Los Angeles, CA, October 7, 2011 – Aaron Eckhart will play ADAM FRANKENSTEIN in the Lakeshore Entertainment, Hopscotch Features and Lionsgate production of I, FRANKENSTEIN, commencing in Australia in January. The film was written and is to be directed by Stuart Beattie (director of Australia’s breakout hit TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN,
and writer of such films as PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, G.I. JOE, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT and COLLATERAL), and is based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the UNDERWORLD franchise. Lionsgate will distribute the film in the United States, Lakeshore will handle international sales and E1/Hopscotch will distribute in Australia. U.S. release is slated for February 22, 2013.
I FRANKENSTEIN is a modern-day epic: Frankenstein’s creature, ADAM, has survived to present day due to a genetic quirk in his creation. Making his way to a dark, gothic metropolis, he finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans. As writer/director, Stuart Beattie said, “Mary Shelly’s story is about the creation of the first human being. This is the story about that being becoming human.”
“This story is all about what it means to be human, and there could be no more achingly human performance than the one Aaron gave in our own RABBIT HOLE. We are so excited to see what he will bring to this role.” said Lionsgate’s co-COO and Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake of the production. “This is a wonderfully imaginative script and we are looking forward to seeing it brought to life by a talented filmmaker, and to bringing this story to our loyal genre fans.”
“We’ve tremendously enjoyed making our UNDERWORLD franchise films and we are looking forward to working with Stuart and our partners at Hopscotch and Lionsgate to create a new world for a legendary character,” said Lakeshore’s Tom Rosenberg, adding “We know that Aaron, with his proven range, depth and intelligence, is going to make an iconic ADAM.”
Troy Lum of Hopscotch said, “We have wanted to work with Stuart on a big film in Australia and when we had the opportunity earlier this year to expand our relationship with Lakeshore on the creation of a potential franchise, it all came together.”
Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, Andrew Mason (who produced Beattie’s TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN) and Richard Wright of Lakeshore are producing the film, with Hopscotch’s Troy Lum and Kevin Grevioux as executive producers.
Michael Paseornek, Lionsgate’s President of Motion Picture Development and Production will be shepherding the project at the studio. The deal was negotiated on behalf of Lionsgate by Wendy Jaffe, EVP Business & Legal Affairs for Acquisitions, and by Rob McEntegart, Senior EVP of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group. Beattie and Eckhart are repped by CAA.

Can’t wait to see how much fun the marketing team has with this one. Loved the Daybreakers marketing campaign, and it’s been too long since LGF has fed us an iconic genre movie marketing campaign.
Beattie’s a huge talent but I’m not getting the whole “first human being becoming a human being” angle. Huh?
Stuart Beattie might do “Frankenstein”‘s creator, Mary Shelley, the courtesy of spelling her name correctly. In fact, it would be even more thoughtful for him to refer to her by the name under which she wrote, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. May her name live on.
This looks amazing! He gave depth to two-face in batman so I can’t wait to see what he does in Frankenstein. It’s also refreshing to finally see a modern version of Frankenstein. Eckhart is going to nail it. Nice to see some smart casting from the studios every once in a while.
I have been waiting for news like this! I have no doubt that this will be a great film, especially with Eckhart taking on the role! February 2013 needs to be here already! I am so excited to see a “gothic metropolis” on the big screen!!!
What a cool casting choice! If Eckhart’s killer double performance as Harvey Dent / Two-Face in the Dark Night was any indication, it’s safe to say this movie’s gonna be awesome.
This is definitely some exciting news! I’ve been a fan of Eckhart for a while now and he seems like the perfect choice for this roll. I can’t wait to see what they do with this film and what Eckhart does with the character because it’s bound to be great!
OHHH MAH GOD – Frankenstein’s monster turned into a Nice Guy.
You gotta love that pitch, and these bozos bought it. You’d be better off investing your money in a ponzi scheme. You have to be kidding; that this is the best project you’ve seen? I don’t care how many great talents are attached, this has ‘Dopey Drive’ written all over it. I look forward to seeing this wind it way thru production & release. It’s about as apetizing as a remake of CONAN, and we all know how that went.
I feel sorry for Aaron Eckhart – he’s a genuinely great talent.
If you want to see how this should be done, just pick up Dean Koontz’s FRANKENSTEIN series. Lays it all out.
The guy’s a big writer, but it seemed like LG was trying to justify their choice a little of him as director with their brief bio on him. Could be interesting or it could be…really fucking corny.
This would of been a perfect project for someone like Alex Proyas…
So says Proyas’ publicist…
Amen. Koontz’s re-imagining of the saga was brilliant and chilling. As much as I like Aaron this story doesn’t sound too scary – and anything with the name “Frankenstein” in the title better be either scary or hilarious. This version seems likely to be neither… Which means it will be a flop at the box office no matter how “good” it is.
When is hollywood gonna stop reviving tired old monsters. This script should be allowed to die gracefully. F***ing boooorrriiing!
So what’s the difference between this version and Levy’s? Did Landis’ kid pen this script?
Beattie should stick to what he does best: writing. He’s a boring director.
This is a WONDERFUL idea.I beleve your sure to earn a new pair of glasses with this project. The idea is GENIUS!!!!!!!
