EXCLUSIVE: Craig Gillespie is exiting Pride And Prejudice And Zombies, becoming the latest filmmaker to walk away from the Lionsgate project. The screen adaptation of the Seth Grahame-Smith novel mixes the 1813 Jane Austen classic with a legion of bloodthirsty zombies. So far, the film hasn’t had much luck with directors, or casting for that matter. Gillespie, who directed the critically acclaimed art house film Lars And The Real Girl and followed with Fright Night, came on to the film after Mike White left. White had replaced David O. Russell, who wrote the script. The split here was amicable but had to do with things like who to cast in the film. Casting has been tough on this one, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Lionsgate doesn’t look for not only a director but a package from an agency that includes cast as well.

I don’t really understand why casting is important for a b-movie.
ANOTHER one dropping out? Time to call it a day on this dud.
Why does anyone think this is a good idea? People who enjoy the Jane Austen/Merchant Ivory period pieces don’t want to see a zombie movie, and zombie movie fans don’t want to see anything in a Jane Austen setting.
It must be taking notes from Ali Shermur that’s driving folks away. She’s so full of herself. What a nightmare.
Jesus… what a shit-show
just give up already…this property is ridiculously overrated
Did they realize there’s no audience for this film?
Maybe they’d get some Tweens if it was vampires, but I don’t know who’s going to see this. Or why they think it’s a good idea.
The book sold well but the fact is bestselling books do not always translate to bestselling movies. Look at The Lovely Bones or Water for Elephants. Fact is PP&Z was a fluke and flukes dont translate to film audiences. Jane Austen for whatever reason is very hot right now but the new Austen lit thats going to bring in an audience is the stuff thats closest to her work.
Kind of agree with Clark but think instead of feature it would have been better to scale down the cast and budget and do it as a series for something like CW
God this sounds awful and always has. Can we put it out of its misery now?
It was a huge best selling book. It’s a gothic horror story, no different than Dracula & Frankenstein. Except the chicks kick Zombie ass, like Buffy. There should be some Whedon acolyte who could handle this. Done right, it could work. A good f**king flick is a good f**king flick.
Scrape that barrel, Lionsgate!
I’m sorry, but am I the only one who hated LARS AND THE REAL GIRL and just couldn’t buy the concept?
No.
No one should touch this turkey. This new millenium hackery must end.
By the by book publishers, IT’S OVER!
Technology will do to you what it did to music. Digital sales copying, tablets give authors direct access to our readers. And Amazon just dropped the bomb on your asses.
People posting that this is a horrible idea have obviously NOT read the book. The book is absolutely hysterical. The Bennett sisters have been trained by martial arts masters to fight off zombies and Elizabeth could seriously kick Darcy’s ass (and does!). Naysayers, stop speaking on topics you know nothing about.
There’s no hope for this, and by the time they put everything together the zombie craze will be over.
Lars and the Real Girl was awesome. How Craig goes from that to Fright Night to this is beyond me…
You are not the only one. But, in fairness, Fright Night was well done.
For all you haters out there…this was actually a really good book. I also enjoyed Abraham lincoln Vampire Hunter. Seth is a great writer and as long as he stays involved creatively – i think this is film is going to be a hit.
RJ Berger was a great show. Shame on MTV.
The people who commented negatively probably don’t even read. If you did you’d find a classic novel interwoven with a storyline that appeals to today’s audience. Now why the directors dropped out; I have no idea. Money, creative differences. Stay true to book is the best bet. A lesson learned by the Twilight franchise (by the way which has claimed some major caching). As for the casting issues; their are 10s of 1000s of amazing actors out there looking for there break. What’s the one thing we’ve all learned named and/or visually recognizable talent usually dooms a project the moment its announced in the trades. Peace.
Just do “P & P & Z” as a 5-minute sketch on SNL with Kristen Wiig, and call it a day.
Actually he went from Lars to Mr. Woodcock.
Cut of the head. Destroy the brain. Then burn what’s left.
I just checked out the interactive e-book version of this online. Don’t need to see the movie now and it was cheaper than sitting in a theater watching a crappy film version.
re: “If you did you’d find a classic novel interwoven with a storyline that appeals to today’s audience.”
Actually, classic novels left alone are very appealing as is. No need to add zombies or vampires to create interest in the story. Hopefully this trend of corrupting an author’s original works comes to end quickly.
To be honest, I really like the book, even when the most people (I’ve read the reviews on Amazon…) don’t like it.
And it realy made me want to read the original or Jane Austen in general. I even think about watching one of the many P&P movies, if Elisabeth is still somewhat kicking Darcys ass. I really like the tension between them. I hope in the original they still “fight” each other.
As for the film, if the trailer pleases me, I’d watch it o_o
