EXCLUSIVE: ABC is bringing Ellen DeGeneres and Alex Herschlag back into the fold, outbidding NBC for a single-camera comedy project written by former Ellen writer Herschlag and executive produced by the star of the 1990s ABC comedy. The project, from Warner Bros TV and DeGeneres’ studio-based production company A Very Good Production, has received a script commitment plus penalty. Titled Weitz & Wong, it is a multi-generational family comedy about a mixed race Jewish-Chinese couple and their two children trying to create their own identity in the face of their very different extended families. The premise is inspired by the real-life experiences of Herschlag’s brother. Herschlag, DeGeneres and A Very Good
Production president Lauren Corrao are executive producing. This marks the second major sale this season for ICM-repped A Very Good Production. Last month, an adult sibling comedy starring Portia de Rossi sparked a 4-way bidding war, ultimately landing at NBC with a put pilot commitment. Herschlag and DeGeneres have a long history together. Ellen was the first TV series Herschlag worked on. He has written material for DeGeneres’ standup as well as for her Oscar, Emmy and Grammy hosting stints. Herschlag, repped by the Rothman Brecher Agency, also served as executive producer/co-showurunner on Will & Grace and recently worked as a consulting producer on Modern Family and Hot In Cleveland.

How many premium comedy script deals is ABC going to make? I guess they’re definitely going for a TGIF comedy line-up on Fridays, cause it doesn’t seem like they have many time slots open.
I GOT A FEELING THAT ELLEN’S NEW SHOW WILL BE POPPING ON ABC FAMILY NEXT YEAR. GOOD LUCK TO ALEX HERSCHLAG/ELLEN’S NEW COMEDY SHOW. IT IS RARE TO SEE A GOOD COMEDY SHOW WITHOUT THE DAMMED LAUGH SOUND. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Has there ever been such in-depth reporting of pilots before this season? How is that affecting the industry and the buys?
Is it possible all the celebrity-driven pilots are being purchased just so networks can show off who they’re in business with? It seems you hardly EVER hear of unknown writer/producers, or even known ones, who aren’t “sexy” to the industry, selling a pilot this season.
When a celebrity or production company that’s associated with a celebrity, sells a pilot this season, said celebrity’s face is splattered across this website and subsequently other websites, from ZAP2IT and other TV Blogs to mainstream media (gross term but whatever, Palin ruined the phrase, not me), etc. and it feels like the only reason the network bought the pilot was for that very reason. Very superficial, shallow, vain, and unnerving.
I wonder what the ratio of pilots with talent is to pilots with quality or up-and-coming writers/producers. Is the pitch even necessary anymore, as long as a sexy name comes with it?
Judging from Deadline’s reporting the past month or two, it appears pilot buys are becoming vain, superficial “look who I got” type of situations rather than the nets going after quality. I’m sure this has always been the case to some extent, but it seems more than ever this season.
Amen. Well put.
Terrible title.
I’d like to get a job where I could get paid to come up with dumb-ass ideas.
Talk about brand/title confusion. I can hear it now, “Did you see that new show that Ellen’s producing on ABC? Not yet, what’s it called?, Cheech and Chong., Are you sure?, Yeap.”
This sounds like it’ll be big in Beverly Hills, and not really anywhere else.
Ha! What a wookie.
