Charlie Sheen’s ‘Anger Management’ Wraps Series Of Pitch Meetings; Who’s Interested?
Charlie Sheen’s new sitcom Anger Management has landed at FX with an initial order for 10 episodes for a summer 2012 launch. If successful, that will be followed by a 90-episode order by FX as well as broadcast syndication launch by distributor Debmar-Mercury in fall 2014. After a marathon of pitches to broadcast and cable networks earlier this month followed by a short window of intense negotiations, the direct-to-series project has found a home at the cable network that already carries reruns of Sheen’s previous series, Two And A Half Men, to great ratings success. The cable network also owns the TV rights to the 2003 Jack Nicholson-Adam Sandler movie Anger Management — about a mild-mannered man (Sandler) ordered to attend group anger-management sessions led by a volatile therapist (Nicholson) – on which the series is loosely based. Sheen plays a version of Nicholson’s character on the show, produced by Lionsgate TV and distributed by sibling Debmar-Mercury. Joe Roth, who produced the movie, is producing the series with Sheen, who retains a significant ownership stake, and The Drew Carey Show creator Bruce Helford, who serves as writer/showrunner. Production is slated to begin in early 2012. “We think that Bruce Helford, Joe Roth and Charlie Sheen have come up with a wonderful, hilarious vehicle for Charlie’s acting talents — and a character we are very much looking forward to seeing him play,” said FX president John Landgraf. “Two And A Half Men has been an outstanding component of FX’s schedule for the past 14 months, and we have every confidence that Anger Management will soon be as well.”
Lionsgate topper Jon Feltheimer was instrumental in putting together the project, which will be done under Debmar-Mercury’s 10-90 production model that the company pioneered with several TBS series, including Tyler Perry’s House Of Payne & Meet The Browns and Roth/Ice Cube’s Are We There Yet? The template includes a trial 10-episode run that, if ratings guarantees are met, triggers a 90-episode pickup. (Because of its corporate ties to Two And A Half Men producer Warner Bros TV, which was sued by Sheen over his firing from the show, TBS was out of play for Anger Management.) A unique issue with Anger Management that Debmar-Mercury didn’t have with its previous series under the model is the insurability of star Sheen, who has a history of addiction problems, though he performed his duties on CBS’ Two And A Half Men for eight seasons.
Sheen attended the Anger Management pitch meetings held both on the East and West coasts. Among those who took the pitch were broadcast networks NBC, Fox and ABC and cable networks FX, USA Network, A&E, Comedy Central and TV Land and streaming company Netflix.

FX comedies are usually great (Sunny, The League, Archer, Wilfred, Louie, etc) so there might be some hope this one will be good as well. Hopefully not SOLELY picked up because of the huge ratings it will get.
And it will be canceled by fx
As 2 and a Half Men sinks further into oblivion, wouldn’t it be funny if Charlie Sheen got the last laugh after all?
As a huge fan of the show, if Lorre keeps Ashton, Charlie will…
And wouldn’t it be ironic if “Anger Management” surpasses that other series in ratings?
probaly will since the new two and a half men suck without charlie
Exactly. I stopped watching 2 and a 1/2 men, when they kicked Charlie off. Ashton sucks. Can’t wait to see Charlie in Anger Managment. He will be great. Can’t wait. Go Charlie Go
I agree,I never did like Ashton. How did he ever get the part dont know anyone that likes to watch him.I hope Charlie makes a Big come back……
I do believe there is no doubt anymore about who is winning !
cosign!!!
Luv Charlie Sheen (especially the Charlie Sheen circa 1987 in Wall Street). This just might be a great show. As long as Sandler isn’t in it- bleccch.
CHARLIE U RULE!!! xo xo xo xo
Sounds like a sure deal for 100 eps – maybe Sheen is “winning” after all….
Never watched the fraction Men show, never will. I’m suspicious of series where the audience laugh track kicks in before the “joke” is finished.
Leave the original movie of Anger Management alone. I like the movie with Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler better.
please this movie was lame, i am sure Charlie can do something better with the concept (and yeah Jack Nicholson is a legend but this movie was not his best to say the least)
I would like to see jack on a couple of episodes
Well good luck loser. You had 15 million watchers and around 40-50 million dollars per year. And here you will be year later — around 1-2 millions watchers on cable FX channel and I wonder how much money they will pay him per episode. They obviously don’t have 2 millions dollars per episode. Loser!!!
Sheen’s cut of the backend is more than 20 percent, significantly more than a traditional network arrangement. Sheen will also get some creative control and an unusually large share of ownership, which could lead to many millions of dollars in compensation if the show gets on the air and performs in the ratings.
WINNING! PROBABLY!
Maybe this time Sheen chose ‘quality’ over money..think for once Shy..who is the ‘loser’ really ?..Go enjoy Ashton Kutcher fart jokes CBS show and stay away from internet boards..for your and our sake.
Awesome news !! FX was the best option, i am thrilled, can’t wait for this summer !!
I don’t watch Two and a Half Men. Not before with Sheen, not with Kutcher. I don’t understand how people could watch it. It’s such a stupid show.
Riley – “Sheen will also get some creative control…” Please. Do you remember how last time when he had control and was writing his own jokes? That was on his “Loser Tour around country” that bombed. It wasn’t funny and his own fans booed him.
Here is the biggest problem. Sheen bumped on that Anger Management movie somewhere on TV when he was drunk. And thought: “Oh it will be funny if I would do it. I will go and scream like Nicholson and people will laugh. Because they laughed at my “troll and tiger blood” jokes”. … And here is the problem. During that meltdown people laughed not because Sheen was funny. It was because he said all those ridiculous stuff with serious face and he believed in his own hype. And that was funny.
Now Sheen will go and yell and scream in that TV show and no one would care. He thought he was bigger then show (2 & a half men) but here we are few months year later. He was fired, replaced and show still gets 15-16 million viewers. It didn’t go down to 8-9 millions like Sheen hoped it would.
I think the new 2 and 1/2 was being watched alot because like myself, people were hoping it would get better, (not)
Winning!
Thank you.
AWESOME NEWS !!! FX will allow for a lot more than regular networks. For example: American Horror Story..they get away with so much, its surprising.
Kurt Sutter to co-star.
No one will ever accuse Helford of creating anything out of the box, and despite his admirable sobering up and mea culpa-ing, Sheen is still damaged goods in the eyes of many viewers. The elements of this show don’t feel classy enough for FX. Then again, Landgraf & Co. are smart guys, so… I dunno.
Go back to two and a half men.. they need you Charlie
Awesome !! Of all the networks and cable channels on list i wanted FX !! Like that Helford will have some really great freedom for creativity, it could rock seriously !!
Go Charlie, can’t wait to watch.
Now that he’ll have income again, how long will it be before he’s back into his out of control addiction? I’m a huge FX fan so I hope they know what they’re doing. I love Charlie Sheen the actor. I hate Charlie Sheen the druggie.
I am surprised TVLand didnt get this show considering Charlie and Keith Cox have so much in common.
I agree with whatever Vickie says!
Good on ya, FX. Now give us more Archer, or I don’t know what I’m gonna do. Seriously, I really don’t know what I’ll do, but I can assure you it won’t be pretty.
interesting deal. normaly a show is not picked up for almost 90 episodes it has to build up to that. and fx must have something in place to make sure Charlie does not have a repeat of his two and half men craziness. should be interesting to check out
“I kicked junk but I can`t kick music” Keef Riffards
Ez on the oblivion tour Charlie and kick ass on the telly.
Always remember; High ratings are the best revenge.
FX comedies may be great, but Debmar-Mercury shows are cheap, assembly-line crap. Even if they do make the 90 extra episodes, they’ll have no rerun value and will disappear quickly.
I’m not a fan of Charlie Sheen but I have a lot more respect for him now that I’ve seen what a train wreck Two and a Half Men has become since his departure — although that may have as much to do with the show’s management as it does with Charlie’s absence. I’m puzzled at the show’s new direction because Kutcher’s character seems to be about the exact opposite of what would appeal to the audience that would enjoy watching Charlie’s character. I haven’t been a regular watcher and have only seen a few episodes of the show with Charlie, but had some chuckles. I’ve watched two of the episodes with Kucher and was really turned off by Kutcher’s boy-man character and the unmanly dialogue between Kutcher and Kryer. I won’t be watching again.
AGREED! The boy-man character Ashton is playing isn’t what the fans who made the show a hit want. It’s a really bizarre angle they took, one that doesn’t make sense and isn’t playing to the fanbase at all. Really weird. And the constant gay innuendos that Cryer makes towards Kutcher is strange, because the show was never about that. Also, having Kutcher take his shirt off once an episode is not humorous, it’s unsettling, as if Lorre has some crush on him. The fans of TWO & HALF MEN were middle America, and they loved Charlie’s attitude and humor, and to completely go against that by having Kutcher play an innocent man-boy that everyone has a crush on is just weird and uncomfortable and the laughs aren’t there. I don’t know why they went this angle. Clearly if they got their original choice, Hugh Grant, they would’ve made him an old british womanizing drunk, in line with Charlie but not exactly like him. Would’ve been fun for the fans. Ashton could’ve been a young confident a-hole who takes Alan under his wing. Instead they went this weird man-boy route while having Ashton get naked constantly and promoting his internet companies once an episode by having them blatantly advertised on his laptop. So odd, all of this.
Can’t stand the new 2.5 men kutchher ruins it for me good luck Charlie your not winning yer tho but you have the chance
Oh come on! Why do we have to lose another channel? We already don’t have CW, I have been a customer for years, and i never get the reasonable price, like $29.95 Now greed, has raised it’s ugly head again. I’m soooo sick of greed, greed, greed, Stop the madness!! I what to keep my service but if I most, drop them then I must!! Come on DTV get it together. Sign long time Customer.
Wow, I can’t believe he found a home for his show but I guess it’s not really surprising. Somehow the dude remains a huge ratings puller, and I think that’s what FX is hoping for with this move. He has enough fans that will tune in no matter what he does. Too bad for Sheenfans that are DirecTV customers though…if this thing between DirecTV and FOX goes south they may lose FX before “Anger Management” ever gets on air. Just glad I’m a DISH customer/employee right now so I don’t have to worry about it.
