Comedy writer Jeffrey Hodes has died suddenly from cancer treatment-related complications. He was in his 40s. Hodes had cancer but was in remission and was getting ready for a bone marrow transplant. He went in yesterday for a blood transfusion in preparation for the transplant when he started having breathing problems. An MRI revealed blood in his brain and, after a day in intensive care, he was taken off life support this afternoon. For his entire career, Hodes worked with Nastaran Dibai, who was his wife and writing partner. Hodes is survived by Dibai and their young daughter. Hodes and Dibai worked together on such comedy series as According to Jim, 3rd Rock From the Sun and The Nanny and the Kelly Ripa-starring Hope & Faith. Last year, Hodes and Dibai developed a comedy project for ABC with Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos. “Jeffrey Hodes was a brilliant comedy writer, an amazing showrunner and a wonderful husband and father,” Ripa said. “I considered myself one of the luckiest people alive to call him a true friend. I will miss him terribly.” The Ripa/Consuelos project was executive produced by Aaron Kaplan, who collaborated with Hodes and Dibai on several projects, including the ABC pilot Funny in Farsi, which the writing duo created. “He was an fantastic writer and an even better husband and father.” Kaplan said. “The world has lost a truly talented man.” TV producer Mindy Schultheis was also among Hodes’ close friends (Hodes and Dibai wrote for the Lifetime comedy Rita Rocks, which Schultheis produced). “I’m heartbroken,” Schultheis said. “I honestly don’t even have the words to express how much he will be missed. He had a passion for life, his family and his work that permeated all he did. He was not only an incredibly talented writer but he was a truly wonderful guy.” Up until Hodes’ death, he and Dibai were serving as co-executive producers on TV Land’s recently renewed series Happily Divorced, reuniting with The Nanny star/co-creator Fran Drescher. The two wrote the first-season finale of the comedy, their last produced episode.

Just seen this posted on Twitter from Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos. Didn’t know of him, but one doesn’t have to know someone in order to pay their respects. Someone’s son, grandson, brother, friend…. Rest In Peace Jeffrey Hodes.
So sad to hear of an incandescent talent such as Jeff Hodes leaving us too soon. May his family, friends and loved ones find a balm in knowledge that his comedic artistry left millions of smiles across the country, a nice and enduring legacy to have. RIP Jeff.
Jeffrey had a beautiful light in him and will be sorely missed.
I was lucky enough to know Jeffery and considered him more than a friend… he was family. To say we suffered a loss today is not enough. Everyday we will feel this loss. He was brilliant, amazingly funny, sweet and 100% real. He will live on through his amazing wife and daughter and will be missed dearly.
Jeffrey was a mensch.
You will have trouble finding as true and as honorable a man as Jeffrey Hodes not only in Hollywood, but in North America. I had the honor of working for him and his amazing wife and I can tell you that — with the exception of my parents — that there was no one I wanted to disappoint less than him.
I am truly devastated by the loss of such an incredible man. Jeffery was a man of honor with a passion for his work and his family. The love and friendship that existed between Jeffrey and Nastaran was palpable- their banter unlike any other. Jeffrey was a beautiful soul and will be greatly missed…
The “3rd Rock” staff truly felt like a family, and we are devastated to have lost two members in the past year. I worked with Jeffrey and Nastaran for only a brief time, but he was a smart, solid guy, enthusiastic, funny, and kind. This is terrible, tragic news.
I’m devastated by the loss of my friend and one of the truly good guys in this business. For 20 years, I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of hanging out, knocking back beers and laughing my head off with Jeffrey and I’ve cherished every minute of it. He was an amazing man, an phenomenal husband and father and a truly special human being. The world’s a lesser place without him and I’ll miss him more than I can even articulate. Rest well, my friend.
What an incredible man. I’m honored to have known him and loved him. He made every time together important. I will always miss hime … and being thanked for my hard work this season.
What a terrible loss. I was on 3rd Rock with Jeffrey and Nastran and then was lucky enough to reunite with them only last year. Jeffrey was a true force. He will be missed.
My heart goes out to Nastran and their daughter.
Jeffrey was supportive, kind, self-deprecating, and funny — the best kind of writer to be in the trenches with. I’ll miss you, Hodes.
That is very sad. He was going in for treatment and dies. May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
What a shock and a loss. Jeffrey was such a lovely man and a class act. Will be missed by all lucky enough to have known him.
Jeffrey was assistant on Equal Justice so many years ago and we all knew he was going to go far as a writer. He was already too funny for our show.
He was also a really warm decent guy.
This is just awful to hear. There is no spin for this.
A beacon, a light, a fighter til the end. You fought a good fight Jeffrey. Now may you find peace at last. Good night my friend.
RIP. You’re a good man, Jeff.
A singular voice, a wonderful friend, father, husband. All have been extinguished in one deeply talented and beloved man. He leaves a gaping hole that used to be filled with love, friendship, talent, loyalty, sensitivity, insight and courage in the face of such difficult illness. We were all so much richer to have known Jeffrey, and are now poverty stricken at his loss…

Jeffrey Hodes was the showrunner on the first TV show I ever worked on, and he was an incredibly kind, talented man. I am very saddened to hear of his passing.
I worked with Jefferey and knew him as a talented writer and a genuinely nice man in a Not-always-nice business. My regret now is that I didn’t get to know him better. I am so very sad for his family.
I had the chance to work with Jeffrey on a few shows. The world truly lost an amazingly talented writer and one hell of a nice guy. RIP Jeffrey.
I was in the P.A. trenches with Jeff all those years ago, and remember him as nothing but warm and funny. Glad to see from these comments that those qualities never changed with time and success. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
There must have been a need for an angel somewhere.
I am truly saddened. It is a rare occasion in this business when you meet and work with
a person of impeccable character. Such a man was Jeff.
Jeffrey was ALWAYS fun to be around.
He was a talented writer, an amazing honest husband and father…and a great boss.
I spent some of the best days of my life with Jeffrey on Hope and Faith.
I will miss him in so many ways.
RIP Jeffrey…finally
