EXCLUSIVE: Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to star in Black Sands, an action film that will be directed by Scott Waugh and Mike McCoy. Financed by Bill Block’s QED, the film will begin production April 1, 2012. In the script that Skip Woods has rewritten, Schwarzenegger will play a loner who wages war against a ruthless weapons manufacturer and his private army in the Southwest. The tone is Man On Fire meets High Plains Drifter. Block will be selling worldwide territories starting today.
Woods scripted A Good Day To Die Hard, which Fox is readying for production. Waugh and McCoy most recently directed Act Of Valor, an action adventure that features actual Navy SEALs. That film was acquired at an auction for distribution by Relativity Media, which paid a $13 million minimum guarantee and a $30 million P&A commitment, and scheduled the film for release on February 17, which is President’s Day Weekend.
Al Ruddy will produce Black Sands with Block and Paul Hanson. Waugh, McCoy and Max Leitman are the executive producers through their Bandito Brothers banner. Sergio Altieri and Kevin Elders wrote early drafts of the script that Woods is rewriting. scSchwarzenegger has squarely returned to his action wheelhouse since returning to acting after ending his run as California governor. He’s shooting the Kim Jee-woon-directed The Last Stand for Lionsgate, after completing The Expendables 2.
QED just completed I, Alex Cross, the Rob Cohen-directed thriller based on the James Patterson novel, with Tyler Perry playing Cross and Matthew Fox his nemesis. QED is also producing the Neil Blomkamp-directed Elysium, which stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. That film is currently shooting. QED and Schwarzenegger hooked up earlier this year on Cry Macho, but that project is tabled for now. CAA reps Schwarzenegger and Woods, ICM reps the directors.

Looking forward to this combination. It’s been a long time since Hollywood has had an innovative action film.
I’m sorry – I must have missed the part where there was ANYTHING innovative about any of the films Arnie has signed up to since his term ended.
I was hoping he would do more dramas from now on and stop pigeonholing himself as just an action star. This was a second chance for him and it is so disappointing to see from these projects that he is choosing that he doesn’t want to reach his full potential as an actor.
Maybe he’s reached his full potential
He was never a good actor and any effort to attempt otherwise would just be embarrassing. I’m glad to see Cry Macho dead.
Don’t be so disappointed. This is the full potential.
Very excited to see Arnold back in action!
This looks amazing! Waugh and McCoy and Schwarzenegger! This is a great combo. Can’t wait to see it.
I can’t wait to see Arnold in this film. This guy has it all. What a great story he is. He such an amazing acting talent who governed the great state of Ca. succesfully while maintaining strong moral and family values as a loving husband and father. Good for you Arnold.
Ha, ha! Good, you had me until “successful”.
you left off your /sarcasm tag.
you were a little early posting this i take it…. so sad
Not meaning to be critical — I’m as curious about what Arnold does with his cinematic future as anyone else — but it’s interesting that no major Hollywood studios seem to spark to working with the The Austrian Oak again…these are all fairly ‘indie’ productions.
Arnold has actually largely worked for independants in the past too, he has rarely worked on directly studio funded pictures, see Carolco and DEG.
“cinematic future” = Jumbo Shrimp.
You can’t say he didn’t warned us: “I’l be back!”
Don’t go away mad, Arnold – just go away.
Can’t wait to see what the Banditos can do with Arnold!
The premise sounds acceptable and if it’s directed with verve it COULD be a cracker. Any word on budget, Mike? I haven’t even heard what the budget on Last Stand is yet. Anyone any ideas? As an aside, I’d still like to see Arnie do With Wings As Eagles one day, with Verhoeven preferably directing. A long-shot, I know…
Hat’s off to you Mr Governor. Did you ever do anything with that property, in Carpenteria. I was happy to have been your neighbor.
“Operation Black Sand”, has a nicer ring to it. You will be bringing a new Essence back to the screen.
Once a man falls in love with his Hollywood, he feels the love of his Hollywood.
If the love is not real, one of the two of them will feel it.
If the love is real, however, the world will know of loves the power. And they will have hope.
I’ve come to heal, not to lead.
David.
Sorry “Governator”, The Karma Police say you don’t get to ruin an entire state then collect millions acting like a pretend badass. This project is epic fail!
The only things that would make this project less appealing to the public is to add Mel Gibson and have Roman Polanski direct.
Your right! They should get Mel to direct and star in it; after they re-write it with eastern European, islamic, or Asian arms dealers, where most of them are. There definitely aren’t any large scale “ruthless arms manufacturers” in the United States of American. Never have been, and probably never will be; unless death from above obama gets another term.
Hmmm, sounds like a ripoff of a Stephen Hunter novel featuring Earl Swagger. A ripoff of the general premise if nothing else.
It is a FANTASTIC project. Tried to make it years ago, alas… Al Ruddy producing. Can’t go wrong.

I wonder if this wonderful project that was conceived years ago; had American villains back then? Or did they chicken out recently.
I’m glad this wasn’t the kind of hollywood that was around during world war ll. Or we would have been afraid to offend the krauts, the japs, and the ities; otherwise know as our enemies, the people trying to kill us.
That’s right Schwartz!! xoxo
Hollywood has really become a bunch of gutless weasels. They’re afraid to offend anyone but Americans. How many ruthless weapons manufacturers are there in the southwest? This completely ridiculous; there are any numbers of countries, governments, religions, and terrorists groups in the world. And the best hollywood can do American arms manufacturers, and businessmen for villains. Disgusting, and sad!
Jeez, this is Hollywood, where yarns are spun any ol’ which way. Go Arnold! You gotta bout 10 years left, tops. By the way, the USA is by far the largest arms exporter, and has been for many years, so please no bellyaching.
Arnold, please include ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction’ in this movie. Also an over the top amount of sex and violence.
I am really looking forward to some great Arnie action movies if he is still up to it. Every Arnie movie I have watched has been enjoyable. I guess I missed the bad stuff. I watched Eraser last week and it brought back some old memories. So, yes., I want Arnie back!
It’s nice to see all of Schwarzenegger’s flaks posting here, but honestly folks, what California resident would willingly shell out $$$ for anything starring this guy? He’s finished. And he won’t be back. Not as an action star anyway.
