EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation, ABC has bought a primetime soap from Oscar-winning writer Callie Khouri and TV producer/documentary filmmaker RJ Cutler with a script commitment plus penalty. Thelma & Louise scribe Khouri will write the project, which is set in Nashville against the backdrop of the country music world. Cutler (The September Issue) is set to direct. The two will executive produce with Nashville-based Gaylord Entertainment, which is being represented by SVP of Media and Entertainment Steve Buchanan. The drama is produced by leading cable producer Lionsgate TV, which is having its most active broadcast development season ever under new head of development Chris Selak. This marks Khouri’s return to ABC where she wrote, directed and executive produced the 2006 pilot Hollis & Rae. Khouri and Cutler are with CAA. There have been a few TV projects set in Nashville over the past couple of years, including Epix’s pilot Tough Trade, which also was produced by Lionsgate TV, and FX’s pilot Outlaw Country, which is in contention for a series pickup.

Like the Cutler part… Khouri not so much.
Khouri is a mystery. She goes on and on with one good credit and nothing but crap since.
Maybe lionsgate stock will tart making me money
Please explain what “plus penalty” means. Penalty for what?
This sounds AMAZING! Callie is great at writing Southern characters and Thelma & Louise is iconic. Can’t wait to watch this show- congrats to all!
Like the Khouri part… the Cutler part not so much. He’s not a director – certainly not if being on budget and on schedule matter. Give him 3 times the schedule and expect an overbudget – it’s still a question if he can direct a scripted show.
Will Hank, Jr star?
this show sounds awesome! love thelma & louise and love callie!
Years ago she was to write a book that ws a prequel to “Thelma & Louise”. I hope she still wants to do it. T & L has to be one of the best films in the past 25 years! Watch it today and the film is just as good and still proves a valid point!
I don’t understand all the hype about Khouri! She had one major success & won an Oscar for it. But has she had a lasting career? Her IMDB is bare to say the least. The mystery is how she can live off one major produced credit for so long?
