EXCLUSIVE: HBO has made a deal to develop the Oscar-nominated comedy The Kids Are All Right as an hour-long series. Lisa Cholodenko, who co-wrote and directed the Focus Features release, will write the pilot script. I’m told that it will continue the adventures of the five main characters. They were the same-sex partners (played in the film by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore), their son and daughter (played by Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska) and the biological father of the kids/sperm donor who surfaces and tears the family apart (played by Mark Ruffalo in the film). Deals are still being worked out, but Cholodenko will be exec producer alongside the film’s original producers, Antidote Films’ Jeffrey Levy-Hinte, Gilbert Films’ Gary Gilbert and Maven Pictures’ Celine Rattray. Cholodenko is repped by Cinetic.

I think this is a fabulous idea. I hope the casting rivals the film. Count me in!
I MUST AGREE WITH ROBYN. WE BOTH KNOW THAT IT WON’T BE THE SAME ACTOR BUT I AM HOPPING THE WRITING AND ACTING WILL RIVAL THE FILM. IT WILL BE INTERESTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CHARACTER BACKGROUND. IT WOULD BE INTERESTED TO LEARN HOW THE TWO MOTHER MEET. IT WOULD BE INTERESTED TO LEARN ABOUT THE FATHER BACKGROUND. GOOD LUCK TO THE SERIES. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Forget “casting that rivals the film.” The original players should all return, even if it’s only a 6 or 8 hour miniseries! Hell, Julianne Moore almost did Prime Suspect…
I’m not sold on movies as backdoor TV pilots yet. Although Clueless was awesome, so maybe this’ll be okay…
M.A.S.H. worked out pretty well too.
Never heard of it. Is that the game you play with paper where you tell someone’s fortune? Mansion Apartment Shack House?
Lets not forget “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” either…
For me, there have been some really good film to TV adaptations.
Highlander The Series
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
La Femme Nikita
Nikita
Stargate SG-1
The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Friday Night Lights
Parenthood
Teen Wolf
What about Mr. Belvedere??? Belvedere never gets any respect!
WHY? That movie was disgusting! I watched it thinking it was going to be a lighthearted drama and all it was was nasty! Those lesbian sex scenes while watching porno? Gross.
So you watched a movie about a lesbian couple thinking they would never touch each other? Maybe you should have realized you were homophobic before pressing play.
Maybe the previews had me thinking it was a family film, a “modern family!” The film would have been just fine without the ridiculous and raunchy sex scenes! That’s the problem with Hollywood always trying to push the envelope in unneeded ways. Talk about lame.
Any chance of snagging the original cast? THAT would be pretty awesome.
I doubt HBO has the money to get all the actors for at least 6 times the work involved in the film, especially since Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson are becoming movers and shakers themselves.
HBO has been known to get well-known actors and actresses on their TV series, miniseries, and movies, not to mention Mia Wasikowska did a season on HBO’s In Treatment and Julianne Moore is going to play Sarah Palin in an HBO movie.
I don’t know if I’m interested in seeing this story go forward, especially if they have to recast the parts. While I thought the ending of the film was a bit mean spirited, it still felt real. Also, I was hoping Cholodenko was working on an original concept for an HBO series. That would be cool.
The film was a critical success but HBO may be over-estimating the demand for an hour-long scripted drama series based on this. Casting will be key, but the real draw will be whether the producers can create ongoing characters and story arcs that viewers can care about.
Done poorly, this could end up a lesbian-couple version of ABC’s Brothers & Sisters.
And the criticism begins in 3…2…1….
hmm..this could probably work..
This will be great… So long as they take the time to cast the right people…
Fierce. Original cast would be awesome. If not–I’m available.
Is be all in if they made a tv series out of the film “The Kids Are Alright”, but only if the show is about the REAL movie, the one with The Who, a duh! Not this POS pseudo lesbo crapola! And what ugly lezzies, too! Just make it about The Who’s rise to prominance and greatness-THAT will be worth it!
It will work with the right cast. All kinds of possibilities in every direction. It can be written out for ten years+. Hire me, Lisa?
Your comment is narrow minded.
I bet you have sex fully clothed.
Wouldn’t want to be a fly on that wall.
The film itself felt very TV season crunched into 2 hrs. I easily saw it being on Showtime, but this is even better.
@brutony: I’ve met Roger Daltry–and you ain’t no Daltry. He’s living in THIS century.
It will be ok if they don’t turn it into a ‘let’s get young guys to watch it’ pseudo-lesbo storyline with no plot. It could be really great, but we’ll see….
This AND The Corrections? Its hard to imagine either working as a series, but nice that HBO is so ambitious as to try and make them work. If any network can do it…
I thought the movie would end by the daughter getting a text from her brother saying, “They are holding hands.”
I await the series, but think the affair is the least interesting part and unnecessary.
