In the arena as Spartacus, he was invincible. But in real life, former Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield has lost his battle with cancer. The Welsh-born actor, who was beloved by fans of Starz’s gladiator drama, passed away today in Sydney, Australia, where he had lived since 1999. “On a beautiful sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18-month battle with lymphoma cancer,” Whitfield’s wife Vashti said in a statement. “He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was.” Whitfield was 39.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht said in a statement. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans.” Added Spartacus creator Steven DeKnight via Twitter, “No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother.”
Whitfield got his big break when he was cast as the title character on Spartacus: Blood and Sand. But during a routine checkup in March 2010 just before production on Season 2 was to begin, he was diagnosed with what was described at the time as treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Production was put on hold while Whitfield underwent treatment. He eventually went into remission and was days away from starting filming on Season 2 when his cancer came back and he had to resume aggressive treatment. Despite that, he remained positive, while the Spartacus role was eventually recast with Liam McIntyre.
In June 2010, when he had just been given a clean bill of health after his first round of cancer treatment and was actively training for his return to the show, Whitfield did an interview with Deadline in which he talked about his illness. “After the initial shock — I was a healthy young man and had no idea that this could happen — it was frustrating that the first season was ending on such a high note and we could’ve been rolling into Season 2.” But after that initial shock came “time to heal, figure things out and spend time with my family,” he said. The experience taught him some important lessons, he said, like: “Stay in the now and enjoy every moment.”

He was so incredible in Spartacus – “for those about to die we salute you”. SALUTE!
Oh man. This is so sad. I thought his condition was improving. He was a great actor and judging from his interviews and casual interaction with others, a standup guy. RIP my friend.
This news is so upsetting. He was a fantastic Sparticus and a reason for tuning in every Friday night. It’s doubly sad when you consider that he had just a tiny nibble at the future he could have had.
I hope his friends and family can find some bit of consolation in the knowledge that this beautiful man was loved by many who didn’t even know him.
Oh man, this is so very sad. I thought his condition was improving! He was an extremely talented actor, and judging by his interviews and interaction with fans, a stand up gentleman. RIP my friend.
I am SO SO SO saddened by this news. I’ve been looking for updates on his condition for months but never expected this. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and I hope they know how many lives he touched through his many performances. Having played an angel, he is with them now. RIP Andy.
Hence the saying “Only The Good Die Young”. Rest In Peace… A True Gladiator. You Will Be Missed. My Thoughts And Prayers Go Out To The Family In Their Time Of Sorrow.
A true loss. He was a wonderful actor & talent.
This is the worst September 11th ever.
Hard to stomach such a lovely, strong, and sublimely talented young man could be taken so tragically while scum is left to litter the Earth’s surface. It just isn’t right. My sincere condolences to his family. RIP, Andy, and thanks.
This really saddens me so much. Terrible news. RIP Andy Whitfield.

May God watch over Him and Protect His Family.
People think we are Not grateful or humble in this business.
Lightning can strike anyone when it rains.
Those Blue Rays & DVD’s will Play for ever
and keep his memory alive.
RIP
Few people play a role so perfectly that being replaced would be impossible ( Heath ledger as the joker). Andy was truly a brilliant actor. You will be missed by friends, family and fans. “In another life, we could have been as brothers.”
This is so horrible, when I found out he was sick i just thought, oh he will make a full recovery I’m sure, he is a fit and healthy young man. Being someone who smoke every day, drinks often and eats shit, it’s hard to imagine someone like this passing… I hope that he went away happy and warm.
What a tragic end to a wonderful actor and talent. He was so good on Spartacus. Very sad news.
My thoughts go out to Andy’s friends and family who will miss him greatly.
Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of young actor.RIP
This guy was such a talent and such a pleasure to watch. So sad for him and his family — right when his career was taking off. Cancer is awful and often indiscriminate, not the type of thing that can be blamed, like drugs or other destructive behavior. Just a damn shame. I’m truly in tears at his loss. The news comes as a shock to me. I’ve been rooting for him since I found out. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.
With sadness in my heart, I remember the joy of your art which made my heart rise up and say, “I am Spartacus…”
So so sad:( cancer is a very deadly n silent illness. My heart goes out to his family. He was truly a hero. RIP Andy. U left us too son
So truly sad. So young. But his life had purpose. Thank you for showing us you talent and passion. God bless you and your family.
