Tonight’s Monday Night Football game will not be preceded by Hank Williams Jr’s famous opening song. ESPN pulled the opening after Williams compared President Obama to Adolf Hitler this morning on Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends. ”While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football,” ESPN said in a statement. “We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.” ”All My Rowdy Friends” has been the MNF theme song on both ESPN and ABC for the past 20 years.
Williams says his comment about Obama was misunderstood. On Fox & Friends he said he thinks House Speaker John Boehner playing golf with President Obama “would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu. … In the shape this country is in?” (Boehner and Obama played golf together this summer during the debate over the budget crisis.) Williams released the following statement through his publicist: “My analogy was extreme — but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me — how ludicrous that pairing was. They’re polar opposites and it made no sense. They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the president.”

Poor choice for the analogy, but it doesn’t sound like he was making a comparison.
Yes, he was. If you say “would be LIKE,” then you are comparing. Glad I could clear that up for you.
Look, the rule is very simple folks: Unless they are Hitler DON’T call them Hitler. Ever.
These goofballs are so crazed that a –GASP!– black person is in “their” white house that they can’t stop venting their petty hate.
Disney made the right call.
End of story.
It was a stupid statement from a drunk country music has been. That being said he didn’t actually compare Obama to Hitler. In no way did he say Obama is an evil Jew hating monster.
Oh REALLY Mr language police WEEERE YOOOU offended? Oh poor baby .Hank is protected under something called the First Amendment. Perhaps you have heard of it.If not it states that in layman’s terms .We can say what ever the hell we want! So I will say this to you.You and others like you do not deserve to live in this country.Take your health care your Affirmative Action your Anti bullying laws Gay marriage and your Zio- Disney Channel pack them in a suit case and get the hell out of my country.I hear Norway is beautiful this time of year.
Jon,
Yes free speech is guaranteed in the Constitution. According to you, though, anyone practicing it, who doesn’t conform to your narrow view of the world, should leave the country.
When the Dixie Chicks made a comment about President Bush, the argument then, by those who refused to play their music, was the band had the right to say what they wanted but they must prepared to take the consequences. The same is true for Hank Williams, Jr. Maybe he should follow the advice given to the Dixie Chick by the same people and “just shut up and sing.”
You’re right, Norway is lovely this time of the year. Maybe you should go there yourself.
This has nothing to do with the First Amendment. Get a clue and learn what it is actually about. he wasn’t arrested, so no first amendment problems.
And while you are actually becoming a person with a half functioning brain, learn what constitutes an analogy. No one was called Hitler!
Does no one take the SAT anymore? In my day the test was full of analogies. WTF that no one seems to have any idea what they are anymore.
yeah… so crazed about a black man in office that hopefully we get another one – with WAY more respect for our country.
The racist card is SO old…. get over it
His crime was a poor choice of words. It would have been better to state, “Israel and Palestine” or night and day….anytime you invoke the Hitler or Nazi or Jew word, it gets people riled.
what is a “jew word” ?
Money?
I am extremely disappointed with ESPN for their knee jerk, politically correct response to Hank Williams Jr.’s remarks. They’re trampling all over his first amendment rights and in doing that, they’re on the first step down Hitler’s devestating road. My grandparents were immigrants and taught me to do whatever I can to preserve the rights we were granted by the shedding of the patriots blood. I totally disagree with the censorhip of politcal correctness.
NOT a 1st Amendment issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your employer can fire you. the market can retaliate against you. Hear that Dixie Chicks?
While I vehemently disagree with Williams comments, I do not think he should be censured for them. Freedom of speech means people are allowed to say things that offend you. Granted, it is not a denial of his freedom of speech to choose not to do business with him, but it is tantamount to censorship.
Obviously, you’ve never signed a contract with a major studio because “how you carry yourself outside of work” is in there. He ain’t the first and won’t be the last… i mean ignorant racist… to sign a contract… to open his mouth at the wrong time.
They shouldn’t use his music for the opening ever again. Time to call Carrie Underwood… she can write a song called “Make Him Watch Football Before He Cheats”.
Exactly. Just because someone can’t be prosecuted for their opinions, that doesn’t mean his employers or people who sponsor his image or likeness will appreciate the comments. People need to understand the difference.
I think I explained that in my original post. I think that individuals should be allowed to speak publicly without fear of punishment. Would it be fair for you to lose your job because you attended a political protest or rally?
But he is acting as a public spokesman for a major corporation. You don’t think they have the right to control their image?
Freedom of speech doesn’t equal freedom from consequences. While you’re free to say whatever you want, I’m just as free to voice my opposition to it. One coin, two sides.
Some Dude said it perfectly. Nobody is saying he can’t say it. But, there are consequences to your actions and statements. You have the right to scream FIRE in a crowded movie theater but you will end up in jail.
This is only temporary and he’ll be back on the air next monday.
–”Would it be fair for you to lose your job because you attended a political protest or rally?”
Actually, fair or not, in most states it is 100% legal to fire someone for that. Not a lot of people realize that.
–”I think that individuals should be allowed to speak publicly without fear of punishment.”
If you were hired in a public capacity or as a spokesperson, your employer would very firmly disagree with you there.
That “Make Him Watch Football Before He Cheats” joke makes me think free speech is over-rated.
Are these the same guys held on to their wallets while retired players couldn`t get medical coverage & died an early death?
Don’t know for sure, but I think it is ESPN (Disney) who has fired him, not the NFL.
oh so you dont have a right to your opinion the rest of your life..lmao ! you idiots
Why would you call someone a RACIST for comparing Obama to Hitler? And censorship is a denial of free speech. You don’t make any sense at all!
It never ceases to amaze me how few people understand what “freedom of speech” actually means. It means the government can’t censor your speech. Your employer can censor whatever it likes. This is something adults should understand.
The key word here being “adults.” Of which there are very few in the good old USA.
Retraction: I read his further comments on espn and it sounds like he was making an analogy. Comparing any American politician to the nazi mass murderer is either delusional or profoundly ignorant.
I take it you don’t watch Fox News much then, and esp not Glen Beck when he was on.
Then there are a lot of ignorant liberals because they called GW Bush Hitler and a Nazi for 8 years. Oh, I forgot, that is OK. I am sure if Kanye West had Williams intro gig, I am sure he would not have been pulled for saying the same thing about GW. That is the ESPN way.
I’d love for you to find one documented example of someone calling GWB a nazi or Hitler… you can’t. The closest thing you can find is the Dixie Chicks saying they were ashamed to be from the same state as Bush, and having to watch their former fans react by burning their records.
However, I could point you to plenty of tea party members holding signs comparing Obama to a nazi. But I guess when you have the mental capacity of Megan Fox, that’s the best one can come up with…
Are you delusional? People were comparing Bush to Hitler left and right.
One documented example? Here is an ENTIRE website dedicated to keeping a library of Bush is Hitler or a Nazi items: http://semiskimmed.net/bushhitler.html
The site also has an image gallery of protesters holding up signs depicting Bush as Hitler or a Nazi.
Do a Google search. It is there. A big deal was made out of a Democrat group’s GWB/Bush comparison in 2004. There are plenty of articles. And Democrats were most recently doing it in Wisconsin with Scott Walker/Nazi comparisons.
What ever happened to “two wrongs don’t make a right?” Everybody who said Bush was Hitler was an asshole. Everybody who says Obama is Hitler is also an asshole.
Instead of turning every argument into a variation on “I know you are but what am I,” how about we just denounce the assholes and get on with our lives?
Both Reps and Dems are wrong. This country has become too doggone polarized…but it’s been happening for a while.
LOL – College Student just google “Bush Hitler” and you will see plenty of evidence!
@ “Michael” above: Why is it whenever someone says “two wrongs don’t make a right?”, they are typically the one that “wronged” and is now being “wronged”??
It’s like punching someone in the face then immediately saying “Now, two wrongs don’t make a right!”
What a cheap argument.
Why do I get the feeling “Michael” will be the first in line to bash the new president next year?
HaHa, your a college student-what college are you at Bezerkly?
Haha….your language skills are a poor reflection on your level of education. Before you go pointing a finger at “college guy”, let’s take a walk down third grade vocabulary and spelling avenue, shall we??
Lesson: your=this is YOUR problem, or YOUR grammar is really below average
You’re=hyphenated YOU and ARE, like YOU’RE an idiot
Get it?
College educated mom who is annoyed when peeps cannot figure out the differences between there, they’re, and their and your, you’re!
You’re kidding, right?
Rosie O’donnel, George Soros. That took me all of 30 seconds LOL. All you have to do is search. Sorry to get shit stains all over your rose colored glasses.
Imma let you finish…but speech has consequences. You don’t escape them by telling everyone it’s your right to call things as you see them. Yes it is, but you’ll find it hard to get away with unless you’re an 85 year old woman. Kanye West found that out when he criticized Bush and poor little Taylor Swift. Bush isn’t Hitler, Obama isn’t Hitler. Hitler is Hitler.
How about we not diminish what Hitler did by comparing people to him that a)never killed millions in ovens and/or b)are on the other side of the political spectrum. Williams probably doesn’t know enough about Stalin to even get that aspect right (not that Stalin’s comparable to Obama either, meaning we should probably drop the analogies to mass murdering dictators all together). Given the number Stalin murdered, you’d think he’d go for that with greater relish. He knows fascism and Hitler in particular are go to connections to evil which is just lazy. Evil can be much more subtle too. He’s one of the many boys who cried “Hitler.” He knew exactly what he was doing and didn’t at the same time. That’s a special kind of stupid, and it’s his overall ignorance that’s most offensive. Heaven knows I watch football for the intellectual discussions.
@Doug, you are the only one out of all these people who have made any sense. I think what’s good for the goose is also good for the gander. If it had been said about Bush they would’ve just let it slide. But no, everyone gets all freaked because it was said about Obama. I don’t understand that. Why does everyone get all freaked out when it has something to do with Obama?
If he had said it about Bush they WOULD NOT HAVE LET IT SLIDE. I get so sick of these Teabaggers with their false equivalencies and speculations. Bush didn’t get it harder from the media than Obama does. The left wing actors who are vocal about politics are not the ones making the editorial decisions. Those are made by corporations who want to protect their bottom line. Disney is not going to alienate 50% of the public on either side. This really shouldn’t be that hard for you Teatards to understand.
ESPN has hired drug users and wife beaters in the past and now they will stop using this classic song to start Monday Night Football because he said one thing stupid. Sounds to me ESPN went too far with this.
I don’t think he was comparing Obama to Hitler just making a poorly chosen analogy. I think this is extreme. Are all Roseanne reruns being pulled since she called for bankers to be beheaded?
I’m a minority person and I think we’ve taken PC too far.
Espn has the right to represent their production & image in any way they see fit. Personally, the open had lost it’s freshness years ago.
“don’t judge me judge my work”. Some chick named Madonna said that recently. The Tolerance mob strikes again!
Rosanne’s reruns should be pulled for any reason they can find. She’s not funny.
Low-brow home-schooled Fox News fans constantly need to be reminded that Hitler was rightwing, not left. Yes, they will throw the “national socialist” thing at you, hoping you are as dumb as they are, while failing to mention that socialist and national socialist are two very different things. They also fail to mention that Hitler’s main ally in WWII was Benito Mussolini, best known for being the father of fascism, a rightwing ideology.
I assure you NAZIs of the German variety have way more in common with the Democratic Party than the GOP. I am sure that makes you uncomfortable, but that Is the truth.
Please do tell? I don’t recall Democrats (or Republicans) relocating a race of people into concentration camps and killing them? Yes, a harsh comparison but what exactly do you mean? The Hitler analogy is old and tired and no individual or group should be compared to Hitler or the Nazi party unless they are within the realm of genocidal dictatorships.
While Hank Williams Jr. should have free speech, he like you should have genuine facts to back up such comments. Otherwise it’s just song and dance.
Juanito you’re hilarious. Did you learn anything about the 19th century in school? There were plenty of Dem’s and Repub’s who supported genocide. We don’t call them work camps. We call them reservations.
«I don’t recall Democrats (or Republicans) relocating a race of people into concentration camps and killing them?»
FDR (a democrat) put thousands of japanese-americans in… camps during WW2.
Nazis created the SS. Democrats created the KKK.
Mussolini was a socialist before he created fascism.
Why can’t you Republican-types make up your mind? You accuse the Dems of being Nazi-like, which were Fascists, and then say they just want to take all the money away from the rich and give to the poor, which is more like Socialists or Communists. You People can’t get your sh*t straight. No wonder the GOP is in a state of despair, because they are just plain stupid.
Doug- just saying something is THE TRUTH doesn’t make it so. Why not take the time to actually make your argument based on facts. Please, point out exactly how the DNC is like the Nazi party, in any way. Then complete your argument by explaining how the RNC is not like the Nazi party. For me, all this casual reference to Hitler and Nazis only demonstrates the utter ignorance of anyone making the reference to our current president or to the previous one. All these people saying people on the left called Bush a Nazi- I say to you- name ONE CELEBRITY or POLITICIAN who said that or wrote that. Remember the Dixie Chicks- they merely said they were ashamed that Bush was from Texas- and they were dropped from shows, called un-American, etc. Besides that, WHO exactly called Bush a Nazi. Name one person- I dare you- maybe I’m wrong, but I can’t think of one, can you?
That said, Bush was an utter disaster as a president, and I will absolutely vote for Obama again because the Republican candidates and the RNC leadership in the House and Senate continue to promote the exact same ideas (tax cuts for the rich, more war, less regulation, etc.) that failed so miserably under the last Republican administration. Anyway, people like Doug need to be called out.
So Doug, if you care to make a reasoned argument instead of spouting off about the TRUTH, then please take the time and do your best- but you won’t because you can’t. The thing about people like Doug and other Republicans and Tea Party members- they love to spout off opinions as if they are facts, and when you challenge them, they crumble because their hatred of Obama has blinded them and made them incapable of logical, fact-based arguments.
Kurt Vonnegut in his last speech.
* He’s just one celebrity that compared Bush to Hitler. It wasn’t entirely serious, but neither was this. It was pretty stupid, as is this too.
“Please, point out exactly how the DNC is like the Nazi party, in any way.”
Fine, here you go: http://jpfo.org/filegen-a-m/GCA_68.htm
That link documents that Sen. Christopher Dodd’s (democRat) father, Sen. Thomas Dodd (also democRat) based his 1968 Gun Control Act almost word-for-word on the Nazi’s 1938 gun control laws.
I own a printed copy of the Nazi law, with English translation, compared with the Dodd (remember, a democRAT) bill – they’re almost identical.
democRats lifted Nazi law almost word-for-word and passed it into the American law books.
Greedy, thuggish, parasitic, power-mad, useless democRats suck. Just like Nazis suck.
That’s it? That’s all you got? Some dubious connection to a gun control law over 40 years old? Clearly you are a delusional gun nut- with literally hundreds of thousands of gun-related deaths over the last 40 years, many caused by gun owners who were not criminals and who purchased/owned their weapons legally, and this is the sole example you can come up with to support your/Doug’s contention that the Democrats are like Nazis?
There are currently MORE guns in this country than people. We do not have a shortage of guns, just the common sense needed to control their usage. Everyone who wants to own a gun should be required to take and pass a test, no less than someone who wants to drive. I’m guessing you’d object to that- and you wish you could walk around with a AK-47 on your back, and if so, I suggest you move to Afghanistan.
As to how the Republicans are more like the Nazis- I will give you one simple example– invading another county on pretext, which is what Bush did in 2003 in Iraq.
I think Doug might be a speechwriter for Michele Bachmann. I love how sure and confident he was in passing such an asinine statement off as fact. And the way he was talking down to people who are clearly smarter than him was just brilliant.
Maybe Doug should throw his hat in the ring for the GOP nomination?
White House watches Fox & Friends…White House calls Bob Iger…song gets pulled. And if you think that didn’t happen I have a network in Bristol to sell ya.
Wrong.
NFL watches Fox, and Roger Goodell calls Iger to pull the opener. ABC could give a damn about the comment. People in Hollywood say stupid shit all the time. The NFL has to make sure they stay above the political fray because the make big markets in red states and in blue states.
Yep, that’s totally what happened! It had nothing to do with ESPN’s editorial policy or desire to not completely alienate 50-plus percent of its viewers (I’m assuming there are a few on the right who also think Williams is a moron).
Seriously, do you really think the guy who killed bin Laden and is systematically destroying al Qaeda right now gives a shit what some washed-up, obviously intoxicated bumpkin thinks about him? You think his feelings were so hurt that he had to “call Bob Iger”? The Fox & Friends hosts weren’t even taking Williams seriously. Why do you think anyone with half a brain would?
Good work, DrewM. Way to crack the case.
Decent musician. Crappy political commentator. Should we really care so much about what Hank Williams Jr. thinks about politics? Come on, Fox & Friends, that segment was D.O.A. before the Obama/Boehner comment. I guess they needed to fill the right wingnut quota this week. It’s a mystery as to why our U.S. airwaves (alright, cable) are wasted on such unenlightened nonsense. Elevate it, people. Jeez.
It’s about time ESPN got rid of that right wing radical.
Kanye West and Deadmau5 for MNF intro, please!! MNF needs an entire face lift! 2012-13. Replace Tirco with GUS JOHNSON, bring in Brett Favre, however he needs a boat load of broadcasting classes and training. Keep Gruden.
I wish people would get this straight.
If the NFL show started with a song by Hank Williams jr. with lyrics about Boehner and Obama and they stopped using it. (“Yeah! Football football and why are those two golfing!”)Or if they had a song with some sort of political or social agenda in the lyrics and stopped using it… THAT would be censorship.
Saying, we think you’re an insensative jerk and were not using your music anymore is not. That too is free speech.
It’ not like ESPN said don’t run the song because we don’t like songs about rowdy friends.
First off, anyone on fox news has an agenda so I doubt he’s been “misunderstood”. More like he doesn’t want to miss out on the massive royalty payments that he isn’t going to get now. No one else will touch him after this either. Second, he certainly can and should exercise his Free Speech – and any sponsors can also exercise their “Free Speech” (in quotes on purpose) by deciding at any time to pull their sponsorship. Public figures are always called out. When will people learn that Free Speech can come at a cost. Be willing to accept the consequences or just shut up. He looks like a wuss now for saying he was misunderstood.
We went through 8 years of liberals comparing Bush to Hitler and nobody cared. It’s weird how when the R changes to a D suddenly people are up in arms over it.
And comparing Bush or Obama to Hitler is insane. At least Hitler fixed an economy.
Yeah, that last tidbit is really helpful.
Thank you, Lethargic. Why aren’t we talking about all the good things Hitler did?!
Well, the Gypsy (Roma) issue was squelched for about 40 years until they started to recover…now gangs of them are stripping European cities of goods as we speak.
“At least Hitler fixed an economy”….. yeah, imprisoning and murdering millions of Jews really opened up the job market in Germany, didn’t it. The end doesn’t justify the means. EVERYTHING Hitler did is defined by the context in which it was accomplished….his genocidal campaign against the Jews.
Have we gotten this PC? I’m a Tribe member and I don’t find it offensive. It was an analogy about opposites and to compare Boehner to Netanyahu is pretty funny. It was a completely garbled analogy. Everyone chill-ax. He’s a country singer. Who cares?
Right, but did you watch the rest of the clip? I thought the same thing until Williams started saying “there’s a lot of people who agree with me.”
It’s lame to compare someone to Hitler. Period. Whether it’s Bush or Obama (I think it may be apt for Cheney, but that’s off topic). It’s not PC for a company to silence a dumbass with whacko beliefs.
Pull him frim the air after a 20 year run. Well, He pulled himself with a stupid remark, and he deserves what he got. With a viewership like ESPN has, it says a lot about how they would rather not be perceived by their audience; and I don’t blame them one bit for their separation from this kind of foolishness. In the end, he is responsible and should be made to answer for his own stupid answerremarks.
Maybe showbiz entertainers need to shut their traps when they’re not singing.
Quit making excuses for this jerk who caught a bad case of know it all diarrhea of the mouth on talking to the Braindead trio. Hank Jr’s “Are Your Ready for some Football” schtick is played out. It’s not 1995 anymore. And Indy Vs. Tampa? Only hardcore gamblers care about that game.
Why is not OK for “showbiz entertainers” to have opinions but it’s fine for you?
Hank Williams made the wrong analogy. Mao Tse-tung, H? Chí Minh or Joseph Stalin would have made much more sense.
I agree with Hank Williiams that the country is polarized. To Democrats, compromise simply means that Republicans should acquiesce. Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid had no interest in compromise when they held a super majority in congress. Now all of a sudden they want compromise. They called George Bush every name in thebook and imagined his assassination. And now they call for civility.
When we give Republicans a super majority in 2012 they better forget that Democrats exist and push through OUR agenda just like the Democrats did during the first two years of President Zero’s administration.
Wow, could someone be more wrong than Aaronsch? You’re scoring lower than Hank Jr.
You have it COMPLETELY backwards. More Democrats voted for old GW and the GOP’s bills than Republicans have voted for anything the Democrats put forward in 2009-10. You can look it up. (Actually the Blue Dog Democrats, aka Republican Lite, cocked all that up, but that’s another story.) Before the 2010 elections the Obama adminstration CONSTANTLY tried changing legislation to win GOP votes: after they would agree and change the bill to suit certain Republican lawmakers, said lawmakers would then say it wasn’t good enough. Since 2010 the Obama adminstration would REPEATEDLY try to meet the GOP lunatics MORE than halfway, and it was never good enough.
Yours is another fact- and reality-free post right in line with someone from the Fox News Zone.
Haw! Before Fox News came along in ’96 American conservatives had gone through about 45 years of liberal social engineering by the only media outlets available: ABC, CBS, NBC, and later, CNN.
Who can forget the liberal skag Walter Cronkite belting out this anti-war diatribes all the time?? “Golly Martha, if’n Walter’s sayin’ it, it’s gotta be true!”
Thank GOD for Fox News, who beats all the other outlets hands down in the ratings ALL THE TIME.
“To Democrats, compromise simply means that Republicans should acquiesce.”
Yeah, the Teabaggers in Congress have been more than willing to reach across the aisle. That’s a good point. They certainly didn’t get our credit rating downgraded by being petulant obstructionists. Oh, wait…
On the other hand, the Mad Max fan in me would love to see what the Republicans can do with a super majority. And what is “YOUR agenda” by the way? I mean, besides giving more money to billionaires and destroying the middle class?
Glad you asked. FIRST thing on our agenda when the GOP takes the WH and Senate next year is to repeal every reparations-based deed, starting with Obamacare, then slash social welfare spending to the bone, then prepare the nation for the resulting social apocalypse. When those fatherless welfare parasites no get those free entitlements, all hell will break loose. That’s when the good law-abiding citizens who have readied themselves can take over.
It would be like a star of an ABC show using a word he shouldn’t use on a set, then using the same word at an awards show. Disney canned him. Disney has no tolerance for this kind of crap. They did what they needed to do,
I’m sure all the football fans, their viewer, could care less, as long as they can watch the game.
Hank Williams Jr. revealing himself to be a tea-bagger bigot is hardly shocking, but I just don’t get how Obama can be both Stalin and Hitler at the same time in their warped, country-fried minds. Bagger incoherence in the face of a black man as president is truly epic.
…said the Demonrat whackjob.
You sound like a White liberal who lives in a gated neighborhood and sends his/her kids to a private school to protect them from the fatherless welfare thugs. Kinda like the black man who is our president does. har!
To be honest, I was getting tired of his song on MNF, anyway. I’m sure they could find something just as good or better. His song was a bit, too much, “Country”, and NFL should really be thinking more Global, today. Also, his comments make him sound like a stereotypical, “Redneck”. I guess those royalty checks are about to end, and he can write a song about how he should have shut his mouth.
I don’t think he was calling Obama “Hitler” the way Glenn Beck does it, but he’s revealing a more nuanced problem – he can’t understand how people with opposing political views can play golf together. That’s fucking sad.
Good point.
Maybe we can see a documentary abaout the whole situation, it can be called “Shut up and sing”…
