Disney has seen the 3D light following the success of its re-release of The Lion King in the extra dimension, announcing today limited theatrical releases for four more of its animated films: Beauty and the Beast (January 13, 2012), Pixar’s Finding Nemo (September 14, 2012) and Monsters, Inc. (January 18, 2013), and The Little Mermaid (September 13, 2013). The Lion King 3D is about to cross $80 million in domestic box office since it was re-released September 16; it finished third this past weekend domestically, where it is playing in 2,340 theaters. The Monsters Inc. date, meanwhile, comes five months before Disney releases that film’s prequel, Monsters University, on June 21, 2013.

Hold that thought while I go and put on my ‘surprised face’…
okay go! whaaaaaaat?!
No dates yet on 4D and 5D?
Where the fuck is Aladdin?
Exactly what I was thinking.
Yeh, I’m thinking the same thing – there’s a film with great visuals!
Aladdin under-performed on DVD sales, which might be why its not there yet.
I’m glad to see Disney coming back to re-releasing their classic films on the big screen. I love seeing the old Disney classics during their limited releases at the El Capitan, and now people outside of LA can enjoy them on the big screen, too.
I agree! Aladdin is the BEST
I will definitely go see The Little Mermaid which was the last truly timeless Disney animation. The others, I don’t care for.
Agreed. That’s the only one I care for on the list.
B&B is a maybe.
Great – less slots for original movies = less writing, directing, production and acting gigs.
I’d rather see quality movies get re-released into theaters, rather than the crap the studios tend to dump in January and September.
Disney’s pretty smart about putting the re-releases in otherwise slow spots for movie theaters (like they did with “The Lion King” a few weeks ago). Very savvy.
They weren’t going to fill those slots anyway…
I want to see Fantasia in 3D!
fuck yeah
Aladdin would be spectacular in 3D as you know if you’ve ever seen Philharmagic at a Disney park.
At least they are good movies. But no, not into the 3D thing at all.
Will theater owners play these again? How long before there is no window and theaters start closing down. Can anyone explain this to me?
Why are you acting like this is something new? Disney’s done theatrical re-releases numerous times before, even after the movies were out on home video. “Peter Pan” was released three times in theaters (1953, 1982 and 1989), “The Little Mermaid” got a Thanksgiving 1997 re-release, and “101 Dalmatians” got FIVE re-releases. It was only after “The Lion King”‘s disappointing IMAX run that Disney stopped doing theater re-releases.
There’s a marked difference between experiencing a movie at home and on the small screen, compared to a big-screen show in a theater auditorium.
Lion king bested such notable classics as What’s Your Number, Dream House, Abduction, Killer Elite, Straw Dogs, and I Don’t Know How She Does It. That’s six movies that still existed and weren’t replaced by a re-release. There’s room for both. Perhaps the answer is making those other films better quality so people don’t automatically run to a movie they’ve already seen in order to avoid the dreck.
And with all these 3D films coming out in the dumping ground months of January and September, I welcome the change. At least there will be something worthwhile to see. I’d certainly prefer to see Beauty and the Beast re-released than have Dimension make another Spy Kids movie.
I’m sick of the 3D conversions, but it would be cool to see some of these on the big screen again. And perhaps this will keep the studio occupied long enough to spare us from a “Cars 3.”
Re-releasing films into theaters was a common practice before the arrival of VHS. While it makes less sense to viewers that only go to the theater for the first weekend of a huge spectacle, it makes more sense for people who enjoy the cinematic experience in itself. However, I do quibble a bit with the Pixar films, which are relatively recent. Why not re-release Snow White, Dumbo, or Pinocchio?
Maybe if the run of 3D re-releases continues to be successful, maybe we’ll get a re-release of older titles. But the only ones I would pay to see would be “Peter Pan” and “Sleeping Beauty.”
Honestly, the 1990s Renaissance films and the Pixar brand are what people see when they immediately think Disney animation.
“Honestly, the 1990s Renaissance films and the Pixar brand are what people see when they immediately think Disney animation.”
When people think “Disney Animation”, they only think of the Menken movies and Pixar?
Mickey Mouse just called and he wants to kick your #@$. Bambi, Dopey, and Baloo are coming over with him. Cinderella is going to film the fight and put it on YouTube.
Seems like Mermaid would be more challenging since it was painted on cels and shot on film. Beauty and Lion King were colored and “shot” in the computer….seems like having all the assets already digital would lend itself toward an easier 3D conversion. Still – I’m interested to see how it comes out. Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie.
i’ll be willing to see beauty and the beast and the little mermaid. two of my favorites growing up. its not really about the 3D for me though. I could care less. I just think it’d be fun to see those two classics in theaters again.
Same here! I couldn’t care less about the 3D aspect but I’d love to see The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and also Aladdin in theaters again. Those were my favorite Disney films growing up. I still listen to the soundtracks for all of them
Well funny you should say that since, Beauty and the Beast was originally slatted for a 3 week limited theatrical release last year, before Rich Ross canceled it shortly after taking over at Disney, then it was scheduled for a 2 week re release around valentines this year. then he canceled again, cause his GUT said there just isnt a theatrical market for it, so they were just going to stick it on video instead. Then a few months latter Lion King 3D was announced for a 3D Bluray release, and El cap was able to get an exclusive 2 week engagement of it along with B&B prior the the bluray releases, the pre sales soared, and next thing you know Lion King gets its 2 week limited run announced. nothing for B&B. B&B opens to sell out crowds and atleast 80 percent capacity shows for its 2 week engagement and then Lion King opens wide in first place and stays #1 for 2 weeks. You know Rich Ross is kicking himself right now for bumping B&B limited release 2 times now.
hence the now january 13th release of B&B 3d
B&B has been released in Blu-Ray 3D yesterday! I own it, and it’s one of the best 3D I have seen so far!
Which is too bad, really. B&B’s 20th anniversary is November 13th, 2011, and now it will pass and Disney won’t be able to reap the novelty “Twentieth Anniversary Limited Engagement” benefits.
yawn. wake me up when they do hunchback of notre dame
THIS. Too bad it’ll never happen.
Finding Nemo will be AMAZING in 3D. I’m all for it.
Because that so much easier than making good new movies.
Sad to see Disney flogging the old Katzenberg successes instead of making original movies. I thought Lasseter was supposed to turn that place around? Oh well.
Everyone posting here is correct.
What about Hercules? I re-watched it yesterday. I think it would be great in 3D.
Does Who Framed Roger Rabbit have rights issues or is it just not “Disney” enough?
It was released through Disney’s Touchtone label, but it is also with Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Spielberg is catching the 3D bug with Tin Tin, and producer Robert Zemeckis also loves the format (Beowulf, Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, Mars Needs Moms). With all the live action and animation in Roger Rabbit, it would look great with a conversion.
Great news. I just wish The Little Mermaid was being released sooner. I don’t even like 3D but I’d pay to see that one on the big screen again.
Really? You’d rather watch a fucking DVD in 3D than an original movie?
There’s this new great thing called a hone theater. You should check into it.
JTT and Matthew Broderick are probably relieved to finally be getting a paycheck again…albeit in the form of royalties.
What about The Incredibles in 3D….DUHHHH!!
A Bug’s Life anyone?
How about an Incredibles 2 instead?
Recycling is good for the planet anyway, I guess.
Does this mean they’ll finally release Finding Nemo on Blu-ray? They’ve been promising it for years with no planned release date.
Yes. Beauty and the Beast’s 3D Blu-ray came out yesterday. Monsters Inc. already has a Blu-ray out, but this is a way to prepare for Monsters University. The Little Mermaid’s release corresponds for when it was about to be “released from the vault” on home video anyway, so Finding Nemo’s two-week run will be in preparation of its Blu-ray release.
