ANALYSIS: Behind ‘New Girl’s Surprisingly Big Opening And The iTunes Experiment
We may have the first breakout hit of the season. Fox’s quirky new comedy New Girl far exceeded ratings expectations with a huge debut, drawing a 4.7 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 to rank as the top program of the night by a wide margin. (UPDATE 9:15 AM: In the time-zone-adjusted Nielsen numbers just released by Fox, New Girl‘s premiere climbed to a 4.8/12.) In total viewers, the comedy starring Zooey Deschanel averaged 10.1 million viewers. Compared with the series premiere of Raising Hope in the same slot last fall, New Girl was up 52%. It posted Fox’s highest-rated live-action fall comedy debut in a decade, since Bernie Mac (5.7/14) in 2001. It even eclipsed the premiere of TV’s highest-rated comedy at the moment, ABC’s Modern Family, which opened with a 4.3 demo rating in 2009. It also paced Fox (3.9/10, 8.7 million) to a nightly win in the 18-49 demo. That is a nice validation for Fox’s marketing team, whose controversial decision to make the show’s pilot available on iTunes and VOD before the premiere raised concerns that the exposure might hurt ratings for the opener. (Unofficial estimates peg the number of streams at about 2 million.) New Girl also shot up from its lead-in, Glee (3.8/11, 8.9 million), whose third-season premiere was down sharply from the big Season 2 opener, by 31%. (All comparisons in this story are fast nationals to fast nationals. UPDATE 9:15 AM: In the time-adjusted numbers, the Glee premiere rose to a 4.0/11.) Following New Girl, the second season of Raising Hope (3.1/8, 6.9 million) was even in the demo with its premiere last fall when it followed Glee.
CBS’ lineup was rock solid, especially veteran NCIS (4.2/12, 19.5 million), which shows no signs of slowing down as it enters its ninth season. Last night’s premiere was actually up 8% from last season’s opener, which was impacted by the big Glee premiere and ranked as the most-watched program of the night and the second-highest-ranked in 18-49 behind New Girl. NCIS: LA (3.6/9, 16.7 million) was also slightly up from last season’s premiere, by 6%. The other new series besides New Girl last night, CBS’ procedural Unforgettable, opened with a solid 2.9/8 in 18-49 and 14 million viewers to win its 10 PM time period. It was on par with the second part of the NCIS: LA premiere (3.0/8) CBS aired on the night last September. CBS (3.6/9, 16.7 million) finished No. 1 for the night in total viewers and second to Fox in 18-49.
While news was good for Fox and CBS last night, things looked bleak for NBC and ABC with steep ratings declines.
NBC’s The Biggest Loser (2.3/6) continued its downward ratings trend despite adding some star power with Anna Kournikova as a new trainer. It was down from last fall’s debut by 21%. Parenthood (2.1/6) was down a tenth from last week’s season premiere.
Following a Dancing With the Stars “Meet the Cast” special (2.0/6), the first Dancing result show of the season (2.8/7) was down a sharp 36% from the corresponding episode last year. At 10 PM, procedural Body of Proof (2.3/6) was down 26% from its series premiere in March.
Against increased competition on the major nets, the CW’s new drama Ringer (2 million, 0.9/3 in 18-34) was down 26% in total viewers and 18% in 18-34 from its debut last week.

I saw the pilot a few days ago on Hulu and thought it was awful. It was a poor imitation of Happy Endings with even less likeable characters. What a waste of a Zooey’s talent.
Oh, don’t be mean… there’s always enough room for TWO ripoffs of FRIENDS…
Friends was itself a ripoff of Living Single
And I suppose “Personals” the off-broadway show about singles dating in New York City that “Friends” creator’s David Crane and Marta Kauffman co-wrote and that premiered in 1985 was a ripoff of “Living Single” as well.
Actually Friends is a ripoff of Coupling and Seinfeld. The play was a ripoff of well, of Singles and Reality Bites. I’m sorry, did you think there were actual original ideas in Hollywood? Next you’ll tell me you believe in the tooth fairy…what? Aw, sorry!
All I kept hearing was “buzz” about this pilot. I watched the cold open with a slack-jawed cringe. Embarrassed for all involved. Then it got worse. Eventually, I think there were two chuckles to be found in the half hour. No real laughs. But alas… two… tiny… chuckles.
That’s what Fox does..over-hype. Same with Glee. It thought that because of all the social media chatter that in Glee it had an untouchable show and didn’t get a grip on the poor showrunner decisions of season 2 and watched the Glee movie bomb. Now the slide in audience for the show too following another over-hyped marketing campaign which contradicted media statements about a ‘back to basics’ approach and featured far too many characters. Then the opener went big on ‘show tunes’ and Lea Michele and Chris Colfer, who were badly over-exposed in season 2. The male lead Finn/Cory Monteith was barely featured, nor was his love-story which is the only thing that make the character Lea Michele plays tolerable. It was like Friends forgot Ross n Rachel in their season openers.
I didn’t think it was awful but it was so over the top with the quirky schtick. They really need to tone down Zoe’s character or it’ll get grating eventually. I can buy that she’s offbeat, but does any grown woman really sit on her couch all day and watch a romcom that many times because she got dumped? She’s supposed to be an adult, not a emo tween. It was practically bordering on parody.
But I do want the show to succeed if for no other reason that that Deputy Leo from Veronica Mars is in it.
But… how do we choose when Logan (i.e. Jason Dohring) starts guest starring on “Ringer?”
Personally, I thought this week’s cliffhanger ending on “Ringer” was great, and as long as the don’t kill off her gorgeous Welsh husband, I’m there. But I also liked “The New Girl” a lot. On “2Broke Girls” everybody seemed to be trying a little too hard, but in a celebrity death match pitting Zooey D against Kat D, Kat would definitely win.
It is a smart and excellent pilot. Let’s see if they can keep it up.
TWO BROKE GIRLS, however, was unwatchable and will rapidly die.

TWO BROKE GIRLS is a multi-cam, female, odd couple. It will run on and on until Whitney Cummings’s beach house overflows with money. I’d be willing to bet a solid CBS demo on that one.
I liked “New Girl.” Peter Chernin is unstoppable!
New Girl had a terrific advertising campaign. I’ve spent the past month all over the country and the ads were perfectly placed such that I noticed them, and I’m really bad at noticing ads.
Not only that, my friends who fall into that demographic were consistently discussing Zoey..
I NEVER LAUGH AT SHOWS MUCH, I FOUND MYSELF LAUGHING SO MUCH AT NEW GIRL, I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT, WE NEED TO LAUGH, SHE IS SO FUNNY
Mike
You obviously are a jealous individual or have no taste..which is it
Everyone has taste, its just that everyones taste differs. What you said is like saying that someone has no opinions because their opinions are different than yours. So you are either bad at interpreting what words mean or you post things before you think…which is it?
Zing! Love your response! I hate when people slam others for their opinions.
Thank you Zing.
The Zooey show is the best new comedy series on television. It’s similar rival (“2 Broke Girls”) is not as well written or acted. As a previous comment stated, “Happy Endings” is a better version of “New Girl”, sure. But Mike, at least there are two good, young comedies on television right now, so relax.
RE: Glee… the novelty is wearing off, which tends to happen with these musical series. We get it, we know what the songs will sound like (even if they’re different each week) and the characters – especially Sue Sylvester, Will, Rachel – are tired. I don’t think a 4th season is guaranteed, and if one happens it will be it’s last, and will only take place because it makes sense for syndication sales.
That being said, last night’s premiere was the best episode in a long time… however, that doesn’t say much. The edge that Murphy and Brennan brought over from Nip/Tuck and infused into season 1 of Glee was watered down in season 2, to the point of non-existent (the whole season 2 Bully thing should have been as crazy and scary and creepy as the season 1 fake pregnancy thing, but was just neutered). Hopefully Rachel gains some weight and belts out a good tune in the finale, because the fat lady needs to sing them out on this one.
New Girl is hilarious and Zooey is the best thing to happen to TV since ever. I’m in love with the show. I lost count of how many times I laughed out loud. That little thing she does with her glasses at the bar slays me every time. I rewatched it 4 times in a row. Can’t wait for more of New Girl!
F “Happy Endings”. Talk to The Show Runner. This is a Smart Sassy Comedy. Zooey is The New IT Girl Of Comedy TV. She’ll be UP for an Emmy Next season. Zooey, You Go Girl, Show them What You Got!
Hey, if the Show was a Bust. They can still Retool with the Writers and Producers. Great Opening Numbers.A Steller review By Miss Finke.
They are off to The Races.
Suck it mike!
Mike, what are you smoking? It’s the PERFECT example of Zooey’s talent. The show was written for her. It lets her do everything she is fabulous at, and I loved it. Yes, it’s a bit like Happy Endings (which I also really love), but it’s quirky and sweet and funny and I think the characters were mostly likeable, though Wayans won’t be back.
New Girl, Up All Night, and 2 Broke Girls – best new shows of the season so far!
Worst shows? Free Agents and Ringer.
New Girl was embarrassing to watch.
LOVED NEW GIRL!!!! Favorite new show of the season so far
I liked it-did not like Damon on this one as much as on Happy Endings, so I am glad he’s going to be over there (love him on that show).
Love her quirkiness…..
It’s officially clear to me that showrunners get staffers to input positive comments to deflect critical ones.
One of the bests pilots ever. All you haters just don’t like Zooey so you watched it with prejudice. Just shut your mouth now.
Love Zooey, hate the writing on this pilot.
Yep, count me in the camp of people that think Zooey is fantastic, but this pilot was not.
I didn’t dislike it as strongly as I did 2 Broke Girls at least.
New Girl got a meh from me. So did Unforgettable. I watched like 15 minutes of it and bailed out. i get it, she remembers facts, I don’t need that drilled into my head every 2 minutes.
did zooey’s mugging remind anyone else of pee wee herman?
i did not want to like the new girl, because of the hype, but couldn’t help it. great writing, and credit who ever chose the cast! I actually feel sorry for Wayans that he has to go do Happy Endings, with that annoying cast, instead of this
I thought the pilot was terrific. Well produced, directed and a cast to match. WIsh I was Peter Chernin getting all of these top end projects throw his was by his agency. It all makes sense because he negated the greatest exit deal in the history of this business.
One thing to watch out for is that Zooey’s sort of a one trick pony. She has not crossed over to starring roles in main stream movies (that’s why she’s doing tv) for a reason. The show should do its best to build up the roles of the individual guys so the show truly becomes an ensemble with a nod to Zooey. After a few weeks all of the tricks in her actors backpack will be used up and the audience will be wanting for more. Not sure she will wear well over the long haul but the guys can help her get over that.
Compared to all of the other new half-hours i’ve seen this year New Girl is at the top of it’s class.
Tess Sanchez’s husband is pretty grating, unfortunately. Not sure why he was cast… oh wait…
Ringer is an embarrassment in every way. No more chances.
How can CW be happy? They’d be better off running Buffy.
Oh. I’m rather enjoying it. Does that mean I’m embarrassing?
Absolutely LOVED, LOVED, LOVED that pilot. Funny, loveable characters, well acted. Hope to see more of it.
I love reading jealous comments from Hollywood wanna-be’s. Keep at it boys and girls. Someday, someone may actually buy that spec script from you.
“Kasjha” hit it on the head…Chernin was guaranteed a certain amount of series on the air period! and ‘first look’ at all projects. Works hard, doesn’t he…really has to tap his creative talent with everything handed to him on a plate. And while I liked “New Girl’, I wonder when Zooey’s “quirky” manner becomes a one joke note, a grating character. could be soon.
Didn’t like it. Won’t watch it again, but I wish it luck. I never root for failure.
