OSCARS: Eddie Murphy Says He Isn’t Doing “Any Of Those Crazy Dance Numbers”
Eddie Murphy has never been one to mince words — if you could get him to sit down for an interview. And he has plenty to say about himself on several fronts (but not on any of the questions that have been off-limits forever) in Rolling Stone. But it’s good. Beverly Hills Cop IV? “They’re not doing it,” he says. “What I’m trying to do now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley’s son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit. I’d do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right. It was trying to force the premise. If you have to force something you shouldn’t be doing it.” Agreed. The Oscars and the impression that he left the ceremony in a huff when Alan Arkin won best supporting actor for Little Miss Sunshine over Murphy’s work in Dreamgirls? Arkin’s was “a great performance,” Murphy says. “That’s just the way the shit went. He’s been gigging for years and years, the guy’s in his seventies. I totally understood and was totally cool.” What was hard to take, he suggests, was other people suddenly coming over to him while “I’m just chilling” and ever so earnestly expressing their condolences. “I didn’t have sour grapes at all. That’s another reason I wanted to host the show – to show them that I’m down with it.” Murphy also touches on other stuff. For one thing he’s giving family movies a rest — maybe for good. “I don’t have any interest in that right now.” A return to standup comedy? “If I ever get back onstage, I’m going to have a really great show for you all,” he says. “It comes up too much for me to not do it again. It’s like, when it hits me, I’ll do it, eventually.”

Glad to see he’s not doing BHC4. I would love to see him host SNL and try out some stand up.
It’s too bad his time on SNL is one of the “off-limits” questions. I’ve always wondered why.
What are some of the other off limits questions?
“Giving family movies a rest – maybe for good.”
Thanks from a grateful nation.
I sometimes wish these Hollywood stars didn’t make as much money as they do because then they would have to work for a living. Murphy has a lot of talent. He should have won the Oscar for Dreamgirls, and his dual performance in Bowfinger was astounding. I wish he was more hungry so we could see more performances like that from him!
Hear-hear on the kudos for Murphy’s performance in “Bowfinger”, he’s top notch in that very funny film.
True dat. His performance in BOWFINGER is kind of amazing.
No, I disagree. He didn’t deserve even a nomination for Dreamgirls but if they ever nominated comedy performances, his work in both Bowfinger & Nutty Professor definitely deserved it. I don’t understand why they poo-poo his character work. It’s so brilliant sometimes.
Your opinion…
He was great in Dreamgirls.
He’s coming across as pretty unlikable in these media appearances for TOWER HEIST…
I know a lot of people who will be happy to hear that Eddie’s letting the “BH Cop” franchise die. I’m not one of those people. I think he’s still got a great Axel Foley movie in him.
I read this treatment online in someone’s blog (http://beverlyhillscopiv.blogspot.com/) and it’s pretty cool. He was trying to get it into Eddie’s hands and, though it wasn’t particularly original, in the grand scheme… it doesn’t have to be. It still sounds cool, has a contemporary feel and would pay enough of an homage to the two (I don’t count part 3) earlier films while updating it. John Ashton looked exactly the same in “Gone Baby Gone,” and Judge Reinhold definitely could use a gig. Toss in the hot Korean girl and you’ve got my $9 bucks.
I personally think the idea of Axel having a son is lame. “BH Cop” isn’t meant for tv… or a PG-13…
Come on, Eddie. Track this dude down from his blog, give the guy some notes and get 4th movie made!
Saw him do stand-up at Universal Amphitheater twice about 20 years ago. Was so aggressively funny that I was crying in pain laughing. When he’s on it…it’s the shit. Been a while. I hope he still has it in him.
I wish hed make another Beverly Hills Cop…doesnt seem that hard to come up with a decent script? Guess not tho, we’ll see on the TV idea.
If you actually saw Dreamgirls yourself and are not parroting other people’s bullshit opinions, you’d know that Eddie indeed got robbed. It was a transformative performance, while Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine basically played himself.
Liking this new charm offensive from Eddie. I’d pay to see him do stand-up again. Beverly Hills Cop TV show, though? Lame idea.
Yes , Eddie Murphy deserved Oscar nominations for Bowfinger, Nutty Professor, and also Coming to America. I hate that the Academy very rarely recognizes brilliant comedic performances ( Also include Bill Murray on this list .) . We all know comedy performances are more challenging than dramatic performances. I could never see Sean Penn, Daniel Day-Lewis, Gary Oldman, or Ryan Gosling give the performance that Murphy gave in Bowfinger, Nutty Professor , or Coming to America – not even close . And, I read an article or saw a program where Sean Penn stated Eddie deserved Oscar recognition for Nutty Professor.
FINALLY someone else that recognizes the brilliance of Coming to America.
Beverly hills cop was the number one r rated gtossing comedy for decades. I really hope he reconsiders this is not a show for tv. If it works for tv, why wouldn’t it work for the movies, all Beverly hills cop fans speak up!!!!!!
He needs to do some stand-up!
Feed him a smorgasbord of the finest trannies in the world
