TBS is expanding its relationship with late-night host Conan O’Brien to primetime. The cable network has ordered a half-hour comedy pilot from O’Brien’s Warner Bros TV-based production company Conaco. WBTV’s cable division Warner Horizon Television will produce. The multi-camera sitcom, written by Ben Wexler (Still Standing), Ross Novie (Secret Girlfriend) and Jay Rondot (Secret Girlfriend), centers on a family man who quits his day job and returns to the neighborhood where he grew up. There, he reunites with his former best friend. Wexler, Novie and Rondot are executive producing with O’Brien, David Kissinger and Jeff Ross. Wexler will serve as the showrunner for the untitled pilot, which is slated to begin shooting this year. After veering into developing hourlong comedies for the past two years, TBS is returning to the half-hour comedy genre with two multi-camera pilots ordered over the past two weeks: the O’Brien-produced buddy sitcom and the recently ordered Men at Work, created by Breckin Meyer and produced by Jamie Tarses.

*That’s* a show pitch that got greenlighted?
Yeesh?
Conan is extremely talented. He just needs to find the best venue to unleash it. I don’t like him behind a desk doing interviews. He doesn’t seem comfortable interviewing. I’d rather watch him doing comedy. I would love to see him in a weekly comedy series. Where he has to perform/act. I think if they found the right plot, he would flourish. He’s like Red Skelton. He needs to do his “shtick”. The guy is a gem. Let him shine TBS!
Conan has been behind a desk for almost twenty years now. If this doesn’t work ultimately work out, he will probably just become a producer or something.
I don’t count up 20 years behind the desk for Conan. More like almost 10 years. He did Late Night with Conan O’Brian for 6 years and the Tonight Show for what…2 years. Now this one on TBS that hasn’t been on a year yet I believe.
You must not be a Conan fan at all. He’s been hosting since 1993. You do realize next year is 2012 right?
My time does fly doesn’t it! Now back to my point and that was “The Desk”. I still think he still should get rid of it. Make us laugh as only he can do, with his crazy/physical, genius style of humor. That’s where he shines. Is at his best. Please don’t be so defensive on Conan’s behalf. I’m not trying to “insult” him. I’m only suggesting. I’ve read that TBS was thinking about canceling his show all together because of low ratings. That’s why I bought the subject up in the first place. Not meant to insult Conan. And I am a fan and I have watched him since he first stated on NBC. Whatever year it was. What are you here for…to argue? Be nice!
Maybe Sharon C. is onto something. Maybe it’s Conan who should have been in prime time on NBC and as sketch not talk. I think his style never calmed down from the “apology tour” of his first days on the show and how all of that went down. Smart guy too. He could have just as easily done a Cavett or can at some point in the future.
Conan could do a “Saturday Night Live” format kind of show on TBS that would be fantastic. That’s what he’s meant to do. I hope someone from TBS reads this!
lol @ all you guys suggesting Conan has been doing the wrong job for nearly 20 years. Grasping at straws here, kinda.
Not the wrong job. The wrong format. I love Conan. Have been a fan from the very beginning. Plus he’s not a fake/a phony, which is more than I can say for most of them.
Look how long Alex Baldwin did drama on the big screen. He’s had more success doing comedy on 30 Rock on TV for the past 5 years than he’s had in his whole career as a dramatic actor.
TBS isn’t expanding any relationship, please… only honoring the iron-tight contract they were forced to sign to get him on their late night network.A show which sadly is in the toilet( and TBS destroyed) and has Connan really unhappy…and why does David Kissinger still have a job> he’s really produced alot of successful shows for Conan, hasn’t he?
that’s an incredibly narrow minded statement. TBS has no obligation to sign up with Conan for yet another show, the contract they have is for his existing show! Also he does not seem unhappy in the least and there is no reason to believe he is. he actually seems grateful and content at tbs. furthermore not all good shows are immediately successful and gets canceled before their prime. but if u take internet hits into account that show is a definite success. thankfully a few production companies are willing to give real talent a chance instead of just concentrating on making superficial rating hits.
Been watching still standing reruns on abcf and for a very formulaic shlub dad hot wife comedy the writing was actually very good. So be interesting to see wexler.
IMOMO! I don’t understand why they would put him in the same format that didn’t work on NBC and think it was going to work because it’s on TBS. Time slot had nothing to do with it. I just don’t think he’s at his best behind a desk. When he first started, he had more freedom with his show. Now it seems they don’t want him doing his “schtick” anymore. NBC made him tone it down. Said he was too childish/silly. They wanted to try to turn him into something he’s not. A sit-down TV host/interviewer. We want that silly/child like Conan back!
Funny how everyone only wants to talk about Conan, but no mention regarding what the article is ACTUALLY about, which is a new show from the creators of “The Rascal” on Crackle. If you haven’t seen it but still want to feel like your opinion matters as if you have any form of schooling or education, you may want to check it out. Pretty brilliant, actually.
