NBC Cancels New Comedy ‘Free Agents’
The CW is pulling new reality show H8R off the schedule effective immediately. Starting next week, the network will air repeats of new drama Ringer in H8R‘s Wednesday 8 PM slot. The demise of H8R extends the CW’s dry spell on the unscripted side, where the network has not been able to launch a successful series. (America’s Next Top Model started off on UPN.) The CW will use the slot to get additional sampling for Ringer, which the network’s brass like creatively and are getting behind despite recent ratings decline. This has become a trend this fall as NBC too replaced its recently canceled shows with reruns of freshman series in need of extra sampling: Prime Suspect (in for The Playboy Club) and Whitney (in for Free Agents). After perking up last week with the episode featuring Kim Kardashian, which hit a series high in total viewers and posted 50% gains in the demos, H8R returned to its middling ways last night (1.2 million viewers, 0.4/1 in 18-49), down 21% in total viewers and 33% in 18-49. The series features celebrities who get to confront their biggest haters.

I love Ringer! Hope it makes those gains they’re looking for.
Ringer is an awesome show, one of the only shows worth watching on this crapfest of a network.
More sampling ain’t gonna save Ringer. It’s a Turd Deluxe.
If they REALLY like the show, which they do, yes it will. GG is a terrible show, but the CW likes it so much, they keep renewing it even though its ratings are horrible. They’ll do what they want.
H8R is a fun show. CW needs to give it a chance. All my friends love it, Run Ringer all week if you want. Won’t change the fact that it’s just not very good.
H8R was a horrible idea for a show. Ringer is actually a very good show in my opinion and cancelling H8R means they finally did something right as far as I ‘m concerned. The network keeps renewing GG and 90210 and their ratings are horrible, so if they like a show, they’ll keep it regardless.
“hater was a horrible show”. no, it was not.
Great news! Now let’s just cancel the CW.
haha
Bummer… They won’t air the show with Joe Francis, in which a guy who was seriously suspected of statutory rape and was convicted of tax fraud is supposed to be a victim we must commiserate with.
And, no, celebrities weren’t confronted to their biggest haters. They were confronted to people who had done a casting for an unnamed reality show, were asked to monologue about the celebrity they hated the most and tried a mostly inarticulate rant against a D-lister.
I watched the premiere that had the quality of having a “nobody” not changing her opinion about one of the Bachelor contestants but even the train wreck aspect wasn’t enough to justify a full Scott Disick exposure. Mario Lopez desperately tried to make a vapid pseudo-celebrity prove he wasn’t a vapid pseudo-celebrity.
It didn’t go very well.
Then should have never cancelled Everwood in 2006! Or for that matter VERONICA MARS!!!
Exactly. It’s funny how VM was getting better ratings even on it’s worst night than anything on the current schedule bring in on it’s best night.
I am so with you on this!
It should have had a summer premiere or at least an early release before the other networks put out their fall shows. That way there would have been less competition. Didn’t the CW at one time release their fall shows early before the other networks?
CW should just order more episodes of One Tree Hill and premiere it’s final season earlier. It’s the network’s most consistent show. Seems like a no brainer.
God, no. No more One Tree Hill, that show is horrible and has been tanking in the ratings for years. If you’re going to advertise this season as the ‘final season’ like they have been, then let it be the final season. I don’t care if it’s consistent, it’s not a quality show. Let the cast move on already and put this trainwreck out of its misery. Renewing it for another season isn’t going to change the fact that it’s crap and has been crap for years and will continue to be crap.
The premise to H8R was idiotic.
They should have made it a contest or something, with the haters competing against the hatees in two categories: one that the hater is good at and another the hatee is good at.
If the hater wins, he/she gets a prize straight from the hatee’s pocket (a paid vacation or something).
And if the hatee won they could make the hater do something humilliating and fanboyish.
I have watched all four episodes of Ringer and the show is progressing nicely. Each episode has ended on a delicious cliffhanger leaving me wanting more. Sarah Michelle Gellar is showing off her extensive range between the twins. I am intrigued by Siobhan and routing for the underdog Bridget.
More ONE TREE HILL!!!!!!!!!!
Horrible show… You’re only dealing with stars that noone cares about. d-listers.. why would anyone watch… casting, casting, casting…
Speaking of haters….has anyone else been censored on Nikki’s site? Maybe it’s just me but ever since I commented on a story and included a link to one of Polone’s colums at NYMag, my comments are not appearing, even a condolence on Jobs’ death, which is really appalling. Is it just my imagination?
I’ve never been off topic, impersonated anyone…and she couldn’t possibly have been bored….
Maybe it’s my propensity to use ellipses……
H8R just not worthy. But Ringer is better than the ratings – but then – how often does that happen??
It was a stupid concept for what is perceived as an even more stupid consumer audience. Give Americans a little more credit, TV networks!
this show was doomed to be cancelled.
They would’ve done better just have Mario Lopez butt-azz naked for an hour… twitching, flexing his azz.
i would’ve watch that!
I wish they’d air the vampire diaries starting from season 1. A lot of new people would jump on board.
WOW…now there’s a real surprise here..this show totally sucked and the premise wasn’t to be believed. Hey Mario, be grateful you got a successful stint on Extra and on Broadway as people seem to be getting tired of you all of a sudden. Good for the CW as this is the first move they made correct so far.
Another Mike Fleiss co-produced bomb!
I agree. One Tree Hill is the only reason I tune in to The CW. The sooner they bring it back, the sooner I’ll pay attention to their other programming.
I don’t remember the last time I turned on fall tv and One Tree Hill wasn’t there. It’s not only my favorite show on The CW, but also my six girlfriends who come over every week to watch. Please please bring it back as soon as possible. Thank you.
Personally, I think the network needs to take note of what’s worked for them and what hasn’t. One Tree Hill (9 seasons) = works. High concept shows like Ringer, work for a few episodes and then they get old… and they certainly have no chance of lasting multiple seasons.
Glad H8R got the ax. When I saw that fat-assed, checker board tranny, Kim Kardashian on it, I knew it had jumped the shark after one episode.
I would have LOVED to see the episode with Kim Kardashian…I loved the concept of this show. Maybe I can catch it online somewhere.
