Three weeks into Boardwalk Empire‘s second season, the HBO Prohibition-era drama has been picked up for a third one. This marks another early renewal for the Terence Winter/Martin Scorsese series, which received its second-season order immediately after the series premiere last fall. “Following a triumphant first season, I was eager to see what Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their stellar team had in store, and they continue to surpass our highest expectations,” HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo said.Created by Winter, Boardwalk Empire is set in the 1920s in the early days of Prohibition, and chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi), the undisputed leader of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster. While not the runaway hit that HBO’s vampire drama True Blood is, Boardwalk has been steady in the ratings, most recently drawing 2.9 million for its original airing on Sunday. With multiple play/DVR viewing included, Boardwalk ranks among HBO’s most popular offerings with an average gross audience of 10.7 million. While it was surprisingly snubbed in most top categories at the Emmys last month, Boardwalk won best directing for a drama series for the Scorsese-helmed pilot and 8 Emmys overall. It also won best drama series and best lead actor (Buscemi) at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards. Season 2 was executive produced by Winter, Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg. The series joins recently renewed True Blood, Game of Thrones and Treme and the upcoming Luck, Veep, Girls, Ricky Gervais’ Life’s Too Short and Aaron Sorkin’s as-yet untitled news network drama. Still in limbo is the future of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which hinges on creator/star Larry David’s committing to another season.

One of he best shows on tv.
I just wish this was must-see TV. Congrats to everyone involved, but miss an episode, and you don’t miss much.
To the person saying missing an episode you won’t miss much wow suprising for someone who watches must see tv. Coming from a true fan of Boardwalk you just need to shut the hole in your face. Not our fault your a cheap ass who loves daytime soaps like one life to live…
I agree. HBO is just saving face with this renewal. The show is flat this season. It has no dramatic tension at all.
HBO clearly ignored the pans of Boardwalk Empire season two from NY Magazine, AOL, Salon and so many others.
Guess Mark Wahlberg is now running HBO. Does this mean Entourage the movie is on a fast track?
What about “How to Make it in America?” The bulk of the content of the Wahlberg/HBO shows are all about the struggles of being a single white male in America.
The only involvement Wahlberg has in this show is cashing his check.
Pretending he actually ‘produces’ is an insult to everyone involved.
And I guess YOU missed the raves from the Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Alan Sepinwall, and a dozen others.
Alan Sepinwall? Who the heck is that? Is he on the HBO pay roll?
Thumbs UP. Congrats.
Congratulations to Steve Levinson. Fabulous guy, brilliant producer and a wonderful manager. Way to go Steve.
I’m a fan and I’ll keep watching, but seriously this season has been a snoozer so far. Hope they crank up the plot developments.
F.R. – It doesn’t matter what they say about it. The only thing that matters to HBO is, are people subscribing because this show exists? If the answer is yes, and if the number is high enough, then the show lives, if not, it dies. Clearly, the answer is yes, and the number is high enough.
I’ve wanted to get my spending down for a while but Boardwalk Empire, now along with Game of Thrones, is why I keep HBO. I’m loving this new season.
It’s amazing I no not 1 person that watches this show, Or remotely even talk about it… it’s gotta be the only show that I know that has been renewed without any kind of push
Hang out with a better class of people, dac.
@Justin: My sentiments exactly.
I suppose you never miss an episode of some of the drivel on network tv though. This show is for adults who like good drama mixed with a little “history”. I’m not saying the things these criminal types do are biographical, but it’s fun to imagine they did. I love the interpretation of Al Capone (a dad, a son, a husband), not as just a hoodlum from Chicago. I don’t miss a Sunday, sometimes I even watch it again later in the week.
HBO thinks the awards are gonna start pouring in for Boardwalk but they’re sadly mistaken. The current team needs to get out of Terry’s way and let him just tell the story. Too much navel gazing in HBO series these days.
What’s your definition of “pour?” The awards have already come — numerous Golden Globes and Emmys.
Why wouldn’t they come? This is the best show on television right now.
Good news. While not quite the Sopranos, BE does bring much of the same slow pacing and story-telling. Some weeks it seems like nothing happens (where’s the “whack of the week?”). But other weeks, there are numerous payoffs.
HBO knows the value of three-dimensional character development, as well as involved season-long story arcs. Nothing wrong with short attention spans, but if you really want to commit to a good involved story, then dramas like BE are for you.
Good to know viewers will have at least 3 seasons total to get to know these characters.
Great news! HBO dramas are hit-and-miss but BE is well written, features great acting (except for Michael Pitt, who seems a bit out of his league), and does a good job with scenery and setting. Exploring the roots of 20th century organized crime has proven to be an engaging enterprise.
Boardwalk Empire is the ONLY reason I keep HBO. If it gets canceled, I ditch HBO.
Good that those involved will remain gainfully employed, but if this show were on network TV it never would have made it to a third season, let alone a third episode.
It’s painfully boring, and like another poster said, no one is talking about this show. It is not buzzworthy. No one stands around at the water cooler asking their co-workers “did you see Boardwalk Empire last night?”
Thank you for your irrefutable insight about what is being discussed around every water cooler in the United States.
Ha, Bernstein. The egotists who think that they speak for a 300 million plus nation are pathetic.
I talk about the episodes with my co-workers every other week. Got to love the ignorants and the short-attention span imbeciles like you.
I think that there are going to be 5 total seasons of BE.
Myself and my wife love this show. We look forward to Sunday nights and new episodes. I’m paying full price for HBO, just for this show. Well, all the cool movies too
This has some of the best writing on television, if not the best.
For those saying it is boring, go back to checking your blackberry, iphone, facebook, twitter, and jersey shore recaps. Great serial storytelling takes time and doesn’t take shortcuts.
I’d rate Boardwalk number 3 all-time on HBO, with Sopronos at number 2 and, Deadwood at number 1. But that’s just me.
its a good series. who thinks its boring should go see some action movie cause its drama series and drama is about life, characters etc. not action.
Boardwalk Empire has adults doing adult things. It has (Oh My) plot development. It has great acting. It is NOT about VAMPIRES that look like HOLLYWOOD CUTIES, male and female. Consequently, grown ups watch it. Thank you HBO for showing something for those of us over 35 who remember what good drama was like (Playhouse 90, Studio One, Hallmark Hall of Fame)
Apperantly the people on this thread who hate Boardwalk Empire don’t like story telling and character development. I’m glad this show dosent cater to morons who only like seeing blood and brains everywhere.
This show is wonderfully written, directed, and acted. I can never wait till Sundays to watch the next episode.
Deadwood number one? And over The Wire?
boardwalk empire is at its best , I can’t wait to see what’s next, It;s only going to get better…
BE has to be one of the best new HBO shows. HBO has done it again! Deadwood, Rome, Sapronos, ext… Thrones are the only reason I keep HBO. Keep up the good work!
BE is so uncompelling I stopped watching right at the second to last episode and cancelled HBO. That’s right, this show wasn’t even worth finding out what happened to any of the characters in the big finale.
Acting is very uneven, with Michael Pitt clearly not ready to be an actor. The storylines are all over the place, lots of anachronistic behavior and story focus (MUCH political correctness concerning negroes, done simply to flatter liberals in the audience), sordid elements that don’t work (like the ugh lesbianism), and all the worst soap opera from the Sopranos. Combine that with the fact that Buscemi is completely miscast as a towering Irishman!!! lol not
Everything you listed is ridiculous. What the fuck is catering to liberals? The story lines are not confusing at all. And the most absurd claim of all, Steve Buscemi miscast? Ridiculous. He is doing an amazing job.
The writing, acting, casting, special effects, and costumes are all top notch.
You’re wrong. Buscemi is a terrific character actor. He’s no romantic lead, with his bug eyes, nasal voice, slight, stooped frame, greasy hair and raggedy yellow teeth. He’s just not right for this part. He’s not charming, he’s wonderfully creepy.
Thanks HBO for giving real Americans a taste of what it was like back in the 1920′s. Being an African American I thank you for a guy like Chalkie White-so Gangsta & “Nucky” is all about buisness, that’s how you make it in America.
Thanks again HBO
