ABC has bought comedy No. One Son from writer Cindy Caponera (Shameless, Saturday Night Live), Lisa Ling and DreamWorks TV. ABC Studios is producing. The single-camera show is about two completely culturally different families, one Chinese and the other Irish/Italian, that have to learn to co-exist because they are now related through the new marriage of their oldest children. Caponera is executive producing with Ling and DreamWorks TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. This is the second comedy sale to ABC for DreamWorks TV, which also has Tracy McMillan’s single-camera comedy Why You’re Not Married set up there with a script commitment plus penalty.

Would like to point out to ABC that “Chinese,” “Irish,” and “Italian” are not races. They are nationalities.
Sounds like my family, except my family is probably more drama than comedy. Very interested in this project though.
THANK YOU LISA LING!
Is Justin Falvey related to Samie Falvey?
Yes, Samie “Kim” is his wife.
yes by marriage
by the time the morons in creative get through with their notes: each week will include an argument over who invented the spaghetti noodle.
Great that there will be an Asian family at the center of a show. Not great at all that Lisa Ling is gonna be heading a comedy project.
C’mon networks, there are plenty of funny Asian people that will do a comedy for you. Lisa Ling is not one of those people.
Sounds like Bridget Loves Bernie from the early 1970s (or maybe late 1960s?)
This sounds like Samie’s life
the ling sisters rule.
surfs up
CINDY CAPONERA!!! Gotta love it when Hollywood gets it right. No one funnier or more insightful on Italian/Irish family than Ms. Caponera.
Any else find her narration on her OWN show completely and utterly unlistenable? Her voice is so forced to sound serious that it hurts to listen to.
Thank you.
No, Chinese is also a race. There are racially Chinese Malaysians, Thai, Indonesians, Singaporeans, etc. It is a legitimate ethnicity.
You are mistaken. There is no spot on the human genome that makes someone “Chinese.”
Thank you. It’s Asains and white people.
Sounds like My Freakin’ Family.
Enter this year’s obligatory mixed-race-family-by-marriage sitcom. Let the retread comedy ensue.
….also, hilarity ensues.
Is this a new trend? Giving network-aligned talent a shot at a show? Between this, the Levine thing, the half-dozen shows ESPN people have had considered…it’s almost as if you need an actor or other celebrity in the production team these days to get a show picked up for development.
I bet the marriage is white guy and chinese girl. This is Lisa Ling’s way of saying it’s okay to do what I do. I don’t think she is a good role model for Asian Americans. In fact I see this show just being a racist show that pokes fun of Asian culture. Great work Lisa!
Actually Lisa Ling is married to an Asian man. But I agree with you they wouldn’t dare to do anything the other way around.
It looks like someone’s been going through Norman Lear’s trash bin.
Is America ready for a “cool” Asian-American, Male? This is like uncharted, taboo, territory for American TV Producers. However, if the goal is to raise social awareness, challenge the middle-class, norms, and offer change to an ever changing American Public, then this could really be a break-through for the show if they choose to go in this direction. However, my bet is that they will have a White Male Lead, a Pretty Asian, Female Lead, a heavily accented set of Asian Parents, and a Nerdy, Asian Brother, a Sassy, Asian, Little Sister, or both.
Anon, you’re absolutely 100% spot-on.
As much as I applaud Asians having ANY role in TV or movies, I’m pretty tired of seeing the same type of roles all the time. What would truly make this show groundbreaking is if it featured a Asian American Male with parents that were competent even if they were traditional.
I’m hoping against hope that they make this show from a truly different mold.
These shows never make it. We are all too in denial about racism to do the comedy right. Also notice this show didn’t get any penalties or commitments as in the trend for star aligned projects this year. Ironically, it’s because LL is Asian.
Nice get a little color on TV! But of course you gotta have white folks as in laws all Asians would’ve been too much for Racist Hollywood TV networks.
This caps a pitch season where network execs bought tons of projects due to celebrity attachments that, other than getting them ink, will do nothing to bring more viewers or substance to the shows.
