MIPCOM: Those of you who cheered when Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren went mano-a-mano in Roland Emmerich’s 1992 sci-flick Universal
Soldier will be pleased to know that it is being rebooted as a TV series. Damian Kindler (Stargate, Sanctuary) is writing the show, which will be produced by FremantleMedia North America, the U.S. arm of the London-based TV producer. Allen Shapiro and Craig Baumgarten, who produced the original movie, will be executive producers. Shapiro is currently chairman of TV Guide Network and was a founder of Mosaic Media Group, while Baumgarten’s movie credits include Hook and Shattered Glass. Baumgarten has a long track record as a studio executive including stints at Paramount, Columbia, Fox and Lorimar.
Meanwhile, Fremantle has hired Charles Segars, creator and exec producer of both National Treasure movies, to create Blood & Treasure (working title), a TV
drama series about two brothers who go around the world solving crimes and unearthing some of the world’s greatest secrets — kind of cops-meet-The Da Vinci Code. Rob Wright (Law & Order) has written the series bible and first hour-long episode. Fremantle Media Enterprises, the producer’s rights arm, will be coaxing international buyers at MIPCOM. Blood & Treasure comes out of FME’s first-look deal with U.S. TV producer Landscape Entertainment (Medical Investigation).

NO MORE REMAKESSSSS!
Meh. At least Relic Hunter had Tia Carrere to look at.
It will be interesting to see which Universal Soldier universe, the series takes place in. Nearly every film is set in an alternate universe/reality and Universal Soldier: A New Dimension will be coming out eventually. It would be good if they include special guest appearances by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Michael Jai White, Bill Goldberg and Scott Adkins.
Kindler is a tremendous talent. Sanctuary is fantastic, and his feature which his reps are presently packaging, El Dorado, is one of the best scripts I’ve read in a long time.
Please Stop! Come up with original ideas!!!
Enough with the remakes. Do studios really think there’s some great brand recognition, because there isn’t. Even if someone heard of Universal Soldier is doesn’t make them want to see it. It’s so short sided and weak and contributing to the low point of movie making today. I mean who was the fucking genius who thought remaking Straw Dogs was a good idea when the original film sucked? Enough already.
Who said remake? its being adapted to a TV series, that has nothing to do with the films. Just like stargate, terminator, transporter, this too will be on tv, thats all there is to it. Seeing how well spartacus and game of thrones are doing they should think of doing a Conan tv series.
A cable Conan series has the potential to be amazing. (Not like the syndicated one from the 90s.) Cue the cries of, “the movie tanked!” and “not another remake!” but those cries will come from people who don’t understand the potential of actually adapting Robert E. Howard’s work, which we’ve never seen before on screen. You’re right; it really would have the potential to be another Game of Thrones kind of success.
Segars is a tool. He did not create “NT”.., is was more Oren Aviv’s idea. And he is NOT a writer so to say in the headline he was hired to “pen” this is incorrect – read the body of your article where is says “Rob Wright (Law & Order) has written the series bible and first hour-long episode”. Let’s not give Segars anymore credit than he is due as this is what he does, ride the coattails of others for his benefit.
I rented “Universal Soldier: Regeneration” on a random Saturday and was shocked at how a DTV movie was so well directed. It was way better than I expected for that kind of a movie and with it being the 100th sequel in the series.
And the fight choreography was pretty good. They should leave it alone. The last film brought back Van Damme and Lundgren and ended it well. Why make it a TV show that won’t even last a season? Again, the last film was DTV… Not like there’s too much demand for the property to keep going…
Hmmm, a television remake of a B movie? I’ll pass.
