Sean Penn will direct The Comedian, a film that will star Robert De Niro and Kristen Wiig. FilmNation will sell international territories at next week’s AFM. Production is expected to begin next spring. The script was written by Art Linson and Jeffrey Ross, and Linson will produce with John Linson, Jon Kilik and DeNiro.

De Niro will play Jackie Burke, a raging comic past his prime who clings to any recognition that comes from his days as a beloved TV character as he tries to reignite his stagnant career. Sentenced to community service for hitting a heckler in the head with a microphone, the comic meets Harmony, a dazzling and defiant redhead who turns his life sideways. De Niro, of course, starred in The King of Comedy. Wiig is coming off the summer hit Bridesmaids, which she co-wrote. CAA is shopping domestic rights.

Ya gotta be shittin’ me.
All this is is a “Mickey Rourke/The Wrestler” re-hashed with a different occupation.
And, no conservative family will ever pay to see a Sean Penn flick.
No, thank you.
Yes, because it’s just awful how much of his time he’s spent living in Haiti and helping people who were devastated by an earthquake. Of course, that was after he committed those horrible acts of rescuing people stranded during hurricane Katrina. And, yes…he has written pieces critical of US policy, and visited and spoken with leaders with whom our government disagrees – apparently anther “anti-American” crime. Those are all horrible, awful, liberal traits he exhibited, and in no way should any conservative family endorse them, or see any of his films. I wish the conservative families you reference would really, literally, live under rocks, and never come out, instead of just doing so figuratively.
The right don’t need a reason NOT to see this movie. They don’t need a reason to see any movie. And I read this script, it has nothing whatsoever in common w/ the Wrestler.
Turns out not everything is made for “conservative audiences.”
Welcome to the world.
This film, if it’s good (haven’t read the script) won’t need narrow minded “conservative families” to make it a success. There are plenty of people who like good movies, whoever directs them, to go around.
Riiiiiiiight…

Really like this one. Jeff Ross is a funny dude.
The King of Comedy is a masterpiece. Excited to hear about this move from De Niro.
Mr. B… yo are so correct… THE KING OF COMEDY was a beast.. so underrated
Heh, sounds like DeNiro’s doing the Pee-wee Herman story the way it needs to be done. Will it be X rated?
Finally. A movie I will actually see.
With Jeff Ross involved, this movie is guaranteed to be annoying and hacky.
My comment to the comment above ahem
Mickey Rouke The Wrestler re-hashed? I don’t think so. Yes the storyline is nothing new. Career comebacks, meets a muse, special lady, falls in love whatever. It’s how the story is told it’s not always so obvious based on a simple plot line. That film was more about Mickey Rourke’s comeback by default. Deniro doesnt need a comeback he’s back and always constant. It’s just another interesting choice for one of our greatest living actors. AND the conservative comment isn’t relevant. All parties all people will see a film with their favorite actors. People suspend their beliefs and judgements to watch a good film with big names.
So excited aout this project.
By the way “The King of COmedy” is so underrated and one of Deniro’s best performances.
Mr Telethon too …notta fan but gotta give it up to him here.
Sean Penn is an awesome director
The Crossing Guard,Indian Runner, The Pledge, Into The Wild – all solid films. I thought Nicholson was pretty fantastic in Crossing Guard and the Pledge especially.
De Niro was pretty badass in The King of Comedy. Looking forward to this one.
And seriously, enough with the “Conservatives won’t go see a Sean Penn or a Tim Robbins movie or listen to the Dixie Chicks”
It’s not 2004. I think we’ve moved past that.
Now if they can only get an actress instead of Kristen Wiig.
because when you think “world of comedy’ you think Sean Penn!
ever see FAST TIMES…
This will only work if DeNiro’s character’s big comeback appearance is performing a stand-up set at the Cataline Wine Mixer. Pow!
If Hollywood worried about what “conservative families” will pay to see, NOTHING WOULD EVER GET MADE!! Personally, I’d much rather see this story than some has-been trying to revive his less than stellar career. At lest w/DeNiro and Whig, we’ll get something interesting.
Sean Penn is an awesome director. Robert DeNiro perhaps (was) the greatest actor of our (my) generation before he started doling ‘em out for anyone with the bucks to pay him. Positively nothing to do with politics (who give a flying f*ck about conservatives?!?!) or even the foregoing, but: did anyone not see their remake of We’re No Angels? And Art Linson co-wrote it – clearly his track record as a dramatic producer qualifies him as funny. This has B O M B written all over it -
This sounds suspiciously like the same-titled episode of “Playhouse 90,” with another Mickey (Rooney) starring, written by Rod Serling and Ernest Lehman. And Billy Crystal already pillaged it for MR. SATURDAY NIGHT. But given the talent involved (save Wiig–aren’t her 15 minutes up yet?), it still should be pretty good.
This actually sounds similar to “The Great Buck Howard” which starred John Malkovich. Sean Penn’s attachment means I won’t see this film regardless of how it is reviewed. His ignorance and lack of civility have turned me off completely. I do not want to support a louse who gives aid and comfort to dictators while saying that the Tea Party movement was the “Get the N-word out of the White House Party.”
Its amazing that he isn’t paying a greater price for such comments while ABC removed Hank Williams Jr.’s opening for Monday Night Football for far less egregious comments.

It is so pathetic to see “conservatives” who decide what art forms they will allow themselves to appreciate based on an artist’s politics. So incredibly lame. I am a proud liberal (you know, like I’m into science and stuff, LOL), and I do not reject artists based on their politics or personal lives. I finally watched Apocalypto, and loved it, despite my antipathy for Mel Gibson. Have been watching Boss, despite my disagreement with Kelsey Grammer’s politics (and his general personal nuttiness).
I just do not understand close-mindedness.
It is going to be so meta.
