No surprise here: CBS’ breakout hit 2 Broke Girls has received a full-season order. I hear CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler personally broke the news to the cast and crew at the comedy’s table read this morning. 2 Broke Girls, co-created by Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings and starring Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, lived up to its promise as CBS’ highest-testing pilot ever. Following a big launch behind the season premiere of Two And A Half Men, 2 Broke Girls now ranks as the highest-rated new series this season among adults 18-49 (5.8/14) and total viewers (15.5 million). This past Monday, the multi-camera comedy drew a 4.5/11 in the key adult demographic and 11.4 million viewers. The pickup makes it 2-for-2 for Cummings, whose new NBC comedy series Whitney received a back-nine order yesterday.

This show seems to have gotten worse…mean, kinda racist and a bit lazy with the writing. I’m not sure what is being rewarded. I hope it improves, but no one seems to care.
Well you always go watch the other crap they put on tv. Like “The Good Wife” or “Reality TV”. My point is stop complaining about a show that makes other people happy. If you don’t like the show, just keep you thoughts to yourself and don’t watch the show!!!
New York Magazine has a great write-up on how this show is not funny, racist, and uses “mean” as a stand-in for humor.
Seriously, the idea that “racism” is just some accusation that people throw out there is silly. They put in an Asian guy because none of the writers on this show are capable of nuance or actual humor.
So, keep whining about diversity and thinking you’re a great progressive Democrat, when you just throw out racial stereotypes that are worse than what Republicans can dream up.
I really wanted to like this show, because the acting is so good. However, the very unneccesary racist comments have turned me off, and I will never watch this show again. The writers need to keep their personal racist beliefs out of the show in order for it to be successful. Those of you who wish to help erase racism should not watch this show. You are too evolved to ‘get it’.
I’m a big fan of the female comedy resurgence and I want to root for these shows, but this one is dreadful. And everyone I know that doesn’t work on it or know someone involved with it thinks it’s dreadful.
The actresses are good, the plots and dialogue are as bad as it gets. Interested to see how long the ratings hold up.
um, it’s called CBS. “the plots and dialogue are as bad as it gets” means “this show will be huge forever.”
Each episode has gotten worse, but there’s still some potential there between the concept and the actresses involved. Maybe the full-season order is what it needs to finally reach that potential.
Until then, it’s nothing to go out of my way to watch.
It’s a formula thing;
culture clash and displaced person, finacially challenged leads in troubled economy and a formerly successful creator with a lead in by the #1 schtick in the TV biz, Two and a Half Men with Kutcher and without Sheen…
whatever’s wrong with it will work itself out to the highest demographic and the lowest denominator.
If you’re liking the new Two and a Half Men that leads it, it will remain as it is until either 21/2Men improves or is cancelled.
2 Broke Girls deserves its pickup – unlike Whitney which is the worst of the fall’s new shows.
On a timing note, it only took THR nine minutes to follow Deadline.com’s e-mail with the news.
This show is ridiculously bad. I don’t understand why anyone would watch more than one episode.
sounds like u write for New Girl
I agree. This show is dated. Clearly, the talent is there but the dialogue is awful. And I know Williamsburg is now gentrified but there are people of color in Williamsburg. Since this show did get picked up then hire some realistic Brooklyn people.
I don’t get all the hate for this show. I mean, it’s pretty lowest common denominator, but it’s cute aside from the lazy racism. The leads are great and yes, I laugh at this show! There are plenty worse multicams (aka Whitney, ironically.)
You’re right about the racism. I finally watched this yesterday and couldn’t believe that virtually every character who isn’t a white girl is an over-the-top caricature of his or her ethnic group. It’s shocking and sad.
Yeah, all that… lazy racism aside.
The leads are good, Garrett Morris is way underutilized and I feel sorry for the actor playing the Chinese owner. They’ve got him acting as Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s bad. Damn shame.
I MUST AGREE WITH ROBYN ABOUT 2 BROKE GIRLS. THE TWO LEAD ACTRESS MADE THE SHOW A WINNER. IF WHITNEY ON NBC GOT A FULL SEASON,I BELIEVE THAT 2 BROKE GIRL SHOULD GET THE SAME TREATMENT. I CAN’T WAIT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR BACKGROUND IN FUTURE EPISODE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Agreed. And it’ll grown into itself more as the season wears on.
Agree with most of the comments here. The two leads are great, the show itself, not so much. Their talents are being wasted in a mediocre show. I wanted to like this show, but the writing is just so bad. What is it with sitcoms these days??? Why must the scripts consist of nothing but one-liners?
How do so many lousy writers get these jobs writing such lousy comedy? It’s no wonder people flock to unscripted television over this schlock.
If they would just concentrate on character and plot, this show could be enjoyable.
It makes jokes about rape. It has an Asian character who couldn’t be more of a slur if he had buck teeth. It plays most “ethnic” characters in ways that date to Vaudeville. It’s 2011, there’s just no excuse for writing this dated and this fucking awful.
So, um, yeah, that’s why all the hate.
What’s truly depressing, if you start to think about it, is that sitcom writing was far more intelligent and daring in the 1970s.
I am a huge fan of Two Broke Girls.
The above 2 comments sound like Two Jealous Writers!
Have you watched TV lately? This is funny and fresh.
Its a sitcom. Realism does not exist on TV.
Come on Girrrrrrrrr dont be J!
Not a television writer, but someone who enjoys smart, funny, and well-written sitcoms, none of which can be said of “Two Broke Girls.”
Plus, I mentioned that the leads show that there is potential there, unfortunately it is the writing that is horrendous….
“Jealous writers…”
Ugh, the first and last refuge of 12 year old girls. “You’re just jealous!”
I happen to agree the show is shlock, and maybe my opinion is the least popular, or far off the consensus. But I am SO effing sick and tired of seeing “you’re just jealous” somehow become this nation’s retort of first and last resort. Hell, I’d rather all you folks who employ it reflexively would just go back to, “What-EVAH.”
I agree I have not laughed at a tv show for a long time its called humor laugh out loud funny. If people stop making things about race maybe everyone wont be so uptight!!
I like this show because it is serves as a nice, refreshing breathmint before the chuck lorre dreck begins.
Wendi Trilling really deserves credit for all these hit CBS comedies.
Tassler has nothing to do with them and should focus on the drama lineup.
Love Kat Dennings but they need to lose the laugh track. Hideous, just hideous, and it dates the entire show utterly.
It’s not a laugh track and if performing comedy in front of an audience is dated, then so is every late-night comedy show. The mockumentary format seems far more dated at this point (not that dated is bad).
There is a lot that’s dated about this show, including a version of New York that suggests the writers haven’t been there (or anywhere) in years, but the audience response isn’t one of them.
There was absolutely no plot in last nights episode. None. Every writer on that show should be embarrassed. Plus, everyone is a stereotype. And poor Garret Morris. He’s basically just the token black guy that gets one line an episode. Not right. So much wrong with this show. Should be cancelled, not picked up.
Lastly, the poor horse has to suffer through all those tapings for one joke that’s not funny. Not cool.
Two Broke Girls is one of the sitcom highlights of the season so far. Considering the dreadful crop of new shows this years, that might not be that much of an achievement. Hopefully, TBG will continue to improve, but needs to go with a live studio audience instead of the laugh track (how 1950s).
TBG relies too heavily on lazy stereotypes – the wise-cracking old man (Morris), the driven Asian (owner), the salacious Russian (cook), the streetwise but poor waitress (Dennings), and the heiress with a heart of gold (Behrs). Behrs really needs to work on her voice – it is increasingly annoying to listen to her. And can we get Garret out from behind the cash register desk, or is he disabled?
I’m still trying to figure out why Whitney got renewed for a full season on NBC. The ratings for this show gave it the boost it needed to attain renewal for a whole season. The new Zoey Deschanel show should get a full season order on FOX by friday.
you are clearly the only intelligent person in here. Whitney is absolute trash. I refuse to watch two broke girls because of it. not to mention the fact that i don’t watch any cbs comedy because of the laugh tracks. and the New Girl is pretty funny. definitely deserves a full season way more than Whitney or any show she is affiliated with.
Whitney Cummings is red-hot right now she’s 2 for 2 in her pick-ups. Both of her shows will get the whole season to grow their audience for next season.
Both shows are laugh out loud hilarious and only people who think their not funny are the smart comedy fans but everybody outside of that thinks their funny. Go figure right!
‘They are’ equals ‘they’re’ not ‘their.’
Funny is funny whether it’s considered smart comedy or not and Whitney the show and Whitney Cummings the ‘comic’ are simply not funny. NBC is backing it up b/c it has no choice after digging a financial hole promoting it to death and not having 30 Rock until January.
“Whitney” got picked up because NBC spent a billion dollars promoting it. If it had any pulse at all the network had to pick it up to avoid humiliation.
“Two Broke Girls” got the plum time slot and was just stupid enough to appeal to the CBS demo.
Cummings is a success for now but “Whitney” won’t be on the air next year. “Two Broke Girls” does stand a chance if the scripts can’t stop completely sucking.
“does stand a chance if the scripts can’t stop completely sucking”
excuse me, ummm, what???
are you haters completely delirious? please realize the writers of some of your favorite television comedies ever (you do the imdb work) are behind these episodes.
the multi-camera comedy is back, like it or not.
“One does have to learn to look at art, but it’s up to the artist to use language that can be understood. Most of these jokers don’t want to use language you and I can learn. They would rather sneer because we fail to see what they are driving at, if anything. Obscurity is the refuge of incompetence.” – R. A. Heinlein
2 Broke Girls is one of those shows where they occasionally have a laugh out loud line but the overall writing is terrible. Agree with the people above, there is racial stereotyping galore in this show. I mean, maybe if it was just one character it could be shrugged off but the Asian owner, Garrett Morris, the Russian cook…The only bright spot is that the leads are excellent.
This show would be great in the late 70′s right after “WKRP in Cincinnati” or better yet pair it with “Alice”.
I liked the pilot but the next episodes were dead on arrival from the stale plot and stiff acting from Dennings.
They could put a test pattern on after Two and Half Men and it would get a full season pick-up.
And do NYC subway cars have graffiti on them again like back in the 70′s??
LOL listen to the PC police. I’m black and have no problem with the so-called “stereotypes.” Newsflash it’s TV, people. I’m sure Garrett Morris is happy to be getting a paycheck, as is the Asian actor who plays the owner.
Once again the hipper-than-thou cry about the laugh track. Enough with the ironic hipster shit. Laugh tracks give the jokes ROOM TO BREATHE. Everybody’s not as SUPER-INTELLIGENT as you clearly are.
The leads are appealing, especially Kat Dennings and her boobs. Humor is a bit low-brow, but after Two and a 1/2 Men, what isn’t?
Tell you what, stick to Portlandia and keep waiting for the Arrested Development movie. The rest of us will enjoy 2 Broke Girls.
Not surprised this is doing so well. Look at its timeslot.
Haven’t seen it yet, but it’s lead-in is Two and a Half Men which has been the most watched show the past two weeks.
Everyone is staying on after Two and Half to check this one…
I would like to see the writers develop the character of the black girl with the African name that was in the second episode!
