Earlier today, we scooped that director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, in Toronto for the premiere of his latest movie The Intruders, was the front-runner to helm Summit Entertainment’s re-imagining of Highlander, the 1986 fantasy sci-fi film starring Christopher Lambert about immortals who battle with swords, and live and die by the mantra that “there can be only one.” Well, the distributor just confirmed that Fresnadillo is the only one to direct it:
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will direct Summit Entertainment’s re-imagination of the cult film HIGHLANDER co-financed by RCR Media Group. Summit’s HIGHLANDER is written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Neal H. Mortiz and Peter Davis will produce the project along with Enrique López Lavigne and Belen Atienza. RCR Media Group’s principles Rui Costa Reis and Eliad Josephson will executive produce the film. Justin Lin will also executive produce. Summit acquired the rights to remake the cult classic from Davis – Panzer Productions, Inc. in May of 2008. Production on the film is slated to begin spring of 2012.
In HIGHLANDER, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman must confront the last of his kind, a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for the Prize.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed 28 WEEKS LATER as well as INTRUDERS, which is premiering at the Toronto Film Festival. His other credits include the Spanish language INTACTO and Oscar® nominated short LINKED.
Fresnadillo is represented by UTA.

Congratulations to Apaches Entertainment! I actually sent Belén Atienza my CV on Sunday. With this new project, maybe they will consider having a new intern (wink, wink).
There can be only two.
missing the great Bill Panzer.
Dear Hollywood,
Stop remaking classics because they all turn to shit!
Sincerely,
Everyone
Dear Everyone,
If you stop making remakes profitable for us, we’ll stop producing them.
Sincerely,
Hollywood
Another remake – time for a parade.
It’s 25 years later, folks…will be closer to 30 by the time this thing’s released — I’d give this “reimagining” my blessing and it deserves a little bit of a chance, vs. much of the other stuff studios are “revisiting” out of need or greed… ‘Highlander’ is a franchise that’s actually deserving of a proper redo. Let’s see what they have up their sleeves — can it really be worse than ‘The Source’?
Meantime, I think studios and filmmakers would actually save themselves a lot of unneeded stress if they simply took out any descriptive wordings in their press releases referring to “reboot” “reimagining” “revisit” etc. etc. How about just “Summit Entertainment has set Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct ‘HIGHLANDER’ for the studio. Filming is slated to begin in Spring 2012.”
There, see? Doesn’t that sound simpler and more attractive?
This is going to be bad! These young people need to bring something NEW to film and not destroy what has already been done to suit their taste. It’s insulting and shows lack of talent on their part.
Four generally lousy sequels didn’t “destroy” the original Highlander (unless someone burned the negatives in the process), so I doubt a remake will either. Nothing could possibly sink lower than “The Quickening”,or especially “The Source”.
If they are going to reboot Highlander, why not avoid the mistake the orginal made….like having the last battle between the last two immortals. I mean…if you want to really wring the last nickle from Highlander mythology you need to leave opportunities for sequals without destroy the idea the movie is based on.
Or you could shake the premise of the Immortals up and focus on a whole new immortal not one that has already been used and NOT HAVE THE LAST TWO IMMORTALS BATTLING IT OUT. Just a thought to keep future profits rolling in. Plus it would benefit from being slight more original.
this could be epic if done right with the right actors and add in some of the inmortals from the tv show and change a few things like have conner teach duncan and just have Ramirez show up couse he was hunting the kurgan and just ran in two those two becouse the kurgan was hunting them and never explain the prize pull in the four horseman into as well as the watchers and a few others like a Amanda and do something shocking have conner die and out steps duncan and challages the kurgan who is all ready tried but love the fight but never have the story were there is only a few left. the end battle show couse something that starts the gathering and for the love of god do not have the kurgan have daddy issues he just a warrior with a thrill to fight and is very evil and dont give two shits what he has to do he does bottom line
plus they should use cain from the third one as well change it a bit but have one huge fight with the kurgan in the middle of the movie just to gave more to the kurgan as the one true badass like i said with the right actors this could be epic hell they could even have a flash back were the kurgan was helping with the slave ship and throw luther into and show how cruel the kurgan can be and then have another huge fight with him and Rebecca Horne and have some way she gets away.also add some with kronos and Howard Crowley in the old west involing duncan this movie played right could realy jump start the whole thing for movies put they have to stay away from the second movie the source and that demon and never say there only two left keep it going they have alot of realy good inmortals to work with and they dont even need to kill the kurgan the frist time leave it and buit it he is the bad guy the most powerfull of all of them they could make a trilogy and at the end of the last one then kill him but fleash it out over the frist two and then the last one throw a r rate on it and go balls out
