Starz has ordered a second 10-episode season of upcoming drama Boss ahead of the series’ October 21 premiere. A couple of years ago, the network did the same with its flagship series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Boss, from Lionsgate TV, stars Kelsey Grammer as a ruthless Chicago mayor who has a secret that threatens to topple him. Boss was created by feature writer Farhad Safinia (Apocalypto), with Gus Van Sant making his TV debut directing the first episode. Production on Season 2 is slated to begin in early 2012. Starz originally picked up Boss straight-to-series by Starz last year. “The first time we read Farhad’s script, we knew we had to make Boss,” the pay cable network’s president and CEO Chris Albrecht said. “With each episode, the story grew richer, and the cast continues to turn in breakthrough performances.” There has been buzz about former Frasier star Grammer’s performance, which has been compared to those of other sitcom leading men who have transitioned to playing dark characters on cable dramas like Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston and The Shield‘s Michael Chiklis. Co-starring opposite Grammer on Boss are Connie Nielsen, Jeff Hephner, Hannah Ware, Kathleen Robertson and Troy Garity. “It’s nice to get this vote of confidence,” Grammer said. “Good thinking, I love this show.” Grammer executive produces Boss with Safinia, Van Sant, Brian Sher, Stella Bulochnikov, Richard Levine and Lyn Greene. It is kind of ironic that Hephner is getting a second-season renewal for the show that he booked shortly after he was let go from The Playboy Club — where he had been cast as the lead — on the same day Playboy‘s second-week ratings took a dive, spelling a certain cancellation for the NBC period drama. Here is a trailer for Boss:

YAY. The pilot is incredible. Jeff Hephner is about to break out BIG from this. Good for Starz.
Nice! This show is intense and will find a strong following. Kelsey will win an Emmy.
Thanks for confirming that this show is terrible. I’ve seen this stunt before. It translates to “We spent a lot of money and time on this show, but it sucked, so we will try to fool people into thinking it’s good.”
Um have you seen it? It’s called KELSEY is a commodity and they want to lock him down.
Oh yes Roger, that is genius. They are going to spend a whole ton of money producing a second season into tricking you into watching the first season. You are so smart you should run NBC.
Thank you for this insight into NBC’s programming.
Actually, they spent very little on this show compared to the big budget schlock you find on network TV. Great talent, great writing, great vision… maybe Starz is just smart enough to know a good thing when they see it?
The show is awesome – watch it before you make your mind up – eh
Love the show…well-crafted characters and a twisting-turning plot. Roger must be missing the fascination of afternoon Oprah.
I can not wait. Happy for Jeff.. Sorry Camille!
This is great news for a highly anticipated series. I agree, this seems like the perfect fit for Kelsey right now. Not to mention Kathleen Robertson, such an amazing talent. She deserves a successful series.
Darn it. I am actually getting into The Playboy Club!
Nice. The cast is really strong. Well deserved.
great news for chicago’s film industry! can’t wait to see this show.
A rumor has started that the show will be moved to NY for fliming. Like ER the chicago scenes where shot on location about four times a year. The same can be done with Boss. As an actor we need this show filmed here along with Payboy!
This pilot is simply a series of monologues. Great performances, but I like to see character interaction, not 3 minute speeches where one person listens to another in silence. Not a good pilot AT ALL unless you like watching several one-sided ‘conversations’. As for the plot and its corruption themes… blah blah blah– I’ve seen it before–and better. HO-HUM
so awsome! the script was AMAZING and the cast sounds really xciting! Ill b watching for sure!
I hope it’s as good as Crash!
Can I ask how Kelsey Grammer is a commodity when he hasn’t had a successful since Frasier went away? Plus what is Starz huffing and where can I get some?
saw the first episode. this show is fantastic. kelsey is riveting as is the rest of the cast.
HUH? Are you kidding me? I can’t stand Kelsey Grammer and this would be the last show on TV and I would STILL not watch it.
I hope it sinks real fast!! The man’s ego makes me SICK!
.. he’s an actor .. acting a large ego ….
This is a really good series and it’s great to know they are already renewing it. Kelsey Grammer is an incredible actor and the cast and plot make it a hit. Thanks for finally putting something good on cable we have to pay for.
Fantastic writing, acting, great characters. Art imitates life, after all and this series captures politics, crime and the blurry line that barely separates the two. Kelsey Grammer is fantastic in the role of Mayor Tom Kane. I am looking forward to the second season.
Agreed!
Great show, I can’t wait for season 2!
I love this show and can’t wait for season 2. The acting is wonderful, the plots are great and the characters are so real. I was at the TV every Friday at 10:00 pm faithfully. Please dont make us wait until September for season 2.
This show is great. It should be part of a daily series on regular TV. It has the potential to be on # 1 ranking. It’s politics and drama mixed perfectly.
Put’s other TV Drama shows to shame! Can’t wait for the new shows to begin!! Kelsey at this best.
Great series! When will season 2 premier
it was a great show.
superb performance by kelsey .
can’t wait for 2nd season to start.
it seems that the boss is dying in the last scene- how can the series continue?
This is one of the best new series’ that has come out in a long time! If the world of politics is of interest to you, you will find yourself addicted immediately. Just to see how far these people will go to further their quest for power is astounding. The scary part is that this stuff may not have been just drummed up. I believe to some degree this is life for some career politicians. Can’t wait for season two!!! Hurry up!!
This is amazing, can’t wait for 2nd season!
