Syfy has renewed freshman drama Alphas for a second season with a 13-episode order. The series, from BermanBraun, Universal Cable Prods. and writers Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, has been a solid ratings performer airing behind veteran Warehouse 13. Alphas, whose Season 2 will premiere in 2012, stars David Strathairn and follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. Penn is executive producing with showrunner Ira Steven Behr and BermanBraun’s Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein.

This series is so smart and intelligent. Light years about everything else on Syfy. NBCUniversal should have moved the show to NBC instead. It’s certainly better than Playboy Club will probably be.
Is this BermanBraun’s first second season pick-up?

I couldn’t watch more than 2 episodes… boring, annoying characters… I like the guy in charge… always have… can’t stand any of the others. I tried it, it went into my WHO CARES file. Give us back Eureka!!!
syfy really has gone above and beyond with this one. great cast, interesting characters and writing that is open to some real development for the characters brings a really fresh take on the standard procedural. i could see this show becoming big for the net like the shield was for fx

i really like Alphas, think its a smart show and has a different concept…its fresh, and anything that offers me David Stratheim on a weekly basis is fine by me.

Boring rip off the the almost as boring “Mutant X” from a few years back, just cheaper looking with rote plots, cliche “character development” and public access cable production values.
The non demanding geeks like their “syfy” pablum pre-chewed and unchallenging. Of course it’s a minor hit. This is the same infantile audience that made “ghost hunter” a hit and found “Caprica” and SGU “too dark and challenging”….
You stargate and caprica fans bore me. Alphas is the new Battlestar. All other shows pale in comparison.

Great, but stop with the 13 episode orders and do a full 22 episodes. The fear with 13 is that they will split it into two seasons (2.0 and2.5) and air those 13 over the course of 2 years.
I think this is one of the best ensembles on TV.
It was Strathairn who perked my interest but guys like Ryan Cartwright keep me coming back.
I hate that they killed off Callum Keith Rennie, but I guess he had other things to do like The Killing. *shrug*.

The Bill and Gary’s Excellent Adventure episode could be a spinoff to its own series it worked so effectively. They finally got the characterizations and powers interacting well together within the plot. They should use that as the model going forward. Slowly but surely the show is getting better.
Love Alphas, the characters, and especially the theme song! I keep hearing it in my mind – found out Trey Lockerbie sings it… Love his voice!
