Second Time No Charm For ‘Playboy Club’ ‘Charlie’s Angels’ & ‘Prime Suspect’: What Went Wrong?
ABC has put the flailing Charlie’s Angels remake out of its misery. The small ratings uptick last night didn’t save the freshman, which has now been canceled, with production on it shut down. I hear ABC intends to run the episodes that have been already made. Sony TV has shot a total of 8 episodes, including the pilot. Four of them have aired. After a low-rated debut, the Charlie’s Angels reboot dropped precipitously for 2 weeks to a 1.2 ratings in adults 18-49 last Thursday before posting a tiny increase to a 1.3 last night. But that turned out to be too little too late…
Here is a summary on where ABC’s fall series with 13-episode orders stand. Freshmen Suburgatory and Revenge have received Back 9 orders, while Charlie’s Angels has been canceled. Sophomores Happy Endings and Body Of Proof have been given script orders: 6 scripts for Happy Endings and 2 for Body Of Proof.

finally….surprised it lasted this long
Next up, Body of Goof.
So what will go on it’s place? Bring back LOST!!!
Weren’t they found?
That’s really no surprise here, the ratings were absolutely awful.
But first the idea was awful.
The *show* was absolutely awful!
finally….surprised it lasted this long….what a train wreck…..
good riddance. awful show
never watched..i loved the first one..should have had some of the original angels involved, this cast did not look interesting…boy robert wagner looks smart now for not getting involved in this…
Well, it’s not like I didn’t see this coming before the series even started airing, but even so, I’m surprised it took this long for ABC to stop it.
I have a feeling that ABC will ultimately fail to air all the episodes…
“…ABC confirms the timeslot will be filled by a reboot of HART TO HART.”
LOL oyy
Because THAT’S going to do better…
How an A-TEAM remake? Or better yet: SLEDGEHAMMER!!!
Oooh if they’re taking reboot requests, The Scarecrow and Mrs. King, please!
HEY ABC thant was one worthless show, now it FOX NETWORK turn to cancel the worthless X Factor. HEY Simon X Factor SUCKS !
X-Factor really does suck. America can only take so much cheese before puking.
These remakes are consistently failing. I wonder when these dumb studios and producers give up on being thoughtless.
SORRY typing too fast. HEY ABC that was one worthless show. and one more thing HEY Simon X Factor SUCKS !
Hey, Lisa, no matter how many times you try to spell it, youre totally wrong. That show is a hit, and X-Factor is just ONE of the many reasons Charlie’s Angels died out. Not to mention that it totally blew, AND IM A male, heterosexual who enjoyed the first one, becauee it WASNT good-it was a guilty pleasure, with jiggly gals, lite humor, and even lighter police work. This tried to take it self too seriously, and played it as a straight detective drama!
HEY Brutony, Simon said that X Factor would beat American Idol 20million viewers in the rating race. X Factor started with 12million viewers. the following week X Factor show was 11million viewers, and now X Factor has 10million viewers. X Factor is AWFUL show and losing viewers fast. HEY Simon X Factor SUCKS ! and will never beat American Idol
Lisa – why the anger?
I actually really enjoy X factor. They have mixed things up with the judges homes etc. Far more interesting than the same old Format Idol has been churning out for years. Plus the judges are way better than the love fest on Idol.
I hope it does beat out Idol. I’ve made the switch and not going back.
I’m sorry but the X-Factor has none of the polish or interesting stories of American Idol. It is an ill-conceived project that attempts to ride on the coat tails of American Idol. With a host whose voice sounds like he should be doing Hair club for men in Brittan the show goes from bad to worse. The only personality the show has is Simon’s. When Juxtaposed against Paula and Randy the stark comparisons made for great contrast. Here LA has no Personality and Paula is dismissed at every turn. Although American Idol completes it’s journey in a large venue, it’s auditions are held in more intimate venue and makes for much better drama. The show looks like it plays entirely to Simon’s ego which he can barely get inside the venue. Two hours at a time borders on watching paint dry. Make this a half hour outing and it might work but if it was played against Idol, I dare say there would be two ninety year old women in Iowa with their hearing aids turned up yelling to each other: Yea that’s the guy who preaches to Peaches and me every Sunday mornin’ on the TELE. And one gum chewing T’bacca chewing trailer trash woman who thinks Simon has a nice ass.
C’mon America Wake Up. Do you really think half those people are for real? Any A&R guy will tell you at 16 you might have a career in this business, at 20 your a hack and at 40 you an “Oldies” act Some of these folks are Way too Fat, Way too Ugly and Way Way too stupid to ever work in this business. Simon, you should be walking away with your tail between your legs sayin Mia Copa, Mia Copa, Mia Maxima-Copa. Please do us all a solid and shoot this thing before it can multiply. Between the networks they have nothing new to offer. The really scary thing is the best shows have been coming from Cable Channels like USA and TNT. NBC, ABC and CBS… Take a lesson from your sister baby stations, Be creative we’re all tired of seeing Rocky 24 and Transformers 19.
Oy, it’s mea culpa. My fault. Not mia copa, my cup.
Let this be a lesson to the networks — stop insulting people’s intelligence with reboots and remakes.
Unfortunately, the networks will never learn. I am amazed that they pay people six-figure salaries to do such shitty work in running the networks.
Seems like a great gig, they have absolutely no idea what they’re doing, zero talent for creating television yet they still make millions of dollars a year. I can’t blame them but they, along with the writing staffs of some of these shows really should be embarrassed at the horrible jobs they do, prostitutes should have more dignity and self-respect.
All of this is a fine thing to say, but every once in a long while a reboot can work, and sometimes better than the original. Or have we all forgotten “Battlestar Galactica”, where the remake was far superior to the original.
I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT! I hedged my bets til last night, when I saw the foutrh, and in my eyes, the LAST one Id see, and apparently everyone else, too. When they totally dropped the ball on the remake of one of the originals CLASSIC eps-Angels In Chains-AND the special guest star Erica “Lois Lane” Durance-not to mention Elisabeth Pena and James Morrison-and STILL turned out a bland, sexless, groaning episode! That did it for me, cause I figured if they couldnt make that ep worthy, then they couldnt do it to ANY of them. This should be a lesson to those who wanted to fix what aint broken!
That’s what you get when you have a spank-the-monkey-mentality programming your seasons….GET SOME MORE WOMEN IN THE DECIDING MIX…..the best on air are strong women show…ie Harry’s Law and Prime Suspect…and the deliciously evil Revenge.
do you know that prime suspect did worse then charlie’s angels last night? i wouldn’t use that as an example of strong women shows being the answer for programers
Hey Vermont Kid. I’m assuming you’re in Vermont. I’m here in Los Angeles and work at one of the studios. A good percentage, perhaps the majority of creative executives are WOMEN. They’re in the mix. They may not have the final decision in some cases but they’re in the mix more than you imagine.
I think that is the problem, women are generally not funny and are not capable of judging humor, this is why shows like “Whitney” get on the air. Granted most men on network TV are horrible as well, and there are some funny women, but they are few and far between, particularly in the corporate realm. White, corporate female = no sense of humor.
This show had such strong BRANDING, which is all we really need to attract an audience. Why did it fail?
Weak writing was the cause of death.
and acting and directing…..it was a mess from the get-go…as was Playboy Club…..next to go How to be a Gentleman…..pure crap.
Charlie’s Angels just sucked. No mystery. As for the failed Playboy Club and the failing Prime Suspect, they looked like interesting shows. But NBC, you might be surprised to know how many people I talk to who threw up their hands w/ your network during the late night fiasco and have never been back, at least with any semblance of regularity. These are intelligent shows and your intelligent viewers walked a couple years ago. If only you didn’t still employ some of the bad people from back then,or @ least one bad person, maybe your programs would have a chance.
More Angels postmortem: Minka Kelly is gorgeous but can’t act. The other two tried hard, but the problem here was mostly the scripts. Casting didn’t help.
Well thank goodness! The original was bad enough!
This “Charlie’s Angels” had to compete against the legacy of the original show’s cast (i.e. Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, Jacklyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, etc.).
Might have worked as a one-shot TV movie, but not as a weekly series.
Blown opportunity; series re boot was handed to the wrong guys. This show was sexless, humorless and fun-less. And the costume designer should be drawn and quartered; never have three such spectacularly beautiful women been made to look so tragically mundane.
Reboots can be done effectively – see Hawaii 5-0 – but they have to be created by people who can make something old seem new again. This show was cornier than the original and refused to take advantage of 21st century opportunities that the brand offered.
Now excuse me while I go and console Minka Kelly…
While you console her, offer yourself to buy her a personality as well. After all, we can thank Derek Jeter for this Mink situation happening on TV – before him, she was nothing. Whoever thought this girl could lead a series is braindamaged.
Nobody will miss this piece of turd! DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD! NUMFAR, DO THE DANCE OF JOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you know a show is destined to fail when the Guest Stars are more compelling than the leads — well I loved Rachael Taylor and the black girl but Minka Kelly was unwatchable and I love me some Victor Garber but his voice put me to sleep.
Confused feelings to not see Minka Kelly again. ABC got rid of the hottest tv actress but also the worst one.
BRANDING. BRANDING. BRANDING.
SUCKS.
Somewhere Arron Spelling is smiling…
You are one son of a bitch for saying that shit. You have no right speaking for Aaron Spelling. You have no idea if he wanted this show to succeed or not.
Settle down, there, Ralphie-boy.
The big reason I never checked this show out was the bland, bland, bland actresses. No acting skills, no charisma, no personality. Geez, even when they tried to hype them up at the Emmys, they were as plain as vanilla wafers. Good riddance, Angels.
So you’ve never checked out the show, but you know the actors are bland?
The reason Charlie’s Angels sucked was because of Drew Barrymore. This is one untalented woman! The Angels movies were bad also. She has limited range as an actress and absolutely no comprehension as to what “works” as a producer.
