That’s the explosive claim that the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the American Federation of Musicians are making today based on the satellite radio company’s efforts to cut deals with independent record labels giving them 100% of the royalty payments. Such an arrangement would break with the traditional practice of funneling 45% of royalties to SoundExchange — a clearinghouse authorized by Congress to handle artists’ payments – with 5% going to the unions (typically to pay session musicians), and the remaining half going to record labels. “This move is blatantly anti-artist and anti-musician,” says AFTRA National Executive Director Kim Roberts Hedgpeth. “The statutory license established by Congress and the system administered by SoundExchange ensures transparency, efficiency, accountability — and most important — direct, non-recoupable payment to artists of their fair share of royalties for SiriusXM’s use of their music.” SiriusXM didn’t immediately respond to a request to provide its views in the dispute.

AFTRA stole SAG actors’ sources of income so now their constituents are having their income stolen. That’s Karma. It doesn’t take long to work. Good for Sirius. Rob a thief you aren’t liable, is an ancient legal principal. Fuck AFTRA its leadership and membership.
Record companies should be paying SiriusXM, not the other way around. SiriusXM has channels of almost every type of music and exposes songs and artist to about 20million subscribers. It’s about time they embrace and thank Sirius for all they’ve done.
Sirius is overrated. Don’t know how they are still in business and now they want to cheat the artist. The hell with this company. It should just shut down and be lucky it had a good run. LOL, Paying for radio….what idiot out there is hip to that. LOSERS!
Mason Richards’ comment that Sirius is overrated, blah, blah, blah, evinces the fact that his ability to comment on matters of art and entertainment is itself overrated. W/out Sirius, we would have the droning of 24 minutes/hour of treble, nasal, accent ridden buffoonery instead of the enchantment of the sounds and euphony Sirius provides all who listen to it. Mason Richards – go eff yoursefl.
Like him or not, it’s clear Sirius ripped off Howard Stern, who pretty much saved that company from the grip of death.
Screwing other artists doesn’t seem like that much of a stretch for Sirius.
Saved Sirius…and RUINED XM.
