EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has preemptively acquired The Mountain, a spec script by Helen Childress that Ben Stiller will develop to direct. Stiller and his Red Hour partner Stuart Cornfeld will produce. It’s a re-team for Stiller and Childress, who wrote Reality Bites. The project is a horror story based on characters from Summer, the novel by Edith Wharton. Set in the early 1900s, The Mountain revolves around a young woman who struggles to confront her destiny after stumbling upon a mysterious object that forces her to examine the secrets of her past. It’s a sophisticated horror premise in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby. Stiller and Childress are also developing an adaptation of the children’s book The Snowy Day under his Fox deal. Stiller continues to work on a remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty at Fox that he’ll direct and star in. He’s shooting the Akiva Schaffer-directed comedy Neighborhood Watch with Jonah Hill and Vince Vaughn for Fox.
Original Artists-repped Childress also scripted Mother’s Confidential at Paramount and Allison’s Starting To Happen for Sandra Bullock and Warner Bros.

Stiller is 4 for 4 with directing. I have loved every movie he has directed, even The Cable Guy which is grown on me a ton over the years. Now if only he picked better movies to star in….
I’ve worked with Ben. He is a horrible — ODIOUS — person to work with.
None of the the “fun” that he tries so strenuously to project on screen.
Dreadful experience. And, fess up, I’m not the only one . . .
He was absolutely dreadful to Amy Adams during “Night at the Museum.” Ben Stiller is self-conscious and neurotic.
I’ve heard the same thing from people who have worked on films with him. Really terrible.
Wow. When did Helen Childress start writing again? I remember her as the 20 year old prodigy who wrote Reality Bites, a first script, as far as I know, oh so many years ago. Good for her!
Good for Helen Childress. Such a talent.
Sorry that she has to work with such a loathsome no talent as Ben Stiller. He and his partner Stuart Corncrap are truly odious people.
“The Cable Guy” is a very underrated film. This was not recognized because of the record breaking salary paid to Jim Carrey. Everybody was gunning for it before it opened and therefore it was never judged on its own merits. Stiller is a smart guy who understands what makes a movie – any movie – last. In terms of success as an actor/director I don’t see why he can’t be a Redford or a Beatty – both also pegged as very difficult guys from time to time. Maybe thinking like both an actor and a director at the same time has something to do with that. Not everybody can be Eastwood. The project being discussed here sounds very interesting. Sounds like it may have some great roles to cast. I hope it works out. Red Hour has excellent taste. Catch their Sherman Brothers doc. It’s fascinating. Just great.
“The Cable Guy”? Eh.
“The Plumber” by Peter Wier, is the much better film; having actors act like humans, not cartoons helps.
I’m sorry if Stiller is a dick. We’ve all worked for an ass at some time or another. However, if being a dick gets him to keep putting out good films (as a director), so be it.
Get a grip. Ben isn’t any more or less sensitive than anyone else who has tens of millions of dollars or responsibility riding on his shoulders. He undoubtedly compensates for a wilder lifestyle he had in his past, and for decades now has shown focus and determination as both a dad and decent man who makes one of the most difficult forms of entertainment –comedy. Personally, I like Ben’s super-serious side, and actually prefer his dramatic turns as an actor and director. As for Helen, she is gifted, and knows that Ben will bring out the best in her, and not allow her to settle for anything less than her most amazing ideas, dialogue and story adaptation of the novels they have chosen.
