EXCLUSIVE: After wrapping their first film Much Ado About Nothing, Joss Whedon and Kai Cole’s micro-studio Bellwether Pictures has set a follow-up. It’s the supernatural romance In Your Eyes. Whedon wrote the script and Brin Hill will direct. Cole will produce with Night & Day Pictures’ Michael Roiff. Whedon will be executive producer and David Rothenberg will be co-producer. Whedon, who just wrapped Marvel’s The Avengers, also directed Much Ado About Nothing and shot it in secret before officially launching Bellwether last week.
In Your Eyes is a metaphysical love story about two seemingly polar opposites who are deeply connected in ways neither could have ever imagined. “When I wrote In Your Eyes, I didn’t have the wherewithal (or the moxie) to make it without an established production house,” Whedon wrote in a statement. “I believe, as I did then, that it’s a pretty timeless romance, and now, with the creation of Bellwether Pictures (and Brin Hill’s elegant, passionate take on the piece), I have the opportunity to prove it. (I also have a 37% increase in moxie.) I love this team and I can’t wait to see them bring In Your Eyes to life.”
Roiff produced Hill’s first film, Ball Don’t Lie, as well as the Adrienne Shelly-directed Waitress and just wrapped Save The Date. “Pairing Joss’ fantastic script with Brin’s vision as a filmmaker will make for a truly special film,” Roiff said. Hill also wrote the scripts Learning To Fly for Walden Media and Battle Of The Year for Screen Gems. The film’s fully financed and will shoot in February. Whedon’s repped by CAA, Hill by WME and The Collective.

I’m really looking forward to those two projects. But does this mean Whedon isn’t working on “Avengers” anymore? Principal photography may be done, but what about post?
I doubt Whedon will animate The Avengers’ CGI by himself, so he should have enough time producing another movie on the side.
Given that Whedon is not directing In your Eyes (he’s the writer and an exec producer), I suspect he will still have plenty of time to work on post for Avengers.
It sounds like he wrote the screenplay years ago. So not much for him to do on this film.
Much Ado on the other hand was filmed during his vacation.
So neither projects would interfere with his Avengers schedule.
@Pete He’s still working on “The Avengers”. He made “Much Ado About Nothing” during a break he had after “The Avengers” finished filming and it seems like he’d written the script to this a while ago so he won’t need to be involved in day to day filming .
He’s still working on Avengers. MAAN was shot on his vacation & he’d already written IYE (which is his only listed credit on that film so far).
Joss Whedon is the most over-rated person in hollywood. What has he done to be continually referred to as a genius?
Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible, etc… He doesn’t make a single thing wrong
Can’t say I care for any of Joss Whedon’s projects.
On top of that, he’s an atheist, which is to say he’s more arrogant than a bag of fundamentalists.
The holocaust was neither wrong nor right, it just was…
Great ideology! Have fun with that, Joss.
When did he ever say that, Jack? You can’t just lump someone in with SOME atheists just because some atheists have that idea. That’d be like saying all Christians protest soldier burials just because the Westboro Church does. I’m not an atheist myself, I’m Catholic. But I’m not gonna judge people for their choices, that’s between themselves and God. Not up to you.
You don’t have to like his work. I love him, personally, but I would never criticize someone for not liking him. That’s your opinion. But come on, that’s a pretty atrocious assumption to make about a person’s beliefs.
Then again, you may just be trolling, and I might have just been a victim of it. Who knows.
When did he ever say he thought that? Never. You just have the mistaken idea that atheists have no morality, I suggest you read some moral philosophy.
Sorry but Joss, like most atheist, don’t understand or haven’t thought out their own philosophy.
If God does not exsist, then we are nothing more than byproducts of chemicals and atoms bumping into one another.
Therefore, morals and ethics, good and evil, justice, law — they are nothing more than dreams from an intelligent animal.
The most ironic website in the world is Atheist for Human Rights. Hate to break it to ya, but if God ain’t real neither is human rights.
So the only thing that keeps you from raping, murdering and stealing is the idea that an invisible Sky Daddy is watching you?
No. Because I believe in God. Because I believe in good and evil.
What keeps you from doing it? Oh, right. Going to jail.
How noble of you, TL.
That’s the point he’s making. If God doesn’t exist, then morality is merely an idea/philosophy and not a truth.
Under atheism, the holocaust is neither just or unjust. It was simply animals killing other animals.
(I find the holocaust disgusting and evil, BTW)
Here’s a Whedon quotation (from Angel): “If nothing we do in this world matters, then the only thing that matters is what we do.”
Is fear of Hell the only thing that keeps people from doing evil? Plenty of God-fearing folks have done wrong–sometimes even in the name of their chosen deity. And some people who don’t care much about What Comes After have tried to live good lives & make this world a better place. Even if their work is producing smart & funny entertainment….
Don’t you understand how stupid that quote is? If nothing we do in this world matters, then NOTHING WE DO MATTERS. Zero plus zero doesn not suddenly equal four.
Unbelievable how thick you guys are. We’re not defending organized religion. Evil men have done very evil things in the name of God. But all Jack was trying to say is that atheist are giant hypocrites. You guys say God doesn’t exist, life has no meaning, but OH, slavery is wicked and evil… Learn to think critically.
utterly false, sam. I tried to explain in small words below. YOU are constrained by myth, maybe. I believe in acting ethically without needing reference to a magical father figure to enforce it. The level of projection on display in your post is quite shocking and hilarious.
So when did this become about his religion? I mean seriously?
Nice, irrelevant and untrue ad-hominem attacks. Stay classy.
Your either a troll or an idiot,
In any case, god help you….
What the hell do his personal areligious beliefs have to do with anything? you’re randomly off topic dude, take it to another forum. This is about film and creativity. What a director’s religious preference or non-preference is, has absolutely nothing to do with his filmmaking.
Tell that to all the people who hate, Mel Gibson.
congratulations on posting the most ridiculous thing on the Internet today, Jack. it’s quite an achievement.
Sam, this goes for you too: you are completely off base, making up interpretations for what other people believe base on your OWN beliefs. All my friends are either atheist or agnostic and NONE of them think that evil doesn’t exist just because it wasn’t decreed by some mythical ghostly bearded man in the sky.
In fact, atheists and agnostics are logically much MORE ethical than religious believers. If your invisible sky-daddy hadn’t told you it was wrong, would you be out there killing people you wouldn’t like? I wouldn’t.
This allegation you make is a thinly veiled but very revealing statement about your OWN psychology. You mythical beliefs keep you from acting like an animal. I, on the other hand, am a rational person, and I choose to act in an ethical way, even though I’m not scared of Hell at all, since it is a childish and primitive bit of nonsense.
I’m glad you believe, though. otherwise heaven knows what you’d be doing.
Also, Joss is awesome.
THANK YOU for proving my point.
You guys don’t understand your own ideology. As Dosteyevsky pointed out, “If God doesn’t exist, EVERYTHING is permissable.”
Don’t you get it?! If we are nothing more than chemicals running into chemicals, then the survival of mankind doesn’t matter. Good and evil don’t exist.
You and your friends are only behaving out of politeness and fear of others doing harm to you. What upsets me about atheist is this belief that they’re somehow more evolved when they are laughably ironic.
I’m agnostic. I believe in God, a higher being. I believe in good and evil. What do you believe in?
Pot, meet kettle.
Night and Day will do a great job with this project. Good to see that Roiff and Hill are partnering after the really intriguing, “Ball Don’t Lie”.
Joss created Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the movie and tv show) It became a cult following. Firefly was cancelled in the first season, yet the fans got behind it and an amazing movie was made. They still have q&a for these shows years later.
I didn’t realize that being an atheist means that someone is both necessarily arrogant AND that he or she cannot have an opinion on the morality of the Holocaust.
Further, I also didn’t realize that one’s personal beliefs are relevant to the quality of their work. That being said I’ve loved Joss Whedon’s work and I would whether he was a Christian, a Muslim, a Zoroastrian, an Atheist or anything else.
Fundamentalists are much more scary than atheists. Atheists don’t care what you believe and leave you alone to do your own thing, while Christian and Muslim fundamentalists will get offended if you hold any belief contrary to what the hold and may even try to kill you for it.
“Atheists don’t care what you believe…”
Tell that to the 20 million people worked to death in the Gulag.
We don’t even have to get into what Mao or Hitler did.
How naive you are, Joe.
Attacking atheists? Really? Just because they don’t believe in Santa Clause or your God? Why do you think they don’t believe in a God? Because of people like you attacking them for questioning what is truth. Human nature is to question what is real, that is what we do as intelligent creatures. Yet your actions and the actions of other Christians like you push more and more people towards atheism. If they are all going to Hell what do you care, you’re saved right?
I don’t think he’s “attacking” them. He’s just calling them idiots. I happen to agree with that point.
Ah, idiot trolls who inject irrelevancy to any given topic (do you see the word “God” anywhere in the article?)…how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
Um, to quote Costello, less than zero.
PZ Myers has thoughtfully provided threads for you guys over at Pharyngula. You should go there. Now. Buhbye!
Oh–and we’re truly blessed (heh) by this sudden fecundity on Joss’ part. I can’t wait for all of ‘em!
First of all, I am thrilled to hear Joss is creating another show! I love all his work and would like to point out that this is the United States of America and we are free to believe in and worship or not worship as we see fit. No one should feel it is their job to judge people making different religious decisions. We are a free people, get used to it.
Joss isn’t really an atheist anyway, he’s a secular humanist.
He once said something like “Religion is believing in something without evidence, Humanism is believing in human beings despite lots of evidence to the contrary.”
Anyway, saying that atheists can’t or don’t have morality is idiotic, I’m an atheist and I’m fucking telling you that I can and do.
As Nietzsche pointed out, humanism is nothing more than a secular version of theism.
So you’re an atheist, yet you believe in morals…
Okay, why exactly? God doesn’t exist. There’s no meaning to life. We’re all just animals. But we MUST behave ourselves! Behave, behave, behave!
Really?
Like I said, hypocrites.
Um, *somebody* was out smoking dope during Philosophy 101.
It’s okay, dude. There’s plenty of Jack Chick comics for you to read. (Actually, they read pretty much like the above post.)
But you’d still be better off trying to sell your wares at PZ Myers’ Pharyngula, where there are plenty of people who’ll helpfully try to bring you up to date.
Oh, and by the way? The vampires in Buffy were described as animals a number of times (they were), and they didn’t behave. (Most of) the humans, however, did, because they were concerned with the welfare of their fellow human beings, not because Jeebus told them to.
This, coming from a hack editor of cartoons.
If there’s no creator, no meaning to life, your philosphy might as well be a bunch of dogs barking at one another.
It’s useless. Get over it.
You atheists are so freaking dumb. If God doesn’t exist, then robbing a bank or smashing someone over the head with a chair, well, that’s just as natural as a pack of lions taking down a zebra.
We’re just animals then. And you guys are too chickenshit to admit it.
Uh, Deadline … ? Remember the warning about comments being monitored? Wouldn’t this be a nice time to … you know … monitor? ‘Cause this is as off-topic as discussing donkey reproduction at the “Mission: Impossible” premiere.
Atheism, is the belief that there is no god.
Many atheists believe that there is a definite line between right and wrong. Not all atheists are moral relativists. One way to define “good vs. evil” is to think about “benefit and harm” to individuals and to functioning societies. Another way think about “good” is that which is psychologically and physiologically balanced and healthy. One’s conscience is not dependent upon believing or disbelieving in a god.
