With a November 1 deadline looming, News Corp. today purchased a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times sports section warning DirecTV customers that the satcaster was poised to drop nine networks if Fox’s dispute with DirecTV isn’t settled by month’s end. The full-color ad featured the heavy-handed banner ‘GAME OVER’ along with game pictures of USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins football and Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks ice hockey, all of which are threatened should the regional sports networks Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket be dropped. The ad then lists the networks that DirecTV could force to go dark: FS West, Prime Ticket, FX, Speed, National Geographic Channel, Fox Soccer, Fox Deportes, Fuel TV and Fox Movie Channel. “And soon,” the advertisement continues, “you could even lose Fox 11 and My 13,” specifically targeting viewers in Southern California. The Times ad then implores sports fans to “Get direct with DirecTV” by logging onto KeepMyNets.com or calling 866-KEEP-MY-NETS. As reported Thursday by Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva, DirecTV claims in its statement that Fox is seeking a 40% increase in its license fees.

I remember last year when I started seeing very similar ads telling me that my TV provider/employer DISH Network was going to lose all the FOX channels, even the locals. At the same time FOX was doing the same thing to Cable Vision. As contracts and agreements come to an end companies will always try to work out a more favorable deal. FOX bullies TV providers in to charging their customers more. Those customers are the fans, the TV watchers, the people that keep FOX on the air. I really don’t like seeing FOX use people as leverage. When it comes to Directv there are some questions. With their every day fees so high already, how much more will their customers have to pay?
I do think it’s more then a little funny that Directv is in this possession. Last year while DISH and others negotiated with FOX, DTV spent millions trying to lure customers to switch. Now the table has turned on Directv, I wonder how they will keep those customers when FOX was the original draw in the first place.
How nice for the Los Angeles Times. With their Hollywood advertising in the tank, maybe News Corp. will keep them alive a little longer. Why settle for the Sports Section when they can buy the entire front page?
And they think an ad in the LA Times will sway DirecTV viewers?
Seems like a fight between Rupert M and John Malone with Chase as the mercenary against his old company. Why do i need to be involved?
Since fox owned directv not that long ago I find this especially distasteful. Fox can get bent.
Noooo, how will I watch the bizarre kinky mess that is American Horror Story on FX?
So far Fox isn’t making much of a case to stay tuned: Terra Nova, New Girl, House, American Horror Story and Glee.
Exactly. I say its time we all give FOX the finger and say no thanks.
… And hockey and college football. No thanks.
Whatever. Work out your problems children.
This is like two guys in the prison shower arguing about which one gets to make you their lover. No matter who wins, you’re going to feel pain.
I wonder if Directv is going to issue credits to its customers who are not receiving the channels they paid for, I DOUBT IT
I don’t care about these Fox channels; I don’t watch them
But I am counting the days till my Directv contract expires. It was the worst decision I ever made. They don’t care about customers.
Any company that is advertising free hD for new customers and refuses to give me the same deal is stupid
Cable and satellite has just gotten too expensive,..and IM tired of paying for channels I don’t watch. I wonder how much cheaper my bill would be without 10 ESPN channels – Ive never watched a single one.
And I for one could do without Fox News too
And why do I have about 20 Christian Channels but I can’t get any reception on the one Jewish channel>
I will go for over the air HD channels and internet tv…
Yeah! They don’t even have an order number for JLTV! Although I don’t mind “the Christian Channels,” TBN and the Mormon channel run some cool old movies. And DTV should get some corporate props for carrying LINKTV.
FX hasn’t been that inspiring lately and NatGeo is, well, home of the Adult Baby.
My issue with DTV is that it’s become too f*cking expensive. As a previous commenter mentioned, I’m probably paying for a lot of sports I don’t watch. And I feel like “new customers” are getting offers that faithful customers aren’t getting.
I agree they don’t care about their customers but where would you go? TimeWarner Cable or Dish Network? They twice as bad! Good luck with those rabbit ears, which I doubt you would go that route and spare me if you say “I’ll watch my shows on the net” who really does that seriously. We are all F*&$ed.
I CAN’T LOSE MY13!!!! WAIT, WHAT IS MY13??
The promise was hundreds of channels of entertainment (once upon a time), the reality is hundreds of channels with programing I don’t want, re-runs or reality programs (which I also don’t want). Speed TV once was good, now it is just an arm of NASCAR and junk programing. Fox, except for Justified (and even that wasn’t as good the second season) can go away. In short, I am about ready to jettison Direct TV and just go dark. Not because of this spat between them and Fox. But because I turn on the TV, click through the channels (yes hundreds) and can not find one lousy thing to watch. So much for the progress and the promise.
Nothing new here. This happens EVERY year around this time, usually between either DirecTV, DISH, or one of the cable companies and any number of content providers. Full-page ads go up and a deal is reached at the eleventh hour.
But rest assured that when corporations argue over money, it is the PUBLIC that will end up getting SCREWED.
we can not lose sons of anarchy. we watch every tues. dont know what we will do.
I support this 100% – I do not want my bills increasing. I am tired of all of this. Fox is greedy. Pull the channels.
LOL How FITTING, since NEWS CORP. owns the L.A. TIMES I’m sure putting a full page ad probably didn’t cost them a dime for this scare tactic. Who needs these channels/network. They have the worst programming ever! I can just imagine all the tea(baggers) calling to complain they need their FOX network. I hope DirecTV does not budge and keep them off my dish. I’m behind DirecTV and vote not to ever have them on.
We haven’t watched the crap coming out of FOX stations in years. Who cares!
Point the First: News corp is evil and I openly wish that very bad things would happen to Rupert Murdoch. He has made a living drumming up fear in the masses an that’s all this is.
I had a terrible service experience with time Warner not coming out to install cable for me at my new apartment because the people who lived their before me had bootlegged it. Long story short I have Directv coming out tomorrow morning between 8 and noon I’m getting an awesome package including HBO and show time, 40+ Hd channels a DVR and sports blah blah blah for like 43 dollars a month but if I lose FOX I’ll drop it in a heart beat and figure out how to boot leg my own time Warner
I’m gonna miss Megan Fox. She’s hot.
I watch Fox Sports, Speed, FMC, and NG channels very often. So I will miss them if they are pulled from DTV. Everyone involved will lose something in this mess. But it will be us, the customers, who finally decide what happens. DTV and News Corps are no diffrent than any parties involved in a dispute where the third party is the viewers and payers of DTV subscription fees. We are taken for granted by both DTV and News Corp. While we can complain, our only effective reprisal is to not watch or subscribe. Eventually, fewer viewers will erode channel ratings, then advertising income will drop, then News Corps’ revenue will drop. The bottom line: I am a customer and I will decide. I will survive, just as I did before I even had cable. I may not be happy about it, but I do have a limit on how much I will spend on TV entertainment.
I never liked direcTV you guys suck
These are the times I am happy that my provider/employer DISH Network made a long term agreement with the FOX channels and I don’t have to worry about losing them. I feel bad for the customers of DirecTV because I know I would be extremely upset if I lost FX.
