EXCLUSIVE: In what could be one of the last big bidding wars this pitch season, I hear that 3 networks — ABC, NBC and CBS — are after a multi-camera comedy from Better With You creator/executive producer Shana Goldberg-Meehan, which is toplined by the series’ star JoAnna Garcia. The project, about a woman (Garcia) who moves in with her husband’s family, was formally pitched to the networks today, landing offers right away, but there had been buzz about it for the past couple of weeks. Warner Bros. TV, where Goldberg-Meehan has been based since her days on Friends, is producing. Goldberg-Meehan has history at both ABC and NBC. Her family comedy Better With You starring Garcia and Jennifer Finnigan had a seasonlong run on ABC, where Goldberg-Meehan also has done a couple of pilots. And at NBC, she spent 7 seasons on Friends, rising to executive producer/co-showrunner, and co-created spinoff Joey. The strong interest in the project underscores the huge popularity of the comedy genre this development season, which has led to bidding wars over several half-hour pitches.

Love it! Shana Goldberg-Meehan is one of the hardest working, most genuinely caring and brilliant writers in multi camera television. So happy to see her and Joanna bouncing back without a scratch after BWY was so badly handled by ABC. Needless to say, I hope she goes elsewhere with her new project. Way to go Shanes!

Could not agree more. The fact that someone is nice, or hard working, or caring is really irrelevant. I mean, it makes a good person. But it doesn’t make a good writer. BTW was awful.

Shana is a great writer. The care she puts in to her shows and staff is just the icing. Did you happen to catch ANY of the countless episodes of Friends she personally wrote? So quickly we forget in Hollywood. I guess great TV just writes and runs itself.
“Better With You” developed into a pretty good show by the end of its run – not great, but a good mid-tier sitcom (about on par with “Cougar Town”). I don’t know how much of that was due to Goldberg-Meehan and how much was due to Greg Malins’ involvement, though.

I will be happy as long as it doesn’t go to NBC!! I feel they are having a rough time with comedies (well they’re having trouble with every genre) and I think that it will have a better shot at succeeding at CBS or ABC, specifically CBS since their multi-camera comedies are booming and ABC seems to be booming with single cams, but nonetheless this NEEDS to be on the fall schedule! it will be a hit. This has got be Joanna’s hit this time!
This is such great news. Shana is a class act. She’s an amazing writer and a kick ass showrunner. I worked with her very early in my career and learned a ton from her.
