EXCLUSIVE: New father Jerry O’Connell may play one on TV next season. CBS has bought an untitled multi-camera family sitcom about new parenthood starring O’Connell and written by Jeff Astrof (The New Adventures Of Old Christine). CBS TV Studios and 3 Arts are producing. This marks O’Connell’s return to CBS and CBS Studios after starring in the network and studio’s dramedy series The Defenders last season.
As a father of 2-year-old twins, O’Connell had been looking to translate his experience and its hilarity into a comedy series vehicle when he read Adam Mansbach’s “bedtime book for parents” Go The F**k To Sleep. He liked the comedic yet honest tone of it, which he found similar to what he was going for. 3 Arts, which manages O’Connell and Mansbach, got them together, and they started bouncing around ideas for a TV show. With neither of them having TV writing experience, they looked around for a showrunner and met with Astrof, also a 3 Arts client, immediately after he became available when How To Be A Gentleman was recently shut down. Astrof served as an executive producer on the CBS/CBS Studios freshman comedy series and had a blind script deal with CBS Studios, which has now been applied to the new project. Astrof, O’Connell and Mansbach got their heads together and will share “story by” credit on the potential series. Astrof and Mansbach will co-write the script for the project, an adult family sitcom about a struggling writer catapulted into the spotlight as a parenting expert after his tongue-in-cheek children’s book becomes an unexpected hit. ICM-repped Astrof will showrun and executive produce with 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg and Richard Abate. UTA-repped O’Connell and CAA-repped Mansbach will co-executive produce.

Does a day go by when CBS isn’t buying a comedy?
See how easy it is to make it in showbiz? This happens all the time anyone can do it because every project happens this quickly and simply all the pieces fall into place right away in five seconds then fame and fortune are yours for the taking.
Jeff is a fantastic, hilarious writer and a great guy. Congrats to him!
Another parenting show?
My thoughts exactly. Enough, already. Can I claim all these TV kids as my dependents? Then again, if they’re depending on people like me, they won’t be on the air for long.
What happened to “Contenders”? Or whatever it was called with Belushi – that show was mediocre which compared to shows on air means it was awesome.
I think what Jerry is really trying to do is make up for the fact that he wanted to replace Charlie Sheen and wasn’t considered. Ha.
The most recognizable actor in “Piranha 3D” and the funniest writer on “$#*! My Dad Says” together at last!
Players play!
Jeff Astrof is one of the funniest writers I’ve ever worked with. They’re lucky to get him.
Jeff is a nice guy who needed to have a manager to take 10 per cent more out of his paycheck ..so he is payong 20 per cent out of gross and then the manager shoves his way into producing to take profits ..reall smart Jeff
Note to every writer in Hollywood – Stop writing pilots about being a new parent just because you’re a new parent! You do realize you’re not the first writer to have a child. Nor are you the first writer to write a pilot about your “crazy” experiences. It’s been done about a THOUSAND times. And your kid’s not smarter, or funnier, or weirder than anyone else’s. And your wacky parental experiences are not funnier, or weirder than anyone else’s. They’re the same as everyone else’s. And your pilot will not be funnier, or weirder than anyone else’s. It will the same as everyone else’s. So try harder. Please.
Oh, and network people. Just because YOU just had a child doesn’t mean you have to buy every pilot about someone who just had a child!
End of rant.
Jeff is an arrogant misogynist. And not funny.
Jeff is an incredibly talented guy with a wife that is way too good looking for him.
I agree with Justin.
Jerry is a talented personality. He truly should be a big star in the sitcom arena! Good for him.
This sounds great! Another reason to stop watching TV. Thanks CBS.
Congrats to Jerry. The man will absolutely kill it and deserves nothing but the best.
I miss the defenders!
F this town same same same white folks over and over and over again unfunny privileged people getting opportunities, the Hollywood TV merry go round so much FUN, oh you Black and Latino kids and you Asian kids well sorry no room for you all the WHITE kids are on and it’s gonna be a really long time before you can get on.
Was thinking the same thing as I read Deadline – just not a lot of opportunity for people of color. I’d be very frustrated and disappointed if I were in the biz.
