After weeks of rumors, TNT today made it official: the Jada Pinkett Smith-starring medical drama Hawthorne is being canceled after 3 seasons. Also on the bubble with a 50/50 chance of return is the network’s sophomore Memphis Beat. Of the 2, Memphis Beat has been the stronger performer, ending its second season a couple of weeks ago with 4.9 million viewers for the finale. Hawthorne‘s Season 3 closer posted 3.6 million viewers. Hawthorne is the second TNT series to get the axe this summer following the cancellation of Men of a Certain Age. Here is the network’s statement:
TNT has decided not to order a fourth season of HawthoRNe. TNT truly appreciates the tremendous dedication of everyone involved in HawthoRNe. The series gave TNT the opportunity to work with many outstanding people, including Jada Pinkett Smith and the rest of the show’s talented cast, crew, producers and writers. We wish everyone involved with HawthoRNe nothing but the best.
Pinkett Smith also addressed the cancellation online. “I want to say thank you to all the fans for being Hawthorne soldiers…All our facebook fans…twitter soldiers and viewers…you held us down,” she wrote. “Of course you know there is more to come…believe it!”

Not doubting TNT’s professional count, but from what I’ve seen and heard, Memphis Beat is loved by at least half of the TV audience. After 2 seasons of trying different methods and story lines, key personalities, TNT has come up with a real WINNER. You don’t, I’m sure, want to be responsible for breaking millions of hearts and we don’t want TNT to stop being our favorite network. YOU ROCK……..KEEP ROCKING!!!
Here, here!
KEEP THE BEAT, TNT!
Hey, let’s use that slogan, people.
Love memphis beat so i would love it to come back for another season, just wish it would have more episodes cause it’ to short and more Elvis please.
Why would u cancel Memphis bean since it has higher rating then Frankin and Bash and tnt renewed it for another season.
Can’t say I didn’t see this coming. The world didn’t need another doctor show. I remember being so excited that Jada Pinkett Smith was coming to TV and my heart sank when I found out that it was in this tired old concept.
Here’s to hoping she picks up her film career or comes back to TV with something we haven’t seen a million times.
Damn. I don’t understand how the show cancel but the ratings are good.
My understanding is basically the Dreadful Rizzoli and Ilses keeps breaking records for ratings on basic cable. TNT continues to use the statement “we know drama” Yet it idiotically cancels Great TV like Men Of A Certain Age. They only have two quality shows in their lineup right now which are Southland and The Closer.
SO TNT should change it’s motto to:
“WE MAKE AVERAGE CRIME PROCEDURALS YOU CAN ALREADY FIND ON BROADCAST”
And what was your job at “Men Of A Certain Age”?.
I actually Never watched and episode of M.O.C.A. I just hate that TNT continues to lie that it provides quality TV.
I think Rizzoli and Isles only makes the cut because it follows The Closer. I watched it all of last season for that very same reason. They start it while rolling the credits for The Closer. And the opening is always grabs your attention. However, I was cosistently disappointed time and time again with that show. I made a conscience decision to change the channel once The Closer is over this season. I have not been disappointed.
I am so disappointed about the cancellation of Hawthorne, and Memphis Beat were some of the best showed aired on TNT in many years since the Closer aired which is another one of my favorite shows on TNT.
how long till the divorce is officially announced too ?
Bingo!
A show with middling to poor ratings could be tolerated so long as TNT/TW was very interested in being in “the keeping-Will Smith-happy-business” (movies, etc.) – but *now* the “keeping-Will Smith-happy-business” requires a reversal – dumping his divorcee.
She got the job because of him and…she lost the job because of him.
This is one of the more clear cut, high profile examples in Hollywood history…
jade dosent need will to get an acting job shes a great actress on her own she was before him and she’ll continue to be after u sound like one of those ugly women just happy to see a beautiful one lose out but i think it will be tnt’s lost because that show was the main reason alot of people start watching that channal now people will have to fine something new around that season i just hope someone eles pick up the show
So upset about this! Why is it that all the great shows get the axe? I understand it’s a ratings game but come on — isn’t there some way we can save quality television programming? I guess until tv audiences get taste we’ll see more great shows disappear with the wind.
I was also upset when I heard they were canceling this show. Hawthorne was one the main reason I came back to TNT. I think they’re making a mistake canceling this show, maybe another network will pick it up.
Agree totally!!! I just started watching Hawthorne(first season was boring) and then got to the point that I couldn’t miss it. I loved the chemistry between Pickett and Anthony. Calling all Hawthorne viewers, what can we do to
get it picked up by another station. I am through with TNT. Memphis Beat is the only thing left worth watching.
I hated they cancelled Hawthorne, I was waiting for season 4 to find out what happen to Nick now we will never know. I’m a nurse of 32 years, on Tuesday nights I would rush home from work just to watch Hawthorne. There goes my Tuesday night routine. It’s sad that they always cancel the good tv shows. Thanks God for dvd’s I own the lst and 2nd seasons of Hawthorne can’t wait for the third season to come out on dvd. Jada is my girl. I hope another station will pick her up. Jada will miss you.
The way Season 3 was hacked all to pieces sadly this really doesn’t surprise me about ‘HawthoRNe’. Folks can say all the negative and off the wall comments they want but that show really did have a lot of viewers, and more folks were coming aboard after Season 2 and Season 3 episodes 1 and 2, but after episode 3 it never got back it’s footing.
I really hope and pray that Michael Vartan ends up on another “good” series sometime “soon”, as for Jada I won’t be watching anything else that she puts out, until or unless she gets her Writing style together (the ending of ‘HawthoRNe’ was terrible).
I agree, I was just getting into ‘Hawthorne’, the 1st season was hard to get into but after a while it picked up. What show doesn’t have so-so starts or second seasons but take off after that? Marc Anthony was amazing and so was Jada. It made me laugh, cry, sit on the edge of my seat…. So emotionally good. I wish there was some way to save this show….
I am very disappointed about the cancellation of Hawthorne show. My main pleasure on Tuesdays was watching the show having lined up with the Closer on Mondays. How can you cancel the show with the dialogue hanging like that? We don’t know whether Mark Anthony died, whether the divorce was finalized???? Hello, who do you think we are? We are dedicated good show lovers. You can’t play with our feelings like that.
From what I hear TNT is trying to bring back the ‘Law & Order’ franchise (the original series and ‘Law & Order: LA’, which NBC cancelled in May of 2010 and 2011).
‘Hawthorne’ in it’s first season was the best, after that the ship started to sink. Pinkett-Smith is what kept this show going though. But look for the ‘Law & Order’ franchise to plant it’s feet on TNT by Summer 2012.
Agree. The first season was very strong, or maybe I mean the 2nd – all I know is I came to the series late and ordered season 1 on DVD from Netflix after I’d started watching season 2. We watched the whole season in 2-days, was a nice marathon. Most of last year and almost all of this year sucked. I’m very sad to hear its cancelled, I hope someone else picks it up. When it started I thought it’d be the modern day Emergency 51, instead it morphed into a standard dramcom.
Hawthorne sucked do not mess with my Leverage this shows got balls!
Wait, LEVERAGE has got balls?!?! Seriously?!?! The show with the long-haired guy that beats people up? That’s balls? Oy, you should really check the definition of “balls”, dude.
His character has major balls, and he kicks major azz without having to use weapons! Don’t talk ish about Leverage! One of the best shows on tv period!
RLS: Really? So what should’ve Jada Smith created…a show like your tired favorite, Law & Order-Criminal Intent? Go sit down somewhere and hash out your 14th unsold screenplay.
Hey i agree with RLS. Writer and producers of scripted TV need stop setting a low bar. Why is so very few show are going for complexity, authenticity, and ambition. If you wan’t do another Cop/lawyer/doctor procedural. Your have to make it distinct, bring new ideas, explore new territory and be aware of other great series in that genre that have come before. That way they can avoid reselling and repackaging something people have already seen before.
I see Vampire shows like True Blood and Vampire Diaries and I don’t tune in because I know great shows like Angel Buffy: The Vampire Slayer have explored the territory way better.
You can dial back the misplaced scorn because it wouldn’t matter which project Mrs. Smith was placed in because she is so irredeemably unlikable in anything.
No need to be mean.
OMG the writing was so bad and it was a miracle this tired 1986 Medical type drama got made. I guess it was just Jada that pushed and got a favor. Can we have MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE back now???
Even the best writers could not save this BORE of a show- Horrible show, and are we to believe that nurses just care more… what a crappy sappy concept- whoever came up with this needs to RETIRE
If you really must know, yes nurses really care. I watch all medical shows as a point of curiosity. The nurses are very true to form in the show. We care too much sometimes. For people that lack a general sense of caring for others, I guess it is a stretch. Most people that are bored, find something else to do!!
That rush of wind you hear isn’t a remnant of hurricane Irene, It’s Michael Vartan breathing a huge sigh of relief! Oh, if only people could really understand how bat-shit crazy the Smiths were on this show. The “making of” would have been the best television ever made –
Details please.
I wish Michael Vartan would find a good show to star in! I’m a fan of Jada, too, but I suspect she needs to stick with acting and leave the writing, etc to others.
I second the call for details
tellmehowthatgoes, It was Michael Vartan’s “choice” to be on that show, “he” said he chose it out of all the other scripts that he’d gotten, because ‘he’ saw something different from what he was being offered elsewhere.
I personally DO NOT BLAME him for the choice that he made, because I also believe the show showed some promise in the two seasons that I mentioned, but it seems as if the Writers were having a block and started taking the storylines in places they didn’t need to go.
Say whatever you will but as far as I’m concerned, Vartan has some of the ‘BEST’ chemistry (he and Nia Long from ‘Big Shots’ were hot as well, and had garnered many fans from all over the place, even overseas who were sad as well when ‘Big Shots’ ended) I’ve seen on screen, and I (we) thought that he and Jada did too.
I hope and pray to see him back on t.v. again real soon, and that this time his stint will be even “longer”.
I hope, with every fiber if my being, that James Robert Kirk is right about TNT trying to bring back Law & Order. That show got so shafted when it was cancelled. After 20 years, they deserved a proper finale. But moreso, they deserved at least one more season to break Gunsmoke’s record for longest running series.
This is why I got away from network tv. To take a great show like this off especially with such great cliffhangers is really not good. I am so tired that these decisions are being made without any thought to the audience. Netflix I guess I will be adding more DVD’s to my membership. Memphis Beat goes TNT I go.
TNT’s shows are all very bland and vanilla. Maybe it appeals to southern folk, but not me.
Amen!!
I am Southern, white but not really bland. I love most TNT shows.
Roger C, Praise the Lord for freedom of choice. What’s bland to some is in most cases much enjoyment for others. Good for you Brenda (even though I’m not white) but sadly for me now that ‘HawthoRNe’ is gone, I’m getting a not so good feeling about ‘Memphis Beat’, and hope that I’m way off with this.
I’m so sick and tired of the ‘Realty Show Craze’ that I could literally scream my head off, because rather than put on quality shows, we get crap and more crap such as: ‘Jersey Shore, ‘Keeping up the Kardashians’, etc. Why pay real actors/actresses with real acting chops, when you can throw money at people with NO talent and filthy language who get to show the rest of the world what nonsense comes out of our country??? I thank God for ‘Antenna TV’ turning back the clock and a few other networks. Pray for ‘Memphis Beat’ y’all because now that ‘HawthoRNe’ is gone, they’ll have work that much harder (by t.v. executive standards) to keep those ratings afloat. Good luck y’all.
No surprise, really. An uninspired medical procedural? Hell, the broadcast nets are filled with them (and more are coming this fall). Why would cable channels need to add to this uncreative mix?
I was a fan of the show but this season the characters went in a completley different direction and ruined the show. Hawthorne use to be this hard working nurse whose high values help her in her job and raising her daugther. This season she became a cheating wife with no morals. Who in the hell going to believe a hospital would hire a nurse who just been fired to head up a major hospital, give me a break! I’m glad its cancel.
I completely agree wih Former Fan. The first 2 seasons of Hawthorne were good. The characters had a lot of potential, and it was not a hospital drama about everyone sleeping around. I just wonder if they fired the writers from the first 2 seasons and replaced them with the horrible writers for the 3 season. Every character did a 180 degree turn and they were all in the wrong direction. The entire season was horrible; so horrible infact that I stopped watching after the 3rd episode. It needed to be cancelled. It was too horrible to watch.
A neighbor just started watching this show, at the last episode. He loves it. So I suggested he watch the very first episode and then tell me if he agrees there was a severe case of infectious mental illness that struck the writers from season 1to season 3. No surprise that he is thinking, maybe….
Maybe it is just me, and of course everyone has their opinion, but I thought the show became awful. I loved it the first two seasons. I especially loved Michael Vartan. I just had to quit watching this year. I couldn’t take it anymore. The writing and storyline just became ridiculous. Again only my opinion, but not surprised at all by this. I just started to completely dislike Jada’s character. It has to be a bad sign for any show when your leading star is so unlikeable!
I agree completely. Liked the 1st 2 seasons, but stopped watching after about 4 eps this season. It was atrocious storyines, with characters changing completely from the 1st 2 seasons. Vartan’s character became vanilla and sideline, and Jada’s became depressing, annoying, ridiculous and boring. Mark Anthony was just too creepy.
Amy, it’s not just you. I agree, the storyline just went complete off the rails. Trying to force Marc Anthony’s character into the show, when the previous two seasons didn’t set things up that way, didn’t work at all – and he came across as just plain creepy. Jada’s character was nuts, completely unlikeable and unreasonable and not in a post-traumatic stress kind of way. Then there’s the hospital that fires an employee for getting injured in an assault on property – apparently medical leave is an unheard of concept for these people. The show just needed to go away, it was too far gone to reset.
I guess since you don’t like the show it should just go away. Some of us happened to like the show very much its called entertainment sometimes things don’t make sense. My theory if you didn’t like it you should have stopped watching it.
I liked the first season of HawthoRNe; but then the show simply got too dark and heavy. TNT should hang on to the lighter Memphis Beat.
Love Memphis Beat…….Wish this was not Closer’s last year….Hawthorne was blah, blah……
The series too a real stupid turn plotline wise this season. I mean she marries a guy in episode 1 breaks up with him in episode 2 then sleeping with another man lol. Sounds like another soap bit the dust.
Long overdue cancellation. Jada is just irritatingly grating. Couldn’t even watch the promos.
As for Memphis Beat-it’s one of the best & worthy of renewal!
If Jennifer Aniston had the lead role you would have gave it 5 stars. Don’t hate the Smiths because they are paid!
Michael Vartan should hook up with Jennifer Garner and be on 2.5 Men…that’s the next grand step….
Glad this show was cancelled..Horrible show, big waste of money..
Now Jada can be a housewife and take care of her kids and make cookies with Jlo and Marc……
kat,
Michael Vartan and Jennifer Garner hook up, Ahh, NO, then again if they do decide to do so, it will MOST DEFINITELY be for another ‘Alias’ movie and that will probably be all.
I was really looking forward to the next season since Nurse Hawthorne had decided to run the hospital again, but like the rest of the TNT shows, just because they have one bad season, it is automatically cancelled. Nice going – again.
I agree with Bobbi. The show was good overall. TNT could at least have let Hawthorne have a farewell episode. This was the only show I really enjoyed watching on tv. I did not particularly enjoy watching Hawthorne commit adultery, but they could have let her redeem herself.
Bobbi and Nett, I say the same but in Season 2 when Christina announced that she was pregnant I could actually feel that a pall fall over the show after that (especially when it comes to ‘interracial’ couples sadly).
I don’t know if Jada has too much on her plate and was writing in her sleep, she and the other Writers had a block and couldn’t get back on track, or they just felt lead to do something they ‘thought’ would up the ante for the show. Whatever it was proved to be the ending of the show for good, but as you’ve said here why not just let it finish out on a good note instead and one that wouldn’t make TNT look so bad??
By the way, I realize everyone from the cast has moved on already, but it sure would be nice if Jada (and maybe the other Writers as well) would address exactly why the writing style changed so drastically (and got so awful to boot)??? Then again, I’m not sure if she’ll ever be willing to do this.
Yup, agree with what most of you guys said. Loved the first two seasons, but after this last season, it was just too much with the storylines. I missed most of the last season & didn’t really care too much after that.
Completely agree with the last few posters. The first season had freshness (with the male nurse/female doctor affair) and the right mix of character and procedure with more than decent writing. This season was overly dramatic dreck. Practically every character was unlikable. I’ve heard that Will would fly in to the set and he and Jada would re-write the scripts themselves, which is probably never a great sign for the health of a show.
Thank GOD! That show is a poorly contrived mess. Now Showtime just needs to cancel Weeds. Its long past its time.
Hey! What about the show with Zachary Morris! Tango and Rash! Cancel that show too. JPS is a passionate, intense actor! I hope Hawthorne Blvd. finds a home at Lifetime.
Just like THE GAME all the negative comments and guess what BET picked up the show and they had 7.7 million viewers when they aired in Jan 2011. Just because you people don’t like it doesn’t mean that other people don’t. Hopefully, it will get picked up by another station like THE GAME which will be back in 2012 for another season. Jada and Will keep it moving yall have alot of HATERS out there!
agreed. I couldn’t wait to see THE GAME and was one of those millions of viewers when it re appeared. Hawthorne was not a purely medical show and if you hate Jada, what about the other co stars? Really, more to the show than a hospital. Hope BET takes this one too, then I’ll have another good show to watch.
