EXCLUSIVE: Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, here for today’s world premiere of his latest film The Intruders, is Summit Entertainment’s choice to direct Highlander. That is the reboot of the 1986 film about immortals who battle with swords, and live and die by the mantra that “there can be only one.” Fresnadillo is now in discussions to direct a film that Summit will co-finance with RCR Media Group. Fresnadillo is also attached to direct a reboot of The Crow, which has Bradley Cooper attached.
This is a coveted job that became an open directing slot when Justin Lin dropped out to make the sixth installment of The Fast and the Furious.
Fresnadillo, who first attracted Hollywood’s attention with the genre film Intacto, followed with the superb 28 Weeks Later. Today he unveils Intruders, an intense psychological drama that stars Clive Owen as a father who cannot protect his young daughter from faceless intruders. The film also stars Daniel Bruhl, who starred Inglourious Basterds and next stars as Formula One racer Niki Lauda in the Ron Howard-directed Rush. The film is an acquisition title that is high on many buyers’ lists, and the director’s UTA reps are selling it.
The original Highlander starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, and there have been numerous sequels that were not good, and a successful syndicated TV series that starred Adrian Paul and was very good. The movie has gone back to the original film’s mythology, with a script by the Iron Man team of Art Marcum and Matt Holloway that people like. I heard it got a polish from Twilight Saga scribe Melissa Rosenberg. Neal Moritz and Peter Davis are producing.

“There can be only one” good HIGHLANDER film…the original. This remake is unnecessary. It won’t make a dime. The franchise is played-out.
Clive Owen as Connor. That could work.
Not that this film needs to be remade. There can be only disappointment.
Shia LaBeouf, Penn Badgley or Chace Crawford as Connor MacLeod
Mischa Barton or Blake Lively as Brenda Wyatt
Mark Strong or Rhys Ifans as The Kurgan
Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy or David Tennant as Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez
I hope in this new Highlander film series, they will include:
Duncan MacLeod, Amanda, General Katana, Louise Marcus, Dr. Alexandra Johnson/Sarah Barrington, Kane, Nakano, Jacob Kell, Heather MacLeod, Rachel Ellenstein, Tessa Noël, Darius, Hugh Fitzcairn, Charlie DeSalvo, Maurice Lalonde, Anne Lindsey, Richie Ryan, Joe Dawson, Methos, Nick Wolfe
I love it when scripts written by talented people get “polishes” from less talented people.
I read last week that Mark Bomback will be “polishing” Christopher McQuarrie’s script for THE WOLVERINE. Sure, because the writer of THE USUAL SUSPECTS needs to be edited by the guy who wrote RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN.
It’s ripe for a remake.
As long as they keep the story consistent with the number of Immortals, ignore the planet Zeist storyline and don’t make unnecessary sequels to needlessly expand the Highlander universe.
Basically I’m gonna get in early on the “There can be only Juan” bandwagon.
It will come down to the script. If the script is good, then it is a chance of being good. There have been rare, very rare, cases of a remake/reboot being good. I’m will to wait and see.
Haven’t they rebooted this a few times? I seem to remember some really awful TV show….
Really awful TV show? Look, I like the original movie itself, however I’ve always thought that the show was far better than the movies. Adrian Paul was/is a better actor than Christopher Lambert, and I felt the show did more for the legacy of Highlander itself than anything else.
I respectfully disagree. Christoph Guy Denis Lambert is a better (and more accomplished) actor than Adrian Paul, but that is hardly a contest between the most respected actors in the world. Having written that, I was happy with each as a Highlander.
The television show definitely grew the Highlander brand (and brought many women into the audience), but the original film generated such the intense fanbase that keeps (I assume) this kind of project viable.
I would prefer an actual Scotsman (or even an Irishman) be cast to play the role of Connor MacLeod (assuming that the characters are kept in tact).
Eh, maybe it’s just personal preference, but while I enjoyed Lambert in Highlander, I have always felt that Adrian Paul had more range. He could easily go from camp to comedy to a darkness of his character that I felt was quite good. He could sing and dance which was also nice to see.
He also really looked the part of a warrior. He’s an accomplished martial artist, and I’ve heard that the swordmaster and fight choreographer who worked with him the entire series has said that he’s never before or since worked with anyone who soaked up everything he taught them.
Though were hardly talked about the most respected thespians in the acting world here, both are better actors than they are given credit for.
I hope and pray THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN!
I know the original Highlander is considered a classic, by some, but Lambert is a poor actor, and most definitely NOT Scottish, while Sean Connery, who IS Scottish plays a Spaniard??? And it never really made complete sense to me. What exactly was the reason to become :the only one”? So you wouldn’t be immortal anymore? So the prize for killing everyone else is the ability to die, which would have happened if you’d lost, anyway? Seems a little stupid, to me.
Not everything was really made clear, but yes, the ability to live a normal life which included growing old was one of the gifts. It would be like Dracula not needing or feeling the urge to drink blood and dying of old age. Trust me, after living hundreds or thousands of years, it would be a sweet relief. It’s not like he won and keeled over a couple of minutes later. Big difference between that and getting your head chopped off.
The other prize was unbelievable knowledge. The ability to use what life you had left to help the world and those around you. When you think about it though, it makes sense. What could the “prize” have been really? Knowledge and the ability to live and die a normal person is probably the best things really for an immortal.
DAMMIT HOLLYWOOD WILL YOU STOP IT WITH THE REMAKES!!!!!!
I am telling you….They will drag Burt Reynolds and Stroker Ace out next….you watch….
Although I am a huge Highlander fan I don’t know where this can go. In end game Duncan and his “wife” were the only immortals left. They could try to go from there which isn’t likely, or they re-tell the story from a different perspective. Unfortunately they will probably change everything that fans love about the story in the hopes of bringing in a younger fan base with all the new special effects available.
