Disney’s announcement with Netflix this morning extends and expands a current deal, giving the streaming service rights to several shows 30 days after the last episode of the season airs. The one with Amazon is new and includes more than 800 library episodes. Both include prior seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and all episodes of Lost. They also both landed ABC Family’s The Secret Life Of The American Teenager and Phineas and Ferb. Beyond that there are a lot of differences, with Amazon landing prior seasons of Marvel’s animated shows including X-Men Evolution and Netflix getting ABC Studios’ Army Wives. Here’s the release for Netflix:

I have never been interested in Netflix, but seeing how many older ABC shows they are now adding makes me want to consider subscribing. If only they could get new movies on there quickly instead of being so late in adding them, they’d have me subscribed by now…
As a Jon Hamm fan, I’m still with Netflix instant for Mad Men, 30 Rock and SNL. Although I have the blu-rays for MM seasons 1-4, it’s easier to scroll through netflix and watch the episodes which interest me at the moment.
The aforementioned ABC additions aren’t interesting TV.
OMFG ALIAS!!!! Sorry just had a fangasm….
Seriously, when will a streaming company go for the rights to stream shows from the classic TGIF lineup? They’ve all more or less fallen out of syndication. Time to make some money off of them and make me happier.
So, the first season of “Once Upon A Time” will be available on Netflix streaming – commercial free – months before the DVD comes out? Way to kill a franchise before it starts.
With all that money they are saving on that Starz crap they are now spreading it around. Last week The CW this week ABC/Disney.
I thought Netflix was supposed to be out of business by now?
To read some of the comments that are regularly posted here, you’d think they would be.
Yeah, Netflix is a fantastic service. You never have “Very Long Wait”s for newer DVDs and the streaming service from that endless libraries of movies we all have heard of never pixilates.
Don’t listen to everything you hear in the media. It’s great for the price. Heck! I’d pay DOUBLE! TRIPLE! It’s THAT good!!
It’s not just good… Netflix is the greatest!
Tell a friend!
Yay!
All these ABC Family shows, yet they don’t have my favorite guilty pleasures, Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game. I hope that in time Netflix will get them.
NFLX adds more content than it would have ever gotten from Starz … yet stock market punishes the stock. Really shows the “efficiency” of the market.
Disney now owns ALL Marvel cartoons?
I WANT classic disney channel shows (even more recent ones like even stevens), original movies, and the disney-owned TGIF shows (like Boy Meets World) on netflix.
Good news indeed and for the content available, especially for fans of television series, it’s fantastic even for the increased price. The biggest complaints I tend to see are from people who have this notion in their heads that the Netflix streaming library is going to have new release films. Seriously, are you people out of your minds? Do you think there’s a snowball’s chance in Hell that the studios are going to allow any online content provider to eat into the video sales, rentals and VOD/PPV of their new releases? There’s plenty of great films on streaming, they just aren’t brand new. Get over it… really.
As for “The Once Upon A Time” example… oh, brother. The goal for a show that’s currently in production is not to sell a crapload of DVD boxed sets after the first season, it’s to get more eyeballs on the second and so on. What better way to do that than to have those titles available during the hiatus? Seriously, can you get any better of promotion and not to mention they’ve made a chunk of change with no overhead costs from Netflix and Amazon. Do you seriously think that the fate of a new series rests on home video sales? Man, some people are short-sighted.
Netflix has made it pretty clear that they are going to focus on bringing more and more television series to their streaming library, This is a good thing because they’ll always have a better selection with television than movies and that’s what they should focus on.
Oh, and not for nothing, but the full 1080p HD and 5.1 surround available for the PS3 alone make the service worth every penny, especially with TV because you can’r even get 1080p during the regular broadcasts of the shows, even when they are in HD (720p/1080i only with broadcast/cable/satellite).
Omg I love netflix its a great thing my kids love and in my free time I get to catch up on shows I havnt seen in a long time at a moments notice hopefully season 6 of army wives is on there soon
Wish we wouldn’t have to wait until the end of a season to see a series especially Disney Channel for my kids. I can understand a day or two later…not a whole season. That’s where my hesitation is!
Well, I would like to knoow if this deal has been changed because as of today -almost 2 MONTHS after the season finale of ‘Once Upon A Time’ it is still NOT AVAILABLE on Netflix???? I did watch all these during the season but would love to recap and share them with others- why do we have to pay for EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE?
Anyone know when this series might air on Netflix?
So, it’s been almost a year since this deal was announced and I still don’t see Alias on there. I have been a Netflix subscriber for years and I love it. I have watched so many shows from start to finish that I never got a chance to watch while they were airing on television. My kids love it too and I like that they have a just for kids version. But don’t get my hopes up about a show coming and just leave me hanging! Bring Alias to instant streaming!!
They do have pretty little liars. season 1 & 2. And since season 3 is still going on on tv, its not on netflix yet
Once upon a time
