Well, maybe it’s not official, but Brian Grazer said during an interview with MTV News that the TV portion of Imagine Entertainment’s adaptation of The Dark Tower will air on HBO. “We’ll do the TV with HBO and the movie with … to be determined,” Grazer said during an interview to promote Tower Heist. That would cover the two limited-run TV series that would be done alongside a film trilogy to tell Stephen King’s epic story, which was originally set up at Universal before the studio passed because of cost concerns. (Grazer’s Imagine partner Ron Howard was set to direct and Akiva Goldsman was writing.) Grazer also told MTV that Javier Bardem looks good to remain as the lead, gunslinger Roland Deschain, and that $45 million has been cut from the film budget. But don’t set your DVR just yet: While a potential Time Warner tie-up — HBO and, say, Warner Bros — makes sense for the ambitious project, we’ve learned that while the series have been pitched to HBO, there is no deal. We also hear that there has been no decision made about where a potential Dark Tower series would land or whether it would get made it all.

Nooooo. viggo morteson for roland. holy bad casting.
Haven’t you seen “No Country for Old Men”?
HBO is HBO, but this is a dumb move, because if you’re trying to do a multi-platform TV/movie franchise, limiting the TV portion to subscribers of a pay-cable service isn’t going to enhance the commercial potential of the film aspect, which needs to broaden beyond HBO subs.
True but HBO offers greater freedom for the filming, they have the ability to avoid so many censor pitfalls. This is a good home for the Dark Tower.
Would love to see HBO tackle this. Clearly, they KNOW how to do smart fantasy better than anyone around. And people will pay for it. Especially since the networks can’t seem to deliver anything except crap-genre. Dark Tower + Game of Thrones seems like ratings gold. And the audience will come. As long as the storytelling delivers.
Not to mention Boardwalk Empire.
It’s almost worth paying for now. If they add Dark Tower, then I’m a subscriber for life.
This isn’t happening at HBO. With the high costs of Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and Luck. I don’t see them shelling out more $ for a risky high cost- high concept series.
I agree on HBO not doing it because of the other show’s costs. They are wrapping up on season 2 of Game of Thrones and if the show gets a third season the budget will be unreal even with splitting the third book into two seasons. But Game of Thrones followed by Dark Tower would be a fun night of TV.
The Dark Tower would have the Stephen King insignia attached to it which would automatically draw interest, plus HBO’s built group of high drama fans
Nooo! Hugh Laurie is the man! He´s the one to play Roland
Hugh Laurie sucks, and so does his show house. Whoever said he should play Roland is ridiculous! C’mon read the books before you say something so dumb.
The Dark Tower has a base following that HBO could bank on (not to mention Stephen King’s name).
Go to Showtime or AMC, they have proven to be quite competitive or yet superior to the likes of HBO.
Agree 100% that viggo morteson is bad casting. Sam Trammell (True Blood) would be great!
Screw HBO and their antiquated business model! (I love their shows, but I buy them or rent them; I don’t need ESPN or basic cable or year-old, pan&scan movies!)
