An Iranian actress has been sentenced to 90 lashes and a year in prison for appearing in an Australian film showing her not wearing a headscarf. Marziah Vafamehr, star of 2009 film My Tehran For Sale, was imprisoned in July. Her sentence has been revealed by Iranian opposition website Kalameh.com. Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said the Australian government was “deeply concerned” about Vafamehr’s arrest. Cyan Films, the South Australia-based production company which made the award-winning film, said it was “deeply shocked and appalled” by her sentence. Ironically, My Tehran For Sale follows an actress who finds herself banned from working on stage by the Iranian authorities. The film shows Iranian young people going to underground raves, smoking hashish and having sex before marriage – behaving, in short, like most young people around the world do. The producers have said the film was never intended for distribution within Iran, and its dissemination on the black market in Tehran has been totally outside their control. “We continue to offer our support to Marzieh and her family by respecting their wishes to let the case and the appeal follow the proper legal channels,” producers Kate Croser and Julie Ryan said in a statement. There is confusion as to what Vafamehr has been arrested for: she appears to have been arrested on grounds that My Tehran For Sale was shot in the Iranian capital without proper shooting permits. Both Cyan Films and Vafamehr’s husband, Iranian filmmaker Nasser Taghvai, deny this. Vafahmehr’s sentence comes the day after Islamist protestors in Tunisia tried to set fire to a TV station that screened Oscar-nominated film Persepolis: That film follows a young girl as she comes of age against the backdrop of the Iranian revolution. According to Kalameh.com, Vafamehr’s lawyer has appealed the sentence. Here is the trailer:

That’s a fantastic precedent… can we do that to Brett Ratner?
Are you really using this tragedy to display your deficiencies as a humorist?
Thank you J.K. this is horrifying and nothing to make a joke about.
Not cool, dude.
TOTALLY NUTS!
Here’s the important thing – we can’t rush to judge their culture or society – that would be wrong. Women are treated like dogs, Jew and Christians and persecuted simply for going to houses of worship, homosexuals are murdered — but we are close-minded Westerners and evil Americans for judging them … they are just different, that’s all – it’s our fault for being so critical.
My thoughts exactly. They are animals. Totally barbaric culture. Idgaf if that offends any sensitive ears.
Disgusting! I hope she is released, but it wont happen, god!
And we have the nerve to complain about things (Freedoms, etc.) in OUR country? Shame on us all!
it’s the complaining and that right to complain that actually makes it way better over here. so I say, keep complaining about things, cuz if we ever stop, then we’re in trouble
goodness, is it 2011 or 1850? that these places exist today is just beyond comprehension. this poor actress is a brave lady and needs to be celebrated. The subjugation of women on this planet should be at the forefront of any conversation regarding race or protestation of piety. Easily, the most overlooked crime of our day
In case anyone isn’t paying attention, this is what happens in society when a single religion determines public policy. How far is this result form outlawing two consenting adults who happen to be the same sex from marrying simply because one group’s book of rules says it’s icky? We can’t condemn Iran and allow our own laws to be shaped by the words in the Bible over the words in the Constitution. Want to fight against this kind of thing? Start at home — protect a woman’s right to choose, marriage equality, and the full separation of church and state regardless of your faith, and then we’ll be better than Iran. Right now, we’re getting closer and closer to their ways, not the other way around.
Really!?! I mean what the hell century are we living in!?! A year in prison?! 90 lashes!?! For what!?! For having the nerve to display her beautiful face & not wearing a stupid scarf! I mean COME ON PEOPLE!! It’s unfathomable places exist where this type of garbage is not only accepted, but also, cloaked in a veil of “traditions” & “religious beliefs”. How the f*#k do they get away with treating women this way!?! When I hear about something like this-I truly feel embarrassed having myself labeled as a member of the “human” race, because, treating someone like this is wrong & barbaric!! Anyone who has a heart & a soul knows this is wrong. Women should be treated with respect, love,&kindness!! I am very saddened today because as we all know-this type of debasing of women exists in too many cultures & in too many places. Why doesn’t someone give a few lashes to the men in these countries & see how they like it!?! I truly pray for all of our women on this earth!! Be safe & DON’T EVER!! get involved with a man who doesn’t respect your needs as a human being! Thank you.
