Warner Bros has chosen Ben Affleck to adapt and direct The Stand, Stephen King’s apocalyptic mammoth book. Affleck has become a cornerstone director for the studio, but this would be his greatest challenge yet. Even King has been reticent about the idea of making a feature of his book, which previously was turned into a miniseries. With The Town and Gone Baby Gone, Affleck has shown the grit necessary to handle such an unforgettable tale. It’s early days, but the studio loves Affleck, who’s now directing Argo.

A Book like this needs Peter Jackson directing it and his wife adapting it. Period. The only other director would be delTorro. Affleck is is as bland as Alan Thicke in everything he does.
There was nothing “bland” about the two films Ben Affleck has previously directed and both Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro have certainly had their misfires. Stephen King’s “The Stand” is character driven and will not be able to rely on special effects to advance the narrative. There’s no elves, dwarfs and hobbits in this apocalyptic tale.
No! The Stand was an AWESOME book. A movie would have to cut out too much to fit in the time frame, you’d loose more than they lost in the mini series
I love the book! Must have read the book at least three times, have that series from the nineties, yeah that one did suck. I believe that Hollywood and affleck wouldn’t try to pull that off today. Stick with the script it’ll be outstanding!
I am skeptical, bit if it’s made I hope it is truly great. This is my favorite SK book. I actually enjoyed the miniseries, taking it for what is was. I would love to see a movie made, but as everyone knows, translating a book into a good movie can be a daunting task at best!
If Affleck reduces the epic novel to less than a two-hour movie, it can’t possible be half as good as the miniseries. Let’s hope Warner Brothers doesn’t skimp on budget to excise the many crucial parts of the book.
Nevertheless, it would be premature to judge before the final product.
P.S. Let’s hope someone remakes “The Shining” because Kubrick let Nicholson ham that one up which ruined the flick!
The miniseries version is well worth watching. Steven Weber is great; not a bit of scenery-chewing. Very solid as Jack.
The stand is an EPIC story.. I cant wait to see this movie!! however… I think what we are ALL desperately waiting for is a movie adaptation of THE DARK TOWER series!!! Now THAT would be EPIC!!!
I couldnt agree more!!!
Book was awesome.tv movie crap.but a movie would be great I think.
Yes, most of us know the tele-movie. But there are some people who have never heard of the mini series. So they would have nothing to compare it too. Why don’t we all just take a wait and see stance? If yo don’t want to see it then don’t. No one is twisting your are and making you see it when it comes out.
They will keep re-making movies until the end of time. Not a huge fan of remakes.
Why couldn’t a NEW master of horror, like Rob Zombie, tear this off??? Afleck is a drone!!!
Affleck: “Matt Damon can star in it! Oh, and we can make Nick Cage ‘The walkin’ dude’, yeah! and Angelina Jolie can be Nadine, except in THIS version, Nadine is a NINJA who is trained in the SPECIAL FORCES!! Oh, and Will Farrel can be Tom! M-O-O-N, that’s spells Will Farrel!! God, there’s no way this can FAIL!!!”
The S.K. Fans: O_O
Beautiful!
I just don’t see how a feature movie is going to be able to do justice to the book. It simply will not be able to tell the full tale.
The only way this can be pulled off and be GOOD is if they make this into at least a 2 part movie (like the final Harry Potter, or Twilight)and I’m talking 2 LONG movies.. 2.5 hours a piece minimum. With today’s technology this could really kick a$$ if it was done right. So Ben… PLEASE DONT F IT UP!!!! This is my favorite book and I’d hate to see it ruined like other King books-turned-movies in the past. Stick to the story like glue and make it into 2 (or more) parts and it has the potential to be great. We’ll see…..
When I was younger I bought the book on a trip to England. It was a monster of a big book to read…but it was also one of the finest stories I ever read ! As with so many masterworks of Stephen King…it will be very difficult to make a movie worthy of the written version. I hope they succeed though. A book has always one giant advantage over a movie…it allows room for your imagination to take over…and that gives it a whole other dimension. In a movie the factor imagination is taken away…so it has to be a damn good movie to reflect the true spirit of the book.
My only concern is we will Also have Jay and Silent Bob in it. But who would they play, Poke and Lloyd? Or Bob could be Nick. And Matt Damon …. Hmmmm, Larry?
No no no no no no no NO. NO. Unless Frank Darabont is involved, I really don’t think trying The Stand is a good idea at all. Frank’s proven that he can handle Stephen King’s writing, and actually make it something good to watch – but Affleck? No. NO.
I loved the book, liked the first movie way back when, and am eagerly waiting this new release.
Lets hope the Gunslinger series will be next, now that would be epic!!
I say go for it. A remake wouldn’t be the end of the world….or would it? lol
I want the dark tower movies… thats what I want.
Ben Affleck will be a good candidate, he can be goofy, but you can’t fault him in serious films either… I am looking forward to see this.
I want to know when they will make “the dark tower” books into movies?
i loved the film ‘the stand’ it was sold in a 2 video 6 hours long in total and iv seen it time n time again. never bothered with the mini series as i thought it was crap. i dont think you will find anyone to play ‘stu’ better than gary sinise tbh, he was fab.
however i do love affleck so cant wait to see this version
Plea to Ben Affleck: Please, please do not stray from the book. This is arguably the best work ever done by Mr. King. I’ve read it 5 or 6 times and feel I know the characters inside and out. The mini-series was a brave attempt (and Cicely Tyson was actually very good as Mother Abigail)but other adaptations of his work have been just awful – starting with The Shining. If you have to make it into 3 or 4 or 5 movies – that would be OK. Just don’t cut out a minute of it. It was a bestseller for a reason – trust me, you can’t improve on it.
Ruby Dee played Mother Abigail in the miniseries…
This is a fantastic book, one of my favourite books of Stephen King’s and I’d love to see a decent production of it. The TV mini series was dire, and it could be an excellent movie. I think it may be better boken into at least 2 movies though so none of the content is lost.
I also agree with the other comments that The Dead Zone would be a great remake – another excellent book!
I think he could really do a brillant movie out of this…Being a fan of the book works in his favor..and I really like the things hes directed so far…they arent the typical love story happy ending crap that seems to flood the movies now days…They really have a dark gritty feel to them..Ive loved everything I have seen…I loved the mini series, but agree ALOT had to be cut to make it TV appropriate…Its a hard story to mess up though…It speaks for itself…Its always been one of my favorite King..well and books of all time..NOT just because I was named after a character lol….Its just an epic story that you can read over and over and always catch something new…The characters are likeable and memorible..Even the “bad guys” and people in it about a 1/2 a second…..Some peope might not be interested or care about this..but im just tickled!!! I cant wait!!! I wanna see where he goes with this, what the cast is gonna be like…I always thought watching the Mini Series that this story was made for Movies…..Because not all of his book are…Cujo..not to offend anyone who liked the movie..but still u have to admit it did not translate well…It turned the dog into just another monster…no sympathetic quialities about him, not the thought porocess of him getting sicker and sicker..The sadness was taken out of it…I think The Stand could become something well done like Stand By Me ( the body ) or Shawshank Redemption or Delores Clairborne……Something very real that sticks with people long after its out of the theaters…and I think, despite some peoples oppinions on Affleck..that hes got the talent..even s a new director to really do this, and do it right…Like I said, its a hard story to mess up…Its all layed out there right infront of you just waiting for a camera…Im excited!!!!!..lol..
