Stephen King announced the book’s possibility back in 2009, but it wasn’t made official until last weekend when he read an excerpt during a George Mason University awards ceremony. The sequel to The Shining is called Dr. Sleep starring psychic kiddie Danny (aka “Doc”) 30 years later. Now he eases the minds of dying hospice residents. Until some vampires arrive. Too bad Stanley Kubrick isn’t still around. Here’s the novelist reading a passage from Dr Sleep:

Vampires?!?!? Vampires?!?!?! The sequel to the Shining involves VAMPIRES!!??!?!?
Puhleeze.
Why don’t they make a sequel to Poltergeist with Werewolves?!?!
King’s vampires aren’t what you would expect. They play a major factor in the Dark Tower series (the themes of which have always extended into his other work). They aren’t standard bloodsuckers, more like roaming agents of a greater evil.
As far as I’m concerned, he can do no wrong. He doesn’t get anywhere near the “literary” respect he deserves.
Great comment, Lansky. It’s hilarious reading some of the posts on here by people who are just cutting and pasting their negative comments for all vampire, zombie, and werewolf related projects.
While I agree that the negativity is well deserved for the creatively absent hacks jumping onto the supernatural bandwagon, you can’t say this about Stephen King. The guys is a cultural and literary icon. He obviously didn’t invent vampires, but he was writing about them way before the Twilight/True Blood/Vampire Diaries phenomenon existed, perhaps even before some of the actors and writers were even born.
If Stephen King wants to write about vampires, he’ll write about vampires. If nothing else, to remind all the losers who are in love with these GQ/Vogue bloodsucking wussies what vampires are really all about.
Mr. King has been a part of some pretty awful cinematic junk in the past. Let us not forget “Maximum Overdrive” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_Overdrive). Kubrick was a cinematic genius, on the other hand. “The Shining” is terrifying because of the horror within that is manifested on the surface of otherwise apparently normal individuals, and accentuated through the unconventional cinematic style of the piece. Vampires, and other supernatural beings do not have any real business following suit to Kubrick’s film. King is free to do whatever he pleases, and make whatever vampire movies he wants. I just think it is a cheap mistake to bill the project as a sequel, unofficial or otherwise, to “The Shining.”
It’s a sequel to Kings’ novel, not to Kubrick’s film. Don’t get me wrong, I love the film much more than the book but I trust King to have a good idea that hooks vampires, of the psychic persuasion, to the world of The Shining, and to Danny Torrance. As long as he isn’t writing a screenplay, I like his stories.
You liked the movie more than the book? I think you should read the book again – this IS the scariest BOOK i’ve ever read – if you ask me Jack Nicholson was extremely miscast in the movie.
@ Lansky – I completely agree he does not get enough respect. As for The Dark Tower series. They are easily my favorite books. Can not even guess how many times I have read them. I love how there is something in all of his books related to the DT.
You better listen because this story is true… that’s the scary part..
Oh, quiet you. I love SK. You can’t say he’s doing it for the money because he doesn’t need it but he loves to write and follow wherever his creative muses take him. I’m in! So calm down…
Or a prequel to Twilight with zombies? I mean the living dead, brain munching kind of zombies, not the ‘actors’ cast in the actual films.
It amazes me how few sites actually describe the correct plot: they are not vampires, people! They are some kind of weirdos feeding on psychic abilities and drive across the country. And maybe they pick up on Danny’s shining. Stop making half-assed assumptions and wait for the damn book.
What makes you think they’re not already working on it?
Um… You do know King was doing the Vampire thing years ago with Salem’s Lot?
Surely this must be a joke of some kind? Surely…please…tell me it is…otherwise, I just…I don’t know…I’ll punch a pillow…and nobody wants that…
Oh geez lueez, vampires is the best he could come up with? Are they the Twilight sort or Fright Night type? I’m surprised it doesn’t feature zombies.
I’m frozen with an expression like Jack Torrance reading this news.
I share Dr. Know’s reaction – why vampires? If King wants to use vampires he might as well just write a sequel to Salem’s Lot.
What in the actual fuck.
Brilliantly stated, sir. Shame to see SK putting vampires into THE SHINING, it was brilliant as a psychological horror story, without Robert Pattinson et al.
Given King’s penchant for having characters in his universe cross paths, I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns out to be a Shining/Salem’s Lot crossover.
That would be awesome!
The Shining was always one of my favorite books. I think what has always drawn me to read this book over and over has been the sence of realism. With this new book though, it seems that Mr. King is going after the Twilight crowd of non-believability. I won’t be buying this new book.
Yes, you will.
I believe it seems as if Steve has finally (and wisely) given up on his dream of being a “legitimate dramatic writer” who wins awards and accepted his lot in life as “pulp horror writer” who makes money. Good for him, he’ll sleep easier in his old age.
Actually it should be the other way around. After he completed the Dark Tower series, he should have focused more on literary works based in the real and actual world. Stories like “Shawshank Redemption” and “The Body” are proof he had the chops to do it. Certainly he would do a better job than a lot of the drivel that passes for “literary” fiction these days.
How ridiculous! The entertainment industry ain’t what it used to be -I wouldn’t put out one cent to see that dumb, silly trash. More vampires – puhleez.
Look…people…It’s STEPHEN KING. I think the man knows how to write. I mean..I could be wrong..I just think I heard somewhere he did one or two successful books <>. He makes gold. And I agree with previous comments…he loves to crossover characters. And his vampires rule! If he’s doing it..it’s for a reason, and it’s going to be kick azz! SK FAN FOR LIFE!
About a quarter century too late. I stopped reading/caring about Stephen King a long, long time ago. The books just got fatter, not better. When he ran out of his original stash from the trunk, you know the early books, he stopped period. Somewhere along the way they began paying him by the word, not by the good, and it definitely shows. Over and over again.
So it sounds less like a sequel and more like a completely new everything, just using the character of an adult Danny Torrance as the lead. So why call it a sequel? Oh, right- $$$
While I understand some people’s reactions to vampires (UGH!), Stephen King has rarely fallen into tired old genre traps that others might fall into. I seriously doubt he’d need to go after a Twilight crowd or would care to — for any reason. I think, after all his hard work and success over the past 40 years or so, the man deserves the benefit of the doubt. Why don’t you read it before you criticize him? Or does that make too much sense?
Wow people. The first book was about a Haunted House. It wasn’t War and Peace and King wrote it, not you. Read the sequel or don’t and shut the hell up.
anyone who doesnt like the idea of vampires clearly hasnt read much of King’s other works such as salems lot and the dark tower. Trust me this book will be good!!
Get ready for more Stephen Weber.
Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
Actually, it’s a good thing that Kubrick isn’t still around. “The Shining” was the one film that I really believe Kubrick screwed up completely. “The Shining”, at the time – and, probably, still – was my favorite SK novel. Kubric butchered it to the point of being unrecognizable.
Still, if Kubrick was still around, he, most likely, would not entertain filming a sequel; I respect him enough to have confidence in this statement.
I was a kid when I saw “The Shining” and I was bored. Now here is a sequel I will never watch! To me it sounds like n”Shining Meets Salem’s Lot”
This is not a sequel to the movie!!!!! this is a sequel to the novel
I’m all over this. I have read just about everything Steven King has written and wait with great anticipation for this. I don’t care if it’s vampires, wearewolves, zombies, witches or whatever…this guy is a master and I will follow where ever he leads.
Vampires? Doesn’t Stephen King know that Alien Bio-duplicators & the Robots of the future enslave the so-called “vampires” during their war with the impending Mongol army in the Future Wars? Vampires are just not plausible. Unless he’s passing on disinformation. But why…Oh my god! Stephen King is one of them! Which “them” I am still not sure.
I like the idea of following up with Danny (still hoping for an IT sequel myself), but vampires? I’ll give it a try, out of faith–but please, Mr. King, please, please don’t turn into George Lucas.
I whole heartedly AGREE w/FilmFreak. SK is my favorite writer. He never fails to ‘rock’ my imagination.
Just read “The Exorcist”, yes by William Peter Blatty, is up for pre-order and available on Amazon. The 40 year edition.
I read his interview. The origional was a first draft WTF!. That book scared the shi* out of me. The new book as Blatty stated goes deeper into the characters and story. He said he never felt he got that story right to his satisfaction, so a lot of new material here. The interview/article I came across on a site: The Dread.
I’m still ‘freaking’ the origional was a first draft that stayed in the top 10, for 57 weeks.
I have pre-purchased the book and will buy anything SK writes.
Double Mumbo-Jumbo.
I don’t know how true this is, but I’ve heard that King secretly writes in many genres. Eventually, a giant list of titles currently published under pseudonyms will be revealed to the public. He isn’t just just a horror writer. That may be his bread and butter, but also he’s proven, even under his own name, that many of his stories have dramatic weight to them.
