Opening a new night of original programming is not easy, so expectations for HBO’s new Monday 9 PM comedy block — which faces CBS’ comedies, ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, Fox’s House and ESPN’s Monday Night Football — were modest. Even by that standard, the well-received new Mike White/Laura Dern comedy Enlightened opened low with 210,000 viewers at 9:30 PM. It slipped a little from its lead-in, the third-season premiere of Bored To Death, which drew 240,000 viewers. Quirky noir comedy Bored To Death was down dramatically from its season premiere last fall, which averaged 1.05 million viewers, but back then, the show aired on Sundays following Boardwalk Empire, which drew 3.33 million viewers on the night of the Bored debut. This time around, it is dark comedy Hung that follows Boardwalk Empire and, like Bored to Death last year, it opened with 1.1 million viewers earlier this month. (Boardwalk Empire logged 2.6 million that night) Sophomore comedy How To Make It To America dropped further to 467,000 viewers at 10:30 PM. While soft, the numbers for Bored and Enlightened were only slightly down from the average for another half-hour series that aired outside HBO’s signature Sunday night, drama In Treatment.

How To Make It To America should not have renewed for a 2nd season.
actually, it’s a good show
Says who? There is not a single critic or fan who likes the show. It is terrible, and everyone acknowledges it as such.
Your actors talk about how much it sucks to fans, and in interviews.
have you watched it this season? i didn’t love it, but i’m getting sucked in.
Enlightened is hilarious and moving. Mike White did a great job directing. Laura Dern was incredible. The ending was really beautiful.
Love this show.
Can anyone explain why they would bring back Bored to Death, Hung, and How to Make it in America while at the same time bringing back Boardwalk and trying to launch a new series? All this did was remind me I watch way too many TV shows and only have time for maybe two of these.
I absolutely LOVE Bored to Death. The writing and the casting are the best on HBO. THE BEST!
Enlightened was boring. Bored to Death was great. I just hope Bored to Death can survive this season. The opener was the best yet.
The reason why Enlightened bombed is because HBO barley marketed it. I had no idea it was premiered till today! So sexist of HBO not to market this dramedy that stars a womyn. Hopefully they’ll let this catch on and not let it go the way on the extremely underrated The Comeback.
I agree with you. I didn’t even know it was on. I saw subway ads for it but I thought it was a movie. When I went to find it to DVR it, they don’t have it on again. Looks like once a week. So why even bother.
She needs to be chased by a Velociraptor again, then i would watch.
HBO is just about big names and big budgets. Thankfully there are other places to find great shows these days.
Game of Thrones was one of the best new shows in a long time and Boardwalk Empire this season has gotten off to a great start. I don’t care what the budgets and names are, if the shows deliver on story and character development, which these two definitely do, I’ll keep paying for my HBO.
Why was my comment deleted?
Anyway: Too bad for the disappointing results of Bored to Death. I’ve come to really love that show. Hopefully HBO will be considerate that it’s a really good comedy series and renew it for a fourth round.
Sorry to say, it’s a soft show. Even Laura Dern, who I love, is kinda boring in this.
HBO “comedies” are pretty boring.
Yes! Many of the “comedies” there are so squishy they’re just dull, I agree with Brick too much to type…
Enlightened was delightful.
That’s because HBO sucks now.
The concept (and the very title) sound preachy. It stars an actress I once liked but who has alienated a lot of her fans thanks to some of the idiotic comments she’s made over the past few years (I don’t know what universe she lives in). The billboards for this were hideous (gee, let’s promote a comedy by having an extreme close up of a pissed-off crying woman). No surprise it tanked.
What comments?
I love this show. The crying poster was hysterical. Mike White is a very talented guy.
thought it was great, give it a chance.
that’s why they have DVR’s and On-Demand. too many things on at one time.
Love Enlightened and Bored to Death. If you watch the HBO trailer for their TV season it’s all MEN and then a pop of Anna Paquin and Laura Dern. Enlightened was barely marketed. They have a publicity machine over there to push this stuff if they want. Enlightened has been done for a long time. Clearly they are unsure about it.
There is also not a single series show on HBO created by a woman. Hung is created by a male/female writing team. Every other show is created by a man.
So HBO has next to no women starring on it’s network (Not to mention any women of color) or women creating shows and very few women on writing/producing staffs. True Blood to it’s bloody and unwatchable credit has a few.
The message is pretty clear. At least Sheila Nevins in documentaries goes for a well rounded audience and creates viewing with some soul.
actually Hung has several women and people of color –about half it seems to me–on its writing staff.
thought Enlightened was great. honest and not premised on any gimmicks. it’s the first show in a while (since 6 Ft Under?) that both my wife and I have been excited about.
that said, am curious to see how they will drive the story over the length of the season. enjoyed Luke Wilson in it too.
Enlightened is a show about the co-worker who one day comes to work and shoots everyone. Who wants to watch that?
How is Enlightened not The Big C?
AFTER WATCHING HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA I CANCELED HBO. YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME WITH THAT CRAP.
Laura Dern is not a draw, and those miserable ads with her mascara running down her face certainly doesn’t make anyone want to tune in. And those ads were for a comedy? Insane.
HBO series division clearly doesn’t want a female audience watching their shows or are they inclined to employ females in significant positions. Sue Naegle and Michael Lombardo have made some fairly discriminatory choices in all their development and production. There are fewer female speaking characters on HBO shows than men not to mention fewer women behind the camera writing, directing and producing. There are fewer women employed in series development at HBO now as well too.
These are just the facts.
Broadcast networks have better half hour shows than HBO and Showtime has 2 good hour shows. HBO just has Boardwalk Empire
Broadcast networks have better half hour shows than HBO and Showtime has 2 good hour shows. HBO just has Boardwalk Empire–?!
Right. Go back to your broadcast sitcoms. Leave Bored to Death and Enlightened to the quarter million people who don’t want to watch Tim Allen play a lovable conservative.
That’s too bad. Enlightened was fantastic and incredibly moving at the end. Dern was brilliant.
Ugh, HBO is losing its spark. Everything on air and coming up is a big mash of entitlement. You want to really show someone STRUGGLING and having a breakdown? Show someone who doesn’t have money to go on a “retreat” to learn she must change her outlook. Boring. Eat Pray Love the HBO show. Ick.
