David Seltzer, who recently wrote HBO’s movie Cinema Verite, is back in business with the pay cable network, this time on the series side. HBO has bought an hourlong project from him and HBO Sports commentator Jim Lampley. The untitled drama is about a family dealing with co-dependence and addiction. Seltzer will write and executive produce with Lampley, whose company Atticus has a deal with HBO, as well as Lampley’s manager Michael Price. In addition to the family drama, which was packaged by ICM, Lampley and Price are executive producing HBO’s upcoming unscripted series On Freddie Roach with Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey.

Sounds more like a Showtime drama than an HBO series, but we’ll see…
Can you elaborate? What does that mean to you?
Showtime dramas, especially their most recent ones, tend to be quirky dramedies centered on an off-beat main character struggling with mental illness or addiction: Tara has multiple personalities, Jackie is addicted to pain killers, Carrie from Homeland has some kind of psychosis, Dexter is a psychopath, William H. Macy’s character from Shameless is an alcoholic, the main character from Californication has sex addiction, and Cathie from The Big C has become a bit unhinged after learning she has terminal cancer. Whereas HBO traditionally has more variety in its programming or tries new things rather than sticking to the same formula.
Particularly if they try to make this show a dramedy, this will fit more with Showtime than HBO. That’s why I say “we’ll see.”
Wow. You nailed that answer, Sareeta, and help me realize why I canceled Showtime last year. They need to freshen up.
Maybe they can call this Shameless Weeds?
David Seltzer is awesome. Love that guy!
“family dealing with co-dependence and addiction”
Sounds a lot like The Wonderful Malady’s , the pilot SMG did for HBO in 2009 , though that was going for a comedy angle as well .
A show about addiction. Yawn. Most boring and overdone subject ever. I always know when a show is on it’s last legs. That’s when one of the characters suddenly has a drug or alcohol problem or starts going to a 12 step program.
I think it would be more fun for Lampley do produce a show about a psuedo-intellectual wife beater who isn’t very good at his day job. That’s something Jimbo should know a lot about.
Lamply is an over the hill sports announcer. Didn’t know he was even around??Does anyone even remember him??? what does he even know about producing television? And this idea…been done and done and done. OK…this has to be some heavy HBO politics because it sure isn’t about talent. This guy doesn’;t have it.
Lampley Rocks!!
