EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation between ABC and NBC, the two networks that carried Bill Lawrence’s comedy Scrubs, ABC has nabbed a new half-hour project from Lawrence and Canadian writer Jason Belleville with a script commitment plus penalty. Belleville will write the multi-camera project about a small-town volunteer fire department. Belleville, Lawrence and Jeff Ingold are executive producing, with Warner Bros TV and Lawrence’s studio-based Doozer banner producing.
This marks the first U.S. gig for Belleville, who has dual American/Canadian citizenship. In Canada, he most recently co-created, executive produced and ran the single-camera comedy series Almost Heroes and previously worked on hit Little Mosque On The Prairie and Testees, which was licensed in the U.S. by FX. This past summer, UTA-repped Belleville came to Los Angeles for a series of meetings and sat down with Lawrence and his development executive Ingold. The three hit it off and proceeded to developed the idea for the workplace comedy. This is Lawrence’s third sale in the first development season under his rich new deal at WBTV. He previously landed pilot production commitments at Fox, for a father-son single-camera comedy which Lawrence will write, direct and executive produce; and at CBS, for a multi-camera workplace comedy that Lawrence is co-writing/executive producing with Greg Malins. In addition to developing, ICM-repped Lawrence also continues as executive producer/showrunner on his ABC comedy series Cougar Town.

Woah! This one and the one they got from the Modern Family crew puts ABC on roll comedy wise. Now they desperately need a few more Castles or Body Of Proof type programs to replace those played out soaps nobody wants to see. I can’t believe those idiots passed on Angela Basset’s, Identity. That would have been a sure hit closer for their Wednesday night lineup.
Revenge is a great show.
Jason Belleville is one of Canada’s most talented showrunners and TV writers. Congrats fella! It is great to see this happen and with such solid team.
Kevin Biegel!
Go Jason! A funny guy …and authentic guy. Looking forward to this new show ABC!
With all this activity it sounds like Bill knows “Cougar Town” is a horrific turd on borrowed time.
Stop hiring the horrifically unfunny Bill Lawrence – responsible for terrible shows like “Scrubs” and “Cougar Town”. I don’t know how he keeps getting work as a comedy writer – it certainly isn’t due to a track record of ratings success.
what happened, did bill pass on your unfunny spec? you can question a lot of things but his ratings success is not one of them. spin city, 5 years. scrubs, 8 years. cougar town, 3+ and counting. most writers spend their careers hoping to put one hit on the air.
Because his shows are brilliant! Scrubs is one of the best shows ever and Cougar Town is fantastic!
Should be interesting to see how this plays out.
Does Lawerence’s new deals do anything to or for ABC’s Cougar Town?
