picking projects – from Pluto Nash to Daddy Day Care to the Klumps. I know, get Eddie together with MArtin Lawrence so they can merge the characters Big Momma and Rasputia.
Hosting the Oscars does his career no good. And it remains to be seen if he can even pull this off without screwing up.
If Eddie wants his career to be hot again he needs to stop making crap like “Imagine That.” His problem is he works for the paycheck. If you do that, you have to try to pick good “paycheck” movies, not just anything that makes you bank (doesn’t hurt to throw in a good indie movie turn once and a while too). His problem is what he told Nick Nolte… He ran into Nolte and asked how he got all those good roles, that he wanted them too. Nolte told him that he wouldn’t make any money. Eddie said, sorry…I have a lifestyle to which I’m accustomed.
There is no nobility in poverty.
There is no nobility in wealth either.
I heard the same thing on the Nolte conversation. I am friends with a close friend of Eddie’s and I will say this. He does work for the money, no shame in that. But I will also say through his entire career he has remained a true friend to many. He is a wealthy man but he has been very generous to people many in his position would have dumped in a heartbeat. He keeps his word regardless of what it costs him and I would be honored to be in his employ. I hope with all my heart he is able to bring this awards show home and make it a hit for all. Wup that ass EM!
We all know what would make Eddie Murphy’s career hot again:
Make a decent movie (Tower Heist will make money, but no one expects it to be a good film do they?).
He doesn’t even have to be funny, necessarily.
Just stop making crap movies.
Signed,
People who haven’t enjoyed an Eddie Murphy movie since Coming to America.
Thanks.
Eddie hosting the Oscars isn’t about his movie career. Everyone wants to see if he is still a genius stand up comedian. It’s been around 25 years since he’s even taken the stage to perform.
I’m not saying he can’t pull it off. But it can be very difficult at fifty, to get people to accept what they loved about you when you were nineteen. Sometimes it just doesn’t come off as charming. We’ll see.
@co median – c’mon be fair Boomerang, the first Nutty Professor & Life were all good films (especially Life which I think is a very underrated film) and they all came after Coming to America
Hugh Jackman hosted The Oscars and now he has a fighting robot movie coming out. Imagine the cool Eddie Murphy movies will be putting out.
