EXCLUSIVE: Ellen Pompeo is embarking on a producing career. The Grey’s Anatomy star has launched her own shingle, Calamity Jane, which has sold its first project to ABC. The untitled drama, which has received a script commitment, is being written by Mike Sussman, co-creator of TNT’s upcoming drama series Perception starring Eric McCormack. The drama is partially based on Laura Blumenfeld’s June article in ELLE Magazine about the female agents on the Secretary Of State’s security detail. The TV project will revolve around Diplomatic Security special agents who travel the world protecting American officials on diplomatic missions and will explore the personal and professional challenges these young women and men face while taking on one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. Sussman will write the drama and will executive produce with Pompeo for ABC Studios. Pompeo, who plays the title role on ABC/ABC Studios’ veteran medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, is in the last year of her current contract for the show.

It’s about time someone is highlighting the agency that protects America’s interests overseas. Seems as if it would be a difficult task – diplomacy while maintaining security.

I could be wrong, but….she hasn’t ever directed an ep of Grey’s, has she? It seems sort of odd that she’d leap to this. I understand directing does not = producing…..but it just seemed to me that one of the other GA actors who have directed (Kevin McKidd, Chandra Wilson) would land this first.
Courtney Cox is a producer. The only thing she has ever directed is a 20 minute short in 2008. She will now direct an episode of Cougar Town which her production team is a part of. So no, you don’t have to be a director in the business to produce television/motion pictures. I wish her well. Pompeo has been fantastic and completely overlooked in her 8 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and it’s my hope she will stay at least one more season beyond this. The show will never be the same without her.

It’s nice to have a plan to move forward, but personally … I hope Grey’s is around for a long time. Love the depth and complexity of all the characters and how they change and evolve over time just living the life.
