Comedy’s white-hot selling season continues with another half-hour project sparking a big bidding war. Titled On The Verge of Greatness, the single-camera twentysomething ensemble comedy hails from 3 Arts and 20th Century Fox TV. It will be written/executive produced by feature writer Tom Gormican, with Jake Kasdan on board to direct and executive produce through his overall deal at 20th TV. Also executive producing are 3 Arts’ Howard Klein and Oly Obst. 20th TV pitched the comedy to the Big 4 broadcast networks yesterday. Three of them — ABC, NBC and CBS — bought it in the room and are now in a bidding war. Gornican’s script Are We Officially Dating? landed on the 2010 Black List. He has romantic comedy Save the Date in the works at Sony with Neal Moritz producing and is co-producing Relativity’s upcoming Farrelly brothers movie. Kasdan recently directed the pilot for Fox’s upcoming comedy New Girl.

Every network is trying find this generation’s single camera “Friends” huh? Just like last year.. and the year before… Anybody have a logline? If 3 out of 4 bought in the room it’s gotta be something cool ey?
Tom, if you put this talent/passion into a solid gym regimen I would be impressed. Until then, keep writing/producing/creating bidding wars…
I would say Gormican and Kasdan are on the map. I’m very happy for them. It’s a writer and director’s dream to have a bidding war. I hope it produces a GREAT comedy for us all to watch!
Not only is Gormican is a great writer but he is also very involved with animal rights and dog shelters.
Oh, well, if he’s involved with animal rights and dog shelters GIVE him a deal, NOW! Why didn’t you say so before… How about human rights for a change Hollywood?
Anyway, what’s the show about? Twenty-somethings on the verge… of WHAT?
Wow, you hate Tom Gormican AND puppies? These comment boards are harsh.
More sizzle than steak, mostly because of 3 Arts. They do this every year and wind up with SINGLES.
Before the networks put this on the air, they should see NBC’s “Friends With Benefits” that they just finished burning off last week. Written by the hot feature writers of “500 Days of Summer,” Neustadter & Weber, the show was a total bomb, and those creators didn’t even continue with the show.
Feature writers are moving into TV because they think it’s fun and easy. But so often they implode because it’s tougher than it seems. Good luck to Jake and Tom.
While I completely agree with your comment, I must point out that 20th Century Fox, the same studio that brought us the utterly unfunny and amateurish “Friends With Benefits”, is also the studio behind this project. Wouldn’t you think they’d learn their lesson?
SNORE
Good news for Jake given that HBO is passing on Spring/Fall which he directed
We all know that everything Gormican touches turns to Gold!
