• This has been seen hundreds of times before. As a piece of math, it’s one of many similar experiments done at the same time around the world. As a piece of art or film, it barely rates a blip.

  As a PR piece to garner special Academy consideration for Catmull, the timing of it’s re-release makes sense.

  • The level of sophistication required to create something like this in 1972 is extraordinary and is far more than an artistic blip. There experimenting with the technology, but Catmull was the only one pushing it’s capabilities with an eye toward using it in a story telling medium. This was a boundary pushing seven minutes or so and is an important piece of art and “film”.

    And incidentally it has been online and available for 10 months, so I don’t think it has been timed to awards season.
