Disney is taking another week of prep time before getting underway on The Lone Ranger. Production will begin on February 13. The Gore Verbinski-directed Johnny Depp-starrer has been locked for a May 31, 2013 release. When the film came back online, it was going to start February 6. The Lone Ranger was originally supposed to get underway this fall for a December 21, 2012 release, but all that changed when Disney shocked Hollywood by unplugging the film over fears that its budget could reach $275 million. It came back around with a budget closer to $215 million.

$215 million? For the Lone Ranger? Seriously? Mmmmkay. At least it’s not a quarter billion for Battleship.
When the team that brought in a franchise that grossed over 3 billion dollars, you make this kind of investment.
I can just see the script pitch…
Executive – “This is kinda boring, can we get some monsters – weren’t there werewolves in those Twilight movies? Can we get some of those?”
Writer(s) – “Sure, you know the Lone Ranger uses SILVER bullets after all..!”
Executive(s) – (crickets)(blank faces)(few minutes elapses) “What about this Tonto character, can we make him a sassy kid, or maybe a hooker with a heart of gold? What’s with this Native stuff – can he be a funny Mexican instead – Cheech Marin could be his dad or something….we got a holding deal with Cheech?”
Writer(s) – “What about…..Jack Sparrow in buckstitch leggings – we’ll just take some of the Captain Jack jokes we cut form POTC and write them for Tonto. Johnny’s gonna play him like that anyways.”
Executive(s) – “Are they funny jokes?”
Writer(s) – “Does it matter?”
so who’s playing the lone ranger?
Agreed. They might as well call it “The Loan Ranger!”
