UPDATE:
The premiere of Simon Cowell’s The X Factor drew a modest (by mega talent competition series standards) 4.2 rating/12 share in adults 18-49 and 12.1 million viewers. That fell short not only of the January season premiere of American Idol (9.7/26, 21.6 million viewers in the fast nationals) but also the April debut of NBC’s The Voice (5.1/13, 11.8 million) in the demo. It also fell well short of Cowell’s publicly stated expectations of beating Idol and attracting 20 million viewers. In the 9 PM hour, X Factor was beaten by ABC’s Modern Family in both 18-49 and total viewers and CBS’ Criminal Minds in viewers. Still, by virtue of Fox’s long history of low fall ratings, X Factor delivered Fox its first premiere week Wednesday win in 18-49 in 18 years and its highest-rated Wednesday in 13 years.
ABC (4.1/11, 11.4 million) had a great night against X Factor, with its returning series The Middle and Modern Family both growing from last fall and hitting demo series highs, and new drama Revenge launching well at 10 PM. The hourlong season premiere of The Middle (3.0/9) at 8 PM was up 11% from last September when the show’s season opener was a half-hour. At 9 PM, off its sweep at the Emmys, Modern Family (6.0/15, 14.3 million) opened its third season up 18% from the Season 2 premiere and ranked as the highest-rated program of the night in both the demo (by a wide margin) and total viewers. It also provided a strong lead-in for new soap Revenge (3.4/9, 10.1 million), which gave ABC its best debut in the Wednesday 10 PM time period in four years, outpacing last fall’s debut of The Whole Truth in the hour by 127% and topping the hour in 18-49.
CBS’ Survivor: South Pacific (3.1/9, 10.4 million) was down 9% from its premiere last week, while Criminal Minds (4.1/10, 14.1 million) was up a fraction (3%) from last fall’s premiere. CSI (3.1/8, 12.6 million), with new leading man Ted Danson, did OK in its move to the Wednesday 10 PM slot, down a modest 9% from its higher-profile Thursday berth and winning the slot in total viewers. It improved the new time period, posting CBS’ best 18-49 and total viewer delivery in the hour with regular programming in 19 months — since a February 2010 episode of another CSI series, spinoff CSI: NY. CBS (3.5/9, 12.2 million) won the night in viewers.
At 10 PM, CSI topped in the demo and viewers NBC’s veteran Law & Order: SVU (2.3/6, 7.6 million), which also is undergoing a leading-man switch this season, following the departure of Chris Meloni. SVU was down a steep 28% in 18-49 from its premiere last fall to log its lowest-rated season premiere ever. And this was not the worst news for NBC last night as SVU was actually the highest-rated NBC program for the night, tied with new comedy Up All Night (2.3/7, 6.1 million). The Christina Applegate-starrer was down 38% from its preview behind the America’s Got Talent finale last week but, given the competition and its lead-off 8 PM position, that was a solid delivery for a show in its second week. And since NBC struggled mightily in the 8 PM hour last season (Undercovers, anyone?), Up All Night actually posted NBC’s highest in-season numbers in the 8-8:30 PM slot since last December. But things look pretty bleak for fellow new NBC comedy Free Agents (1.3/4, 3.9 million), which lost almost half of its Up All Night lead-in and is inching ever closer to cancellation. Also disappointing was the second-season premiere of David E. Kelley’s Harry’s Law (1.2/3, 7.3 million), which hit a series low at 9 PM, down 38% in the demo from its January debut.
PREVIOUS 7:30 AM: Despite Simon Cowell’s statements yesterday that he wants his The X Factor to beat American Idol (and every other show) in the ratings, that doesn’t seem to be be happening, at least not with the X Factor premiere last night. In the metered-market household ratings, Fox’s singing competition show drew an 8.8 household rating, compared to the 14.2 rating for the Idol season premiere last January. In head-to-head competition, the show was beaten by both ABC’s Modern Family (9.7) and CBS’ Criminal Minds (9.0). So X Factor appears to be closer to NBC’s The Voice than Idol ratings-wise, which has actually been more or less Fox’s projection (but not Cowell’s). CBS’ CSI did OK in its move to Wednesday, dominating the 10 PM hour with a 7.9 rating. More when the fast-national ratings are released in about an hour.

Maybe Americans are getting sick of sadistic, tacky, lowbrow garbage hand-delivered by a sleazy, boiled-looking creep with dead eyes. Can’t wait until this ‘format’ is washed out to sea, to join the bloated media corpses of Paris Hitlon, various skanky Housewives et al. Sink ON!
God somebody put this comment on a billboard on Sunset!
X Factor is American Idol except for auditions in front a an audience and more judges. Only the size of the prize is different…and of course…the ratings.
Idol will probably always be the winner while X Factor, The Voice, The Sing Off and all the others shows fight it out for second place.
FOX should’ve kept it on Tuesdays as Wednesdays are more competitive. I’m guessing Thursday’s numbers wil be worse.
Something is slightly off with this version compared to the UK. It’s like it moves faster and then highlights only mediocre/over-praised singers.
Also, take note of the message boards on various sites with viewers saying they liked/wanted to see more of Cheryl and they found Nicole annoying.
Shake things up Simon. Bring back Cheryl!!
Compared to the UK version this episode showcased WAY more decent singers. There was more genuinely great sinners in last nights episode than the entire UK season so far.
Its also great to see the judges disagree on how good someone is, again something that didn’t happen at all in this years UK version. The judges never disagreed over someone who was good but someone may have thought not good enough – they only disagreed over the crazies…
And thank god it moves faster. In this years UK X Factor premiers, you only saw 6 singers!!
They could put Big Bird in the chair and no one would care.
I’ll say it again: barely anybody in the US knows/cares who Cheryl Cole is, she wouldn’t make a lick of difference in the ratings.
This ADHD country BARELY remember Nicole Scherzinger (shoulda used a pseudonym kid) as the lead singer of the..what was it again, the Kittycat Dolls?
yikes!
SWEET REVENGE, Simon you are a HORRIBLE PERSON for firing Cheryl from X Factor U.S. CHERYL IS AWESOME from a proud American fan of Cheryl. you will never beat American Idol
I saw the Show Last Night, Loved it!.Wait for Word of Mouth. The PR Machine. All those Chat Rooms. Wait till Nikki Finke gets a Backstage Pass. The Show will get more Popular.Crank it Up Simon.Pull out that Check Book and Let’s get Busy. This is Great family Entertainment.
No One Does It Better than SIMON COWELL.
yes – we will watch out for the PR machine, Dr (upscale) Joseph (real name?) Sinda(hints at diversity). Or is the name an anagram of PMK-BNC.
Because you clearly didn’t watch the freshly laid turd that so elegantly got flushed down the crapper.
Is it really fair to judge X-Factor against American Idol? That’s putting a new show up against an established ratings giant. I tuned in for a couple of minutes and I like the host much better than Ryan Seacrest but I thought I was watching Idol! Simon, check. Paula, check. Black guy with glasses, check. Pretty girl in the music biz most people are unaware of, check. So this is different than Idol how?
I agree with Dr. Joseph. This show will pick up quickly via word of mouth. I watched it last night and loved it. I think the audience factor helps heighten the emotion. I also agree that Cheryl Cole was better than the Pusscat, who I found to be obnoxiously arrogant. Loved the banter between LA Reid and Simon.
It was dull, and I was actually looking forward to it. They seriously need to find more contestants who can carry a tune, it was pitchy, pitchy, pitchy and you actually needed Randy Jackson around for one to say it.
Firing Cheryl Cole was stupid, but the show will probably pick up steam.
American Idol’s ratings this year prove that Simon Cowell had little, if anything, to do with that show’s success.
This new show’s ratings further underscore his tepid appeal.
As comeuppances go, this one is rather pleasant . . .
As Simon always says, the American people are not stupid, they know talent when they see it, and here they’ve voted with their remote controls.
Looks like NBC…yes, the whole network…is in danger of cancellation. The only thing they have going for them is football.
“Wonder Woman” probably looks good to NBC now.
Hell, “The Cape” probably looks good to them now.
Simon, I know how big an ego you have so I also know you are reading these comments. I liked the show but LOSE the shmaltz. The fake rivalry between you and L.A Reid, LOSE IT. The cheesy audience cut aways, LOSE IT. AND, Cheryl Cole is great. Why would you can her for washed up Nicole Sherzinger?. Interscope has sunk millions into that girl and they may sell 20,000 records next week. X FACTOR, more like FEAR FACTOR!
At this point I am not a big fan, but things could change.
The U.S. audience is a little sick of Cowell and his act. X-Factor is really cheesy in the worst way because it thinks its cutting edge.
Those are really really disappointing numbers for ‘X Factor’. I honestly expected something close to a 6. Well, FOX execs must be gloomy today and still clinging to the results of ‘New Girl’. It should have done better.
Given how well comedies have done this week in the ratings starting with CBS on Monday, does it suprise anyone that Networks are ordering comedy scripts/ pilot projects like crazy?!
‘Modern Family’ is really red red blazing hot.
Sad NBC.
I agree that this American version of The X-Factor was slightly off from the UK version (which knows how to get it right… even this year with 3 new judges). I think certain talent was WAY overhyped in tonight’s episode. I also felt like the bad auditions were too obviously bad or staged (if that makes sense).
Additionally, the audition process on these types of shows becomes tedious. I think it would have been wiser to make the premiere just 1 hour long, so more viewers would be comfortable committing to this new show.
Lastly, LOL @ the almost universal praise for Cheryl Cole and the bashing of Nicole. Hilarious! Hopefully Simon can bring back Cheryl eventually… either later this season or for next.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I do believe Idol’s ratings during its first season averaged around 12 million. Season two saw the ratings jump to over 20 million. So perhaps X-Factor will have a similar jump – at least Simon hopes so.
I doubt it. American Idol was a fresh format (at the time) that took time to grow. This is a very tired format that has been beaten to death.
The shows ratings will dip and then hold for the duration like America’s Got Talent or The Voice. (both equally crappy shows.)
First three days of the week for NBC are so bad, good grief. Up All Night won’t be cancelled though because of Lorne and the SNL Cabal. They will do everything in their power to keep that show on the air, even if it dips below a 2.0. Interested to see what happens tonight with Community, The Office and Prime Suspect.
I watched THE X FACTOR, yes I did. Granted, I had nothing better to do last night. But, what a corny show, start to finish. I really hate watching kids who think they are cute, try to sing. I’d rather watch CNN, over eat, and call it a night.
X-FACTOR gave me a headache. By 9 pm, I went to my DVR to watch the Daily Show and Colbert report instead. X-Factor is AWFUL, same drama queens, same washed-up no talents that will go nowhere, and most of all the fucking non-stop screaming from the audience was just too much.
And most of all I found the show OFFENSIVE, when they showed the guy dropping his pants and swinging his tiny dick. It was not funny, it was just plain stupid to not edit him out. I know, I know, I am a prude, but I would hate being the parent of an 8 year old who wants to watch this garbage. What does it matter to Fox or Cowell, just another excuse to promote the X-FACTOR by placing it over the dude’s dick.
This is how low TV has come to; no wonder cable is wiping the floor with the networks.
Cable is your best bet for television shows…..this show is living proof!
I hope they still bring Cheryl Cole in as a guest judge one day on the U.S. version of The X Factor as well as Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland and Tulisa Contostavlos from the UK X Factor.
I’m pretty sure they won’t, considering…wait, who the fuck are those people?
“Up All Night” is terrific! Seriously, NBC should have thought to schedule the single cam show with the rest of the Thursday line-up (it would do solid behind “The Office”). I strongly believe that “Whitney” would work much better on Wednesdays with fellow multi-cam “Are You There Vodka…”
Also, NBC was foolish for pulling two-hour reality shows two days in a row. It would help success if both “The Sing Off” and “The Biggest Loser” were reduced to one hour. Putting “Parenthood” in the hammock position between “Harry’s Law” or another new drama would’ve greatly positioned NBC for a chance at changing…
“Anna”…there is no Dr. Joseph!. You’re an idiot. These are solicited comments…and let me add “Revenge”. It was pathetic. So many characters, flash backs…couldn’t even follow it and when I could….”Who cares???.They should have set it at “The Playboy Club” and we coud have “Stayed Up All Night” watching three pieces of crap in a row! so proud of Ron Howard. What’s happened to his good taste and Robert Greenblatt’s? expect more from them.
Gents: This Blog is more Entertaining than Anything NBC can currently put Up. There Shows are like Ducks in a Shooting Gallery.Simon, you want to Pump Up Numbers fast. Put Cheryl Cole with Nikki Finke in The Wings just off stage and let them do Live Blogs underneath where they put the icon’s for up coming shows. I like The banter with LA Reid and Simon Cowell. It’s like Wrestling, well rehearsed so know one really go’s to The Hospital.Did you check out LA Reids Shoes. Custom made. He’s a Fashionesta. I can’t wait for The Kat Fights! They will
come and be more controversal.Carry ON.
