In the arena as Spartacus, he was invincible. But in real life, former Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield has lost his battle with cancer. The Welsh-born actor, who was beloved by fans of Starz’s gladiator drama, passed away today in Sydney, Australia, where he had lived since 1999. “On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer,” Whitfield’s wife Vashti said in a statement. “He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.” Whitfield was 39.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.” Added Spartacus creator Steven DeKnight via Twitter, “No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother.”
Whitfield got his big break when he was cast as the title character on Spartacus: Blood and Sand. But during a routine checkup in March 2010 just before production on Season 2 was to begin, he was diagnosed with what was described at the time as treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Production was put on hold while Whitfield underwent treatment. He eventually went into remission and was days away from starting filming on Season 2 when his cancer came back and he had to resume aggressive treatment. Despite that, he remained positive, while the Spartacus role was eventually recast with Liam McIntyre.
In June 2010, when he had just been given a clean bill of health after his first round of cancer treatment and was actively training for his return to the show, Whitfield did an interview with Deadline in which he talked about his illness. “After the initial shock — I was a healthy young man and had no idea that this could happen — it was frustrating that the first season was ending on such a high note and we could’ve been rolling into Season 2.” But after that initial shock came “time to heal, figure things out and spend time with my family,” he said. The experience taught him some important lessons, he said, like: “Stay in the now and enjoy every moment.”

God Bless Him and his family, My Prayers go to his family…
wow…just wow….it puts my small struggles into perspective…and it makes me so grateful for each day above ground…i can only say that i hope the courage that has been the true testament to his life and to his family and friends rubs off on all of us and we are able to remember what is truly important in life.
peace be with you Andy.
You and your family will be in my prayers – Rest in Peace
Andy Whitfield showed more class in his last days than half of Hollywood in their heydays. He will be a warrior in Heaven.
I couldn’t have said it better than XYZ did. Andy really was a warrior in life…I wish he was still here. How hard that must have been to have achieved so much, only to have it taken away in such a bad way. I’m so sorry that he’s gone and sorry for his family. I don’t believe he’ll ever be forgotten…he was a great warrior.
I loved Andy Whitfield in Spartacus, he was fantastic. I only wanted Starz just to watch Spartacus. He will be missed by so many. My prayers are with his family. May he rest in peace. He was a great actor in his short time.
I only watched Spartacus the movie 2 months ago have been looking for Andy only to find this out…i’m in shock RIP brother…
Where on earth have I been??? I have only just watched the first series of Spartacus after a friend recommended it and was about to watch season 2 when I decided to read up on the cast so I have literally just found out that Andy Whitfield died. This wasn’t big news in England so forgive my ignorance please. Have to say I am shocked and totally devastated to find this out, someone so strong and full of life and the fact that he left two young children breaks my heart. Andy is what made the first series what is was, fantastic, and now I have a lump in my throat trying to watch the rest of it. Life is so cruel, unfair and doesn’t make sense. R.I.P. brother.
In terms of death toll, cancer lis like having a 9/11 every other day.
Cosign.
So true!
This is so sad. My husband and I had watched the series from the beginning and we loved it. We were so shocked and saddened to learn that he was ill and hoped that he would make a quick recovery so that he coils continue the series. So young with lots of promise. Cancer sucks!!
This is very upsetting. Very talented actor who should have gotten to do much more. Yet the Kardashians, Snooki and Lohan live to waste oxygen another day.
Here, here.
RIP.
Here. Here. RIP and please to the family; we are praying for you. BB
I don’t like the Kardashians, Snooki or Lohan but I would never wish death upon any of them. RIP Whitfield.
Oh come on, Kim K., Snooki, and Lohan are just trying to make a living. Forget them and don’t wish death on them.
RIP ANDY, you left us to soon.
Poetry. No truer words have been spoken. A loss like Andy Whitfield should give pause to anyone who doesn’t value those who put real thought & effort into what they do.
RIP.
As much as I am sadden about his death, and will miss him tremendously on Spartacus, wishing death for other people, however waste of oxygen they may be, doesn’t sit right with me.
RIP Andy Whitfield.
I didn’t “wish” death on anyone. I merely said it was a shame that vibrant, talented people who contribute to society have to die so young, while those who contribute NOTHING are still with us.
I don’t wish death on the Kardashians, Lohan or Snooki. I wish them a long life of obscurity and being 100% out of the public eye. Which do you think would be more punishing to them?
I agree with you Kieran–not wishing death just pointing out the obvious–there are fame whores and there are great actors. I fell in
love with Andy when I saw the movie Gabriel. If fans of Andy Whitfield haven’t seen this great artsy flick, get it now!
Way too young, way too talented, way too sad. Rest in peace good sir.
Agreed – extremely sad loss and will always be remembered for his brilliant talent.
RIP Andy Whitfield, heck – they say the good die young and he was.
Rest in peace, brother.
Unreal. This has made a horrible day even worse.
Rest peacefully, Andy. At least you will be remembered for your chance to shine in “Spartacus.”
R.I.P.
Sad that we didn’t get to see more of his work and know more of him.
Thoughts and prayers to his family.
Good night, sweet prince … we will cherish you always
This is such unbelievably sad and terrible news. I watched “Spartacus” initially without much excitement, but quickly became a fan, primarily because of Mr. Whitfield performance and star power. To my eye he was a real find with incredible movie star potential and an old fashioned virile screen presence. With all due respect I found Andy’s talent and charisma to be far superior to recently anointed “Movie Stars” and similar types Sam Worthington and Joel Edgerton. He was the real deal and I anticipated a great film career in his future, what a shame that among even more important things has been taken away. My heart goes out to his family, friends and co-workers. R.I.P. Andy Whitfield.
Rest in peace Warrior.
SO SO sad.
Horrible news… May he rest in peace…
So sad to hear this news. Rest in peace.
This is so sad, I just pray that God will bless and comfort the hearts of all his family and fans. May his soul Rest In Peace. Greatly loved and sadly missed
He was a great Spartacus. I didn’t want to see him leave the show. I am so sorry for his family now.
Very sad news. Cancer sucks
Promising career cut way too short. At least his memory will live on in the Blu-Rays and DVDs for Spartacus.
It truly is a beautiful day here in Sydney. A little bit less now, obviously.
This makes me so sad and so angry. We lose 1,500 people a day from cancer. 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This vibrant young man who had so much to offer is senselessly another victim of a war we have yet to win. But we can. We need the
national and international will to beat cancer. And we need more cancer research. Wake up world. Rest in peace Andy.
Well said… better hope we don’t socialize medicine.
God Bless his family. Wow this is so sad.
Earth just lost a great guy and great actor! My Prayers go to his family…
This is, indeed, a shame. Spartacus put him on the cusp of stardom, but he’d already established himself as someone to watch in a madly brilliant little dark fantasy film called ‘Gabriel.’ Shot for less than the cost of most houses, these days, it was an intense piece that had him playing the title role, an archangel who was trying to return light to purgatory and save the souls of those dwelt there.
I would urge every fan of Andy’s from Spartacus to find and watch this small gem of a movie.
Andy, you died way too soon. Rest in peace, brother.
well said Sheldon–I have an eye for future stars in early obscure roles and when I saw Gabriel I thought Andy Whitfield was destined for stardom. So sad. I feel so sorry for his family. Really, I seen lots of movies and Gabriel is one of my favorites.
My wife and I are so sad to get this news. To his family all our prayers in this sad moment. RIP.
Very saddened by his passing. May he rest in peace and I pray that his family heals through this difficult time.
This is a such an unfortunate loss, but please know that his memory will always be celebrated. He was a wonderful, talented, and inspirational young man. I also pray and hope that no one reading this post ever has to endure this pain, that everyone and their families are blessed with the health that we sometimes take for granted.
