Danish film director Lars von Trier is always self-promoting — but he’s in big trouble now. He was visited by police today at his Denmark home and quizzed about possibly breaking French law which forbids justifying war crimes. It’s because Von Trier caused a storm of controversy during this year’s Cannes Film Festival when he said he had some sympathy for Hitler and Nazis dring a rambling monologue at a press conference. Although he later claimed he was trying to attract attention to his movie by making a joke, the festival banned him, he apologized, and later he rescinded the apology. In the end, European distributors ditched his latest film Melancholia which had its world premiere at Cannes before the ruckus. Now von trier is pledging to keep his mouth shut. Yeah, sure. “He’s a human being and a man with a family, and he wants to avoid further visits from anybody. He’s entirely fed up,” his spokesman tells me. Here is von Trier’s own statement:
Today at 2 pm I was questioned by the Police of North Zealand in connection with charges made by the prosecution of Grasse in France from August 2011 regarding a possible violation of prohibition in French law against justification of war crimes. The investigation covers comments made during the press conference in Cannes in May 2011. Due to these serious accusations I have realized that I do not possess the skills to express myself unequivocally and I have therefore decided from this day forth to refrain from all public statements and interviews.

“I have therefore decided from this day forth to refrain from all public statements and interviews.”
Wow! Can we send the French police after Kim Kardashian and all the other reality stars now?
He coulda’ just said “forthwith” – no? Does this mean we won’t have von Trier to kick around anymore? Further inquiry shall proceed forthwith. May I hitch a ride back to Auckland?
Promises, promises Lars…
I give him a month, tops.
Obviously, von Trier overestimated the intelligence of the audience and completely underestimated the media’s willingness to create a scandal whenever possible and (purposely?) misunderstand what he wanted to say. In part, this thing was as lost in translation as was the intended humor.
It seems that with some subjects, an artist ought NOT to share his thoughts. To view Hitler as a character and to do what any writer is supposed to do – understand the character and love him – is a normal thing when it comes to work, but please don’t talk to supposed experts about this aspect and assume they will try to follow your thoughts. They aren’t artists and some of them are vicious. Scandals sell copy. Explaining your process and logic isn’t entertaining enough. Political views? Big no-no.
And please don’t talk about your discovery, shocked as you may be, that your parents weren’t Jewish, but rather German and possibly even Nazis. Nobody wants to think about what that would do to a person. BTW: Did this bit inform the bit on HOUSE? Makes it even funnier. To some. Not the ones suffering from Soundbytitis.
Good for you to give the media the finger, as they deserve it. Somehow I’m reminded on that tiny little Hitler statue and the outrage it created.
I hope this frustration and upset will result in an engaging script. Something way more interesting than watching a depressed girl getting married to Alexander Skarsgard, of all people…
“Melancholia” is a fantastic movie. Once again, one has to separate the masterpiece from the author, even when said author is being a childish provocateur.
OH WHAT A LOAD OF NONSENSE!
As if Lars is now an accomplice in the Holocaust and a supporter of Nazism!
What a load of absolute drivel and nonsense.
THEY CAME TO HIS DOOR? Are you serious? The door of a world renowned filmmaker for having made such a, granted ridiculous, but really unharmful statement.
Why don’t you go and question rapists and pedophiles.
I am disguested
No wonder the European economy is in shambles. Their police are more interested in prosecuting people for “justifying war crimes” than real crimes?
They’re almost as stupid as American police. They need to remember what real criminal acts are.
I know from previous comments Lars isn’t exactly fond of the United States, but perhaps he should consider living in a nation with a First Amendment and a strong tradition of freedom of speech.
Have you seen how ignorant people are in the United States? Believe me, freedom of speech will be outlawed or modified in this country very soon. There are already loopholes that the cops use against suspects. Believe me, if put to a vote, Americans would do away with freedom of speech. Dress it up a certain way, using terrorism or drugs, and you’ll get it passed. They are that dumb.
>United States
>freedom of speech
nice joke, sir
This guy is clearly a turd, but if “justifying war crimes” gets you a visit from the police, I hope THE WORLD locks its doors….Darfur anyone?
Thought police: 1
You’re free future: 0
I’m Jewish, and Lars didn’t hurt my feelings. Watch the video with an open mind, and it’s obvious: the guy was trying to be funny, got tripped up, and said something insanely stupid. His simple apology was enough for me. We all say stupid things we don’t mean sometimes.
The Holocaust is no joke. Neither is AIDS, cancer, rape, slavery, terrorism, etc, etc. But we still joke about them from time to time, if only to lighten the proverbial mood. Just ask the geniuses behind South Park.
Exaggerated outrage is always suspect. Case in point: the Western European attitude toward the Holocaust. Show me a country that fed its Jews to the Nazis, and I’ll show you a country that has no sense of humor about it today.
Von Trier is no Nazi , just an outspoken Movie Maker . He has just put his foot in his mouth , here !
